STENO, [Niels STENSEN]
Leyde, J. Chouet, 1662. ____ Illustré par 3 planches dépliantes. Une charnière fendillée. Bon exemplaire.***** First edition. Stensen stated that the true purpose of the glands was to secrete fluid. "This discovery led Stensen to consider every fluid in the body as a glandular secretion. He then found a series of glands furnishing fluid to each of the body cavities. He likewise sought the afferent and efferent ducts of secretion. Stensen still used the name "lymph" for all watery glandular secretions, because he was not yet able to differentiate between them and to specify them chemically and physiologically. In the course of this basic research Stensen presented in his Leiden dissertation new discoveries of glands in the cheeks; beneath the tongue; and in the palate, whose structure of veins, arteries, nerves, and lymph vessels he also described. In his Observationes anatomicae (1662), dealing with his new discoveries concerning the glands, he described the lachrymal apparatus in great detail." DSB 13, 33. Garrisson & Morton 973. Norman 2010. In-12. Collation : (12), 108 pp., 3 planches hors-texte. Veau beige, dos à nerfs. (Reliure du XIXe.).

BARLAEUS CASPAR/BLAEU JOHANNES
Amsterdam 1662 - Copper engraving, mm 422x540, original color. One of the most decorative and beatiful maps of Brazil ever published, among the first maps not from portuguese sources, drawn after actual surveys by Georg Markgraf and Elias Herckmanns, originally in Barlaeus's Rervm per Octennivm in Brasilia published by Blaeu in 1647 and later inserted in Blaeu's Atlas Major. Richly decorated with a highly interesting and decorative scene with a procession of indians Tupinamba carrying a dutch flag in front of a sugar mill; the bottom part of the map depicts sea battles. The complete set of maps was also assembled into a large wall map, Brasilia qua parte paret Belgis. The maps then appeared in the Atlas Maior in 1662. Very good condition.

BLAEU"S FAMOUS WORLD MAP"Nova Et Accuratissima Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula.' Copper engraving with original hand colouring from the "Atlas Maior' published by Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam, 1662. Size: 40,0 x 54,0 cm (plus margins). Very nice copy.The last world map to be published under the Blaeu imprint. This map is the spectacular fronticepiece of the great cartographic work of the 17th century, Joan Bleau"s Grand Atlas. Galileo overlooks the Western Hemisphere, Tycho Brahe, the teacher of Joan Bleau"s father, is depicted on the right. On the west of North America is the mysterious 'Island" of California."This new world map prepared by Joan Blaeu for his eleven-volume Atlas Maior in 1662 is, unlike its predecessor with its marginal city views and native peoples, in two hemispheres. As with all productions by the firm of Blaeu, the engraving and layout and elegance of decoration are of the highest standard.Outside the twin hemispheres at the top we see the classical gods that personify each planet and Apollo, the Sun. Each planetary deity is portrayed with his astrological attributes: Mercury with flying cap and caduceus; Venus with cupid at her side; Mars armed for battle; Jupiter with thunderbolts; and Saturn brooding and holding a flag of a six pointed star. At the base are four allegorical personifications of the seasons, each on a chariot. All of which place Earth in a larger context and make the map a celebration of the Western European scientific and exploratory achievements.The fire of 1672 ravaging the Blaeu publishing house, put an end of Blaeu"s production of their … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLAEU, Jan (1596-1673)
[Amsterdam: Blaeu, 1662. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour and gilt embellishments, mild discolouration at center fold, overall very good condition. A handsome example of Blaeu's English county map with exceptional original colour and highlights in gold This beautifully presented county map of Hertfordshire from Johan Blaeu's Atlas Mayor, sino Cosmographia Blavania... is from the only Spanish edition of this great work. The map itself is based on John Speed's map, published in 1612, though without the town plans. Blaeu's map includes the coats of arms of two prominent families. The title cartouche illustrates Hertfordshire's relationship to London in that the county supplied corn and hay to the pleading Londoners pictured on the right hand side of the title. Because of its proximity to London, Hertfordshire had many country houses, reflected in some of the placenames on the map: Waterford Hall, Aldbery Hall, Shingle Hall, and, of course, Waymer Castle. BLAEU, Jan (1596-1673)
Amsterdam: Jan Blaeu, 1662. Copper-engraved map, with original colour. Latin text on verso. Skillful marginal repair to center fold. An aesthetic triumph and the culmination of Dutch cartography. This is the new world map prepared by Blaeu for the eleven volume Atlas Maior of 1662. Unlike its predecessor with its marginal city views and native peoples, this is a double hemispheric map with the classical gods that personify each planet and Apollo, the Sun. Each planetary deity is portrayed with his astrological attributes: Mercury with flying cap and caduceus; Venus with cupid at her side; Mars armed for battle; Jupiter with thunderbolts; and Saturn brooding and holding a flag of a six pointed star (a symbol in Saturn worship). Just below to the left and right are portraits of Claudius Ptolemy and Amerigo Vespucci. At the base are four allegorical personifications of the seasons, each on a chariot. All of which place Earth in a larger context and make the map a celebration of the Western European scientific and exploratory achievements. This was the key map to Blaeu's Great Atlas: the culminating work of 100 years of Dutch cartography and 300 years of European seafaring. It is one of the most beautiful world maps ever made. BLAEU, Willem
Willem Blaeu, Amsterdam 1662 - This detailed map of eastern Switzerland depicts the Graubunden Canton. Includes Chur, Davos, St. Moritz, etc. The region of Graubunden was once part of the Roman Empire's Raetia province. Throughout, the map labels cities, towns, villages with topography beautifully rendered in profile. The four corners of the map include beautifully engraved cartouches with the title cartouche engraved by Philip Cluver featuring soldiers and river gods. Engraved by Simon Hamersveldt. The map was originally published by Jodocus Hondius and reissued by Blaeu with his own imprint. The map is in good condition with minor wear along original centerfold. Minimal foxing. Original pressmark is visible. Willem Blaeu (1571-1638) was a prolific Dutch mapmaker who started one of the most famous map publishing firms of the 17th century. It was at this time that the Dutch controlled the map trade, and their ornate and beautiful maps had immense popularity. Blaeu was instrumental in driving this dominance in his lifetime, and this legacy was continued by his sons. This is a beautiful example of his work. Map. Engraving. Image measures 15 x 19.5".

