Sanson d'Abbeville Nicolas
[Click Below for Full Description]

[32], 148, [4] pp. With an allegorical frontispiece after a design by Evelyn, one full-page engraving in text, and one folding mezzotint by Prince Rupert plus three additional engraved fold-out plates of plant cross-sections from a seperate work. 8vo., 158 x 98 mm, bound in early twentieth-century English speckled calf , gilt, panelled spine, red morocco spine labels, a.e.g. London: Printed by J.C. for G.G. Beedle and J. Collins, 1662. |~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition, the first book to mention the mezzotint process, and containing the first mezzotint published in England. It was through John Evelyn and his Sculptura that the mezzotint process came to be highly regarded as a technique of the graphic arts in England. The mezzotint by Prince Rupert is a detail of his "The Great Executioner," first published in Frankfurt in 1658 after a painting by Ribera. Although Prince Rupert showed Evelyn "his instruments and described his processes, still Evelyn has by no means followed suit, as he very carefully abstains from saying anything which would betray the secret in the smallest degree. As some excuse he says, `I did not think it necessary that an art so curious...was to be prostituted at so cheap a rate as the more naked describing of it here would too soon have exposed to it. … [Click Below for Full Description]

DESCARTES, René (1596-1650)
apud Petrum Leffen & Franciscum Moyardum : 1662 : Leyden : 4to: a-d4 e2 A-P4 Q2, 80 leaves, pp. [36] 121 (i.e. 123, 111/112 repeated) [1]. Woodcut device on title, woodcut initials and headpieces. Many woodcut illustrations and 48 engravings printed in the text. : L'homme is known as the first text-book of physiology, and the first purely mechanistic account of bodily functions. Descartes was one of the first to embrace Harvey's doctrine of the circulation and the book opens with an account of the cardiovascular system, illustrated by a plate of the heart with movable flaps. From a mechanistic survey of general physiology, Descartes moves to the nervous system which he treats in great detail. Particularly important is his discussion of the eye (drawing on Kepler for the optical part) and the physiology of perception. 'The impact of the Cartesian physiological program, once it was publicly known, was enormous. In two ways - philosophically and physiologically - Descartes transformed long-standing beliefs about animals and men. Philosophically, of course, his notions of mind-body dualism and animal automatism had extremely important implications that were not lost on Henry More, Malebranche, Spinoza, and Leibniz, along with many others in the seventeenth century ... But physiologically, too, Descartes' conceptions had an impact that in many ways was even more impressive than the philosophical influence, because it affected the actual course of contemporary science'. (Theodore M. Brown in DSB) The remarkable engravings and woodcuts were commissioned by Schuyl, Descartes havin … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

BELLARMINO, Roberto Francesco Romolo, Saint
Cologne: Johann Busaus, 1662. Very good. 24mo. [16], 224 pp. With an engraved title-page and two engravings in the text (see below). Contemporary, no doubt original, polished vellum, endpapers excised (?), spine lettered in contemporary MS. A pocket-sized Baroque book on death and dying, illustrated with three curious engravings. The allegorical "Vanitas" engraved title-page depicts a well-clad gentleman facing a skeleton with his scythe, below which a cherub sits between a skull and an hourglass. The engraving on *8v presents a "Caritas" scene in which peasants and beggars are given food and drink, while the deceased ascends into heaven accompanied by an angel. The engraving on H8v depicts a dark bedroom, in which a man on his death-bed is adminstered extreme unction by two priests, attended by family members who kneel and pray at the foot of his bed. "With the publication in 1620 of the successful pamphlet 'De arte bene moriendi,' it became clear that its author, Roberto Bellarmino, was a mainstay in ascetical literature. Concerned by the drama of salvation, the Jesuit theologian developed a pedagogy of death in which human life has to be governed in a Christian manner as to have a happy [i.e. peaceful] death. Dominated by the concept of sin, the teaching of Bellarmino identifies the Church as the only guarantee of salvation. In this context, his 'De arte bene moriendi,' […] explains the manner in which to prepare oneself: the individual can not redeem himself only at the end of his earthly existence, or convert for fear of divine justice, but he must be ready to rendezv … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DRAWINGS - CHINESE].
A series of 8 pen and ink drawings (5 coloured, 1 also highlighted in gold), illustrating a Chinese novel, possibly the 14th-century Sanguo yanyi or Romance of the Three Kingdoms. All mounted on European paper (6 on 3 different patterns of decorated paper). The paper of the drawings ranges from 23.5 x 14 cm to 24 x 15 cm. In the backing paper of number 7 one can make out an Amsterdam coat of arms watermark. It is difficult to see clearly but seems to follow the general style of Laurentius 71-95 (1662-1675). They show the following (outdoor and indoor scenes):1) 2 warriors on horseback, one of whom has just beheaded the other and carries his head away (the beheaded warrior has not yet fallen from his horse), while his superior watches on horseback with 2 attendants.2) a man standing with a spear in the prow of a boat, while 2 men and a woman sit at a tea table in the boat, which flies a flag and pennant.3) 5 people on 2 boats, one flying a flag and pennant.4) 4 soldiers bringing a woman to a dignitary at his house.5) a delegation visiting a dignitary.6) 2 men playing go, with 4 attendants and a guard.7) a dignitary at a writing table, with attendants and visitors.8) a seated dignitary with 6 standing figures, 1 with a document at a table. With this series, we include 2 woodblock prints (1 coloured) and 1 watercolour drawing:9) watercolour drawing of irises along a stream with hills in the background (17 x 22.5 cm)10) rectangular woodblock print of a Samauri at a tea ceremony (14 x 10 cm)11) octagonal woodblock print of a monk(?) riding a dragon-like horse, with an attendant o … [Click Below for Full Description]
