Uppsala, Henrici Curionis, (1662). 8:o. (12),+ 811,+ (11),+ 50 s. Enstaka fläckar samt två små hål i marginalen. Samtida pergamentband.

Selden,John (1584-1654)
Johann. Brendel 3rd edition, Leipzig, 1662. Copperplate engraved extra titlepage with 6 scenes of worship of Idols & miracles etc signed IBS. Small octavo bound in suede sheepskin (front cover detached/spine damaged but lower cover soundly attached). Engraved titlepage + printed titlepage +[21p dedication & prefaces] +[22-36pp contents] +373pp +[51p index]. Ownership inscription dated 1856 on inside of front board. Minor worming to later part of index and normal expected edge browning and a few spots but the paper is supple and readable. Text in Latin with substantial portions in Greek and some Hebrew. *Although Selden was primarily a lawyer and known best for his legal titles he was also a serious antiquary. This work deals with study of Syrian mythology and comparison with a study of the antiquity of the Hebrew Old Testament and led to his reputation as an oriental scholar. His large collection of oriental books and manuscripts are at the Bodleian Library at Oxford. There seem to be two versions of this 3rd edition of 1662 by Brendel one of 28 preliminaries +331pp and ours [36] +373pp +[51p index] First written when Selden was in his early 20's it was not published until 1617 as is explained in the Preface to the first edition which is reprinted in this edition after a later Preface. 1 volume. HARVEY, WILLIAM (1578-1657)
Amsterdam: J. Ravesteyn, 1662. Hardcover. Very Good. Engraved emblematic Titlepage. Duodecimo original leather 4 raised bands, spine compartments gilt & gilt spine title (worn with lower half of top hinge split/hinges rubbed & some ends of hinge splits/tips worn/scuffed but quite sound & firm). Engraved titlepage +[26] +388pp +[3]pp index. Small archival repair to margin of TP (no involvement of print), ownership stamp (faint & hard to read) on pastedown and nice ownership inscription of an Avignon medical doctor dated 1676 on flyleaf. *Harvey's fundamental work on embryology and endocrinology which, if he had not discovered the circulation of the blood would alone have ensured his fame. All earlier theories of reproduction were based on Aristotelian and Galenic medicinal teaching but Harvey's researches on chicken and deer embryos proved to his satisfaction that semen fertilized the ovum and that spontaneous generation was without foundation. He also explained growth and differentiation of organs and opposed the doctrine of pre-formation. "The most important book on the subject to appear during the 17th century" (Garrison-Morton. Cf. Krivatsy 7661, Wellcome IV,98).

BLAEU, Jan (1596-1673)
Amsterdam: Jan Blaeu, [1662]. Copper-engraved map, with original colour. Latin text on verso. Skillful marginal repair to center fold. 19 1/2 x 24 inches. An aesthetic chord of triumph and the culmination of Dutch cartography. This is the new world map prepared by Blaeu for the eleven volume Atlas Maior of 1662. Unlike its predecessor with its marginal city views and native peoples, this is a double hemispheric map with the classical gods that personify each planet and Apollo, the Sun. Each planetary deity is portrayed with his astrological attributes: Mercury with flying cap and caduceus; Venus with cupid at her side; Mars armed for battle; Jupiter with thunderbolts; and Saturn brooding and holding a flag of a six pointed star (a symbol in Saturn worship). Just below to the left and right are portraits of Claudius Ptolemy and Amerigo Vespucci. At the base are the four allegorical personifications of the seasons, each on a chariot. All of which place Earth in a larger astrological and temporal context, and make the map an exaltation of the Western European achievements. This was the key to Blaeu's Great Atlas: the culminating work of 100 years of Dutch cartography and 300 years of European seafaring. It is surely one of the most beautiful world maps ever made. VILLEDIEU, Madame De. Marie-Catherine Desjardins]
Pris: Chez Clavde Barbin, 1662. 12mo, [xiv], 99, [iii]. Bound in contemporary calf, spine gilt, neatly rebacked with spine laid down. Leaves little toned, but a very good copy. The author's first book. Rare, the OCLC locates just three copies, the UCLA copy in the US and SRT and ZBU in France. Marie-Catherine Desjardines, Madame de Villedieu (1640? -1683) began to write verse after her father ended her affair with a cavalry officer. In 1658 she met Antoine de Boessert, her life time love, and signed a promise to marry him before he left for active duty. Her plays were produced by Moliere and she took on the name Madame de Villedieu. From 1669 she was a prolific author and later, weary of the world, she sought asylum in a convent. She wed a wealthy older man in 1677 and after bearing him a son retired to her country estate. This is a collection of poetry dedicated to the Duchess Mazarin. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

BLAEU, Jan (1596-1673)
[Amsterdam: Blaeu, 1662]. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour and gilt embellishments, mild discolouration at center fold, overall very good condition. 20 1/4 x 26 inches. A handsome example of Blaeu's English county map with exceptional original colour and highlights in gold This beautifully presented county map of Hertfordshire from Johan Blaeu's Atlas Mayor, sino Cosmographia Blavania...is from the only Spanish edition of this great work. The map itself is based on John Speed's map, published in 1612, though without the town plans. Blaeu's map includes the coats of arms of two prominent families. The title cartouche illustrates Hertfordshire's relationship to London in that the county supplied corn and hay to the pleading Londoners pictured on the right hand side of the title. Because of its proximity to London, Hertfordshire had many country houses, reflected in some of the placenames on the map: Waterford Hall, Aldbery Hall, Shingle Hall, and, of course, Waymer Castle.