Amsterdam: Voor Joan. Cyprianus vander Gracht, 1663. Small 8vo (15.5 cm; 6.125"). [16], 122, [4], [2 (blank)] pp. Court (1618-85) and his brother Johan (1622-60) were the sons of Protestant émigrés from Flanders who settled in Leiden around 1613. Both were political and economic theorists; during their lifetimes Pieter was held to be more capable of the two. This work circulated in manuscript and was first published in Amsterdam in 1662 without the author's permission and with alterations and the addition of two important chapters and part of another by Johan de Wit. A later edition was published under the title Aanwysing der heilsame politike gronden en maximen van de republike van Holland en West-Vriesland, and that edition was translated into English as The true interest and political maxims of the republick of Holland and West-Friesland (London, 1702). Interest van Holland is Pieter Court's most famous and important work. In this critical analysis of the economic success of the Dutch Republic he ascribes the rise of Holland to a combination of free competition and free (i.e., republican) government. It clearly was a republican manifesto, so on one side of the polit … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHARLES I; ROYALTY
1662. CHARLES I.Basilika: The Workes of King Charles, The Martyr. With a collection of Declarations, Treaties, And other Papers concerning the Differences Betwixt His said Majesty and his Two Houses of Parliament.London: Printed by James Flesher for R. Royston, Book-seller to His Most Sacred Majesty, 1662.First folio edition of the works of King Charles I—the enormously popular (and vainly suppressed) testament to the executed monarch?'s political principles and spiritual devotion—the first edition directly approved by Charles II, beautifully printed with three magnificent double-page copper-engraved plates, engraved frontispiece (by Hollar) and title page, handsomely bound by Mansell.In late 1647, with tensions between Charles I and Parliament mounting, the king fled from Oliver Cromwell and the army. In November, he escaped "to the Isle of Wight, where he seems to have expected that Colonel Hammond, the governor of Carisbooke Castle, would protect him… Hammond, however, was faithful to his trust, and Charles became a resident, and before long a prisoner in the castle" (DNB). The next year, he would be tried and executed. "A few hours after the King's execution, his Eikon Basilike was in the hands of the people… So marvelous was its effect, that contemporary authorities declare that nothing but the Government's ingenious and persistent condemnations of the work prevented an immediate restoration of the crown"(Almack, 3). "Charles' posthumous campaign of persuasion was perhaps the most successful he ever waged… By the end of the first year of the Commonwealth, 'The King's B … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHARRON Pierre;
Louis & Daniel Elzevier, Amsterdam, 1662. In-16 (75x133 m). 8 ff. n. ch., 622 pp., 4 ff. n. ch. [Click Below for Full Description]
