BLAEU, Jan
Amsterdam:, 1662. [Island of Madagascar]. Size: 545 x 420 mm. Copperplate engraving, with later hand colouring. In fine condition. Map has been cleaned and there is text showthrough from reverse. A beautifully engraved and detailed map of Madagascar with an elaborate title cartouche showing natives and local fauna. Orientated to the North, no scale bar. A pair of decorative compass roses, some ships at sea and rhumb lines assist in the aesthetic appeal of this map. Apart from the physical geographical elements of the island, there is very little information to be seen apart from the naming of coastal towns and villages all along the eastern coast. From the famous Blaeu 'Atlas Maior'. (Ref Koeman, Atlantis Neerlandici II, 8900:2.)

Record, Robert
Unknown, 1662. Original binding and title pages missing as are the last pages. Book is difficult to date (probably 1662 edition), the latest date within the text, on page 103, is 1630 (a table of gold coins and their worth "this prefent year 1630"). Previous owners name in ink on page 364 shows it can be no later than "dated May 1676". Text starts on page A3 of "The Preface unto the King's Majefty" and ends on page 534 after Thomas Willsford's contribution ( his appendix was added in 1662) "Intereft money forborn" with one page of "To every young Arithmetician, or Practicioner in Numbers, who fhall perufe thefe Books.". Pages have seen some repair or strengthening (professionaly done?) in places. Although book is not fragile, pages are thin in part. Book obviously shows signs of age. Book has been rebound into plain tan cloth. Photos can be sent on request. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

DESCARTES, RENATUS. - [THE FIRST TEXTBOOK OF PHYSIOLOGY]
Lugduni Batavorum (Leyden), Apud Petrum Leffen & Franciscum Moyardum, 1662. 4to. Bound in an exquisite recent pastiche-binding of full mottled calf with a richly gilt spine. Five raised bands and red gilt title-label. A very nice, clean, and fresh copy, with some light occasional browning. (36), 121, (1) pp. + 10 plates. Complete with all 56 woodcut and engraved text-illustrations (many of which are full-page) and the 10 full-page engraved plates (several folded), one of which is the heart-plate with the 6 moveable parts, the Cardiac-flaps. A very good copy with good margins. ¶ First edition of Descartes' seminal treatise on man, the first European textbook of physiology, constituting an epochal work of modern thought, defining the mechanism of man as it does. "In the Treatise of man, Descartes did not describe man, but a kind of conceptual models of man, namely creatures, created by God, which consist of two ingredients, a body and a soul. "These men will be composed, as we are, of a soul and a body. First I must describe the body on its own; then the soul, again on its own; and finally I must show how these two natures would have to be joined and united in order to constitute men who resemble us"." (SEP). This highly influential work was the first to present a coherent description of bodily responses in neurophysiological terms that are still, to a wide extent, accepted today. In his attempt to solve the central question around which almost all philosophical thought had revolved since the time of Aristotle, what the relation between the soul and the body actually is, Des … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DRAWINGS - MOSAIC FLOORS].
A book of 40 detailed colour drawings showing the elaborate patterns in the mosaic marble tile floors of five different churches, with eight examples from each church: Santa Maria Maggiore (1-8), Santi Giovanni e Paolo (9-16), San Marco (17-24), Sant' Alessio (25-32) and Sant' Ivo (33-40). All probably refer to the Roman churches of these names, though the Basilica di San Marco in Venice also has elaborate mosaic floors. Some of the mosaics are in the Mediaeval Italian style called Cosmatesque, but some may date from the Renaissance. Besides a wide variety of triangular, square, rectangular, diamond, hexagonal, and octagonal tiles, there are many cut with circular edges and a few irregular quadrilaterals. Some are assembled to form stars in a hexagonal grid, round sunburst patterns and an endless variety of other patterns. All patterns show a rotational symmetry around the centre point or a repeating pattern in a square or hexagonal grid. The colouring of many of the tiles shows various styles and colours of marble veins. The drawings are difficult to date exactly. The leaves used for the drawings show a single paper stock, very close to Piccard VI, watermarks V.423 & V.424 (Rome 1662). The drawings could have been made as early as ca. 1662, but the lettering of the names of the churches seems more likely to date from the 18th century. In 1752, Monsignor Giuseppe Alessandro Furietti, a prelate from Bergamo, published an illustrated book on mosaics from classical Rome to his own day: De Musivis, Rome, 1752. This marked a new interest in such antiquities, but he illustrates ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

MEJER, JOHANNES - ANGELN, SCHWANSEN.
*** Kobberstukket kort over Angeln og Schwansen.

FULLER, Thomas (1608-1661)
London: Printed by J.G.W.L. and W.G. 1662. First Edition [with the Index also in 1st. edition] Folio, engr. portrait by D. Loggan, + 3 leaves (title, Dedication, To the Reader) + 494 leaves (text) + 6 leaves (Index), light waterstain on title some foxing (occasionally heavy) and browning throughout (as usual), otherwise a very good copy, bound in full antique-style calf, 3-line fillet borders in blind, morocco label on spine. The pagination in this work is exceedingly erratic, and the signatures are not much better. For example sigs. E and K are only 3 leaves, Rr, Ss, and Zzz[z] are not required at all, and many others are 2 leaves instead of 4. A very full collation, both by signature and by pagination, is given by Strickland Gibson with which the present copy has been carefully compared. It is warranted complete. Some copies contain an index which was first printed by Olive Payne in 1737 on 6 leaves [as in the present copy], and reprinted by W. Pickering on 5 leaves c. 1825 "The Worthies is among other things a dictionary of national biography, a series of county histories, a topographical and historical gazetteer, a guide-book, and a dictionary of proverbs..... Fuller was conscientious, according to his light, in trying to check authorities. Besides, he jogged indefatigably about the country to inspect public records, manuscripts, places, and buildings, and to question natives and surviving relatives... The Worthies is a lineal descendant of the mediaeval encyclopedias. Apart from the lists of sheriffs and gentry, we skip at our risk, for Fuller's best goods ma … [Click Below for Full Description]
