BLAEU?S FAMOUS WORLD MAP?Nova Et Accuratissima Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula.? Copper engraving with original hand colouring from the ?Atlas Maior? published by Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam, 1662. Size: 40,0 x 54,0 cm (plus margins). Very nice copy. The last world map to be published under the Blaeu imprint. This map is the spectacular fronticepiece of the great cartographic work of the 17th century, Joan Bleau?s Grand Atlas. Galileo overlooks the Western Hemisphere, Tycho Brahe, the teacher of Joan Bleau?s father, is depicted on the right. On the west of North America is the mysterious ?Island? of California.?This new world map prepared by Joan Blaeu for his eleven-volume Atlas Maior in 1662 is, unlike its predecessor with its marginal city views and native peoples, in two hemispheres. As with all productions by the firm of Blaeu, the engraving and layout and elegance of decoration are of the highest standard.Outside the twin hemispheres at the top we see the classical gods that personify each planet and Apollo, the Sun. Each planetary deity is portrayed with his astrological attributes: Mercury with flying cap and caduceus; Venus with cupid at her side; Mars armed for battle; Jupiter with thunderbolts; and Saturn brooding and holding a flag of a six pointed star. At the base are four allegorical personifications of the seasons, each on a chariot. All of which place Earth in a larger context and make the map a celebration of the Western European scientific and exploratory achievements. The fire of 1672 ravaging the Blaeu publishing house, put an end of Blaeu?s production of their … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLAEU Willem
1662. BLAEU, Willem. Canibales Insulae. [Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu, 1662]. Original engraving on laid sheet (image measures 21 by 16 inches), handsomely framed (entire piece measures 29-1/2 by 25-1/2 inches). $1700.Large original hand-colored Blaeu map of the Canibales Insulae (the Lesser Antilles) from the famous Atlas Major (1662), its first appearance. In 1630, Willem Janzzon Blaeu, the official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company, published his first world atlas, the Atlantis Appendix, with 60 maps. The ensuing series of Blaeu atlases reached their grand culmination in 1662— in the monumental 12-volume Atlas Major, “the greatest and finest atlas ever published” (Koeman). All Blaeu maps are embellished in the ornate Baroque style, and many rank among the most beautiful ever made. They “epitomize the ‘golden age of Dutch cartography” (Potter, 41). This splendid map is the first Dutch map devoted solely to the Lesser Antilles. It comes from the first Latin edition of the Atlas Major, Volume 11 (America), and appeared here for the first time— making it relatively scarce. The map covers the windward and leeward islands from eastern Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to Trinidad and the Venezuelan coast. The title Canibales Insulae (Islands of the Cannibals) reflects the European image of the mysterious islands of the New World, created by contemporary accounts of savage Caribbean warriors who devour their captives. Shirley I, 241. Koeman I, 199-202. Fine condition, with only a bit of offsetting from being folded. Handsomely framed.

BOYLE, Robert.
Oxford: H. Hall for T. Robinson [and London: J.G. for Thomas Robinson], 1662. Second edition, containing the first announcement of Boyle's law. This second edition is "particularly important for what Boyle called an 'hypothesis' but what we know as 'Boyle's Law': that the volume of air in a confined space varies inversely as the pressure. He demonstrated this by much experimental detail: with experiments on rarefaction performed by others, including Hooke, and on compression performed by himself" (PMM). Boyle's law is stated in the second part of this edition, his Defence against the attacks of Linus on the first edition of this work (1660). "In the first edition of the <em>New Experiments</em> (1660), Boyle had published his experiments proving that (1) air has weight and exerts pressure; (2) the phenomena associated with suction pumps and siphoning are caused by the evacuation of air; (3) air is necessary for life, flame and the transmission of sound; and (4) air is permanently elastic. These statements were attacked by many critics, whom Boyle refuted in an appendix to the second edition, a chapter of which describes the experimental attempts to measure atmospheric pressure that led to the formulation of Boylc's Law" (Norman).</p> <p>"Boyle had long been interested in the air, partly in connection with the Oxford physiologists' concern with the nature of respiration, and partly because of the extent to which air might account for phenomena like solidification, which he had observed in 'The History of Fluidity and Firmness' in <em>Certain Physiological Essays. </em>Hence … [Click Below for Full Description]

Much more than a treaty of court life, the book is an accurate Caillière the gentry or honest man, he particularly stressed the moral responsibility there has been born noble. Some aspects of the books are more anecdotal and make a relatively sound comical if it required them to marry or not, and how should we do, the interest of science and books for a gentleman, if must be love ... Rosa, Salvator (1615 Arenella/Neapel Rom 1673)
[Click Below for Full Description]
