First Edition. Full Sheepskin brown time. Back tooled raised the Grotesque. Upper cap threadbare. Piece of paper with modern title under the pen. Much more than a treaty of court life, the book is an accurate Caillière the gentry or honest man, he particularly stressed the moral responsibility there has been born noble. Some aspects of the books are more anecdotal and make a relatively sound comical if it required them to marry or not, and how should we do, the interest of science and books for a gentleman, if must be love ... Caillière never loses sight of social success, however, what he calls fortune. The question is how to ensure good fortune, while a man of qualities in the seventeenth. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Literatur: Nagler Monogrammisten 3; Bartsch 3; Bozzolato 82; Wallace, II, 109. Der als Malerpoet des italienischen Seicento geltende Maler, Radierer, Dichter und Musiker wurde als Sohn des Feldmessers Vito Antonio Rosa und der Giulia, Tochter des Malers Vito Greco und Schwester des Malers Ant. Domen. [Click Below for Full Description]

BROME (Alexander), editor]
London Printed for Henry Brome. and Henry Marsh, 1662. 8vo, 165 x 95 mms., pp. [viii], 376, 72, 83-200, including vertical half-title leaf, engraved frontispiece, engraved title-page, finely bound in 19th century dark green crushed morocco, panelled in gilt on covers, with second enclosed panel with triangular filigree designs in each corner, spine richly gilt in compartments, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled end-papers. A fine and attractive copy. Alexander Brome (1620 - 1666) was a poet and lawyer, and the title of this collection derives from the so-called "Rump Parliament," which followed the purging of the Long Parliament in 1648. The collection began life as short collection (89 pages) of poems published as Ratts Rhymed to Death in 1660, and reprinted the same year. The present text is obviously much enlarged, with many new poems, including twenty by John Cleveland. The poems in the second part are distinguished, if that's the right word, by their scatological and lubricious content, with obvious jokes and puns around the title word, e. g., "Bum=Fodder or, Waste-Paper, proper to wipe the Nations RUMP with, or your Own." Most of the songs were designed to be sung, with a number giving a tune. "The four Legg'd Elder; or a Relation of a Horrible Dog and an Elders Maid" is to be sung "To the Tune of The Ladies fall; Or Gather your Rose Buds, and 50 other Tunes." How many of these tunes have survived? Samuel Pepys, in an entry for 23 April 1660, alludes to a Rump song: having listened to a composition by Matthew Locke, his host "fell to singing of a song made upon t … [Click Below for Full Description]

CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, Miguel de
Brussels: Juan Mommarte, 1662.Brussels: Juan Mommarte,, 1662. 2 volumes, octavo (174 × 108 mm). Mid 19th-century grey polished sheep, marbled endpapers, three morocco labels to spines (two red, one green), titles gilt, covers delicately tooled in blind. Housed in custom brown linen chemises and a brown morocco-fronted cloth slipcase. Engraved frontispieces and 16 engraved illustrations by Frederik Bouttats. Spines slightly darkened, spines and edges a little rubbed, occasional thumb-soiling, a couple of tiny marginal annotations, minor dampstaining. Vol. I: K1 and K5 with repaired tears, affecting text, short closed tear to foot of R4, not affecting text; Vol. II with short closed tear to foot of engraved title. An exceptionally nice set. The first illustrated edition in Spanish, and only the second overall to bear illustrations (preceded by the 1657 Dutch edition). The first part of Don Quixote came out in 1605 and was an immediate and resounding success, and soon the work was known throughout Europe. The writing of the second part was stimulated by the publication of a spurious 'second part' in 1614; and it was an even greater success. The two parts were first published together in 1617 in Barcelona. There were no further editions for two decades. It is scarce in commerce, with nine copies traced at auction since 1952. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid in 1547. His first verses, on the death of Philip II's wife, appeared in 1569, but his literary career was interrupted as he served as a soldier for many years. He was eventually captured an … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLAEU, Johannes
Joan Blaeu, 1662-1665. - 13 parts in 9 volumes, Dutch text edition, folio (560 by 380mm), printed title, engraved allegorical title, 9 printed or engraved titles within engraved borders, 8 divisional titles, and 600 engraved maps, plans and views (most double-page) in contemporary hand-colour (general and engraved titles heightened in gold), many engraved and woodcut illustrations in text coloured, index leaf at end of each volume, contemporary Dutch vellum, gilt, central arabesques replaced with gilt arms of van de Werve, leather labels on spines, gilt edges, occasional light browning on a few maps and some text pages, several maps with small marginal repairs, some light staining at lower corners of vol. 1 and 8. A Dutch edition of "the greatest and finest atlas ever published" (Koeman). The ‘Atlas Maior’ in its various editions was the largest atlas ever published. It was justly famed for its production values, its high typographic standard, and the quality of its engraving, ornamentation, binding and colouring. The atlas frequently served as the official gift of the Dutch Republic to princes and other authorities. It is one of the most lavish and highly prized of all seventeenth-century illustrated books. “In its sheer size and scale it surpassed all other atlases then in circulation, including the efforts of his great predecessors Ortelius and Mercator.” (Brotton). The work was published simultaneously in five different languages, Latin, French, Dutch, Spanish, and German. What Blaeu managed to achieve was to contain the world in a book - an endeavou … [Click Below for Full Description]
