GOEDAERT, J.
Middelburg, J. Fierens (1662-1669). 3 volumes. Small-8vo (150 x 92mm). pp. (40), 152, 16; (24), 288, (16); (18), 208, with 3 handcoloured engraved frontispieces, 1 handcoloured engraved portrait of Goedaert and 152 beautifully handcoloured engraved plates on 126 leaves. Later green morocco, richly gilt ornamented spines, with red gilt lettered label, sides with gilt border. "First edition of the first basic work on entomology. It is also the first colour plate book in the Low Countries" (Landwehr 64). One of the very rare coloured copies. The coloured copies were illuminated by the author (See Landwehr p. 3). Johannes Goedaert (1617-1668) was a famous Dutch landscape and flower painter who lived all his life in Middelburg. "No botanical or zoological drawings are extant. An impression of them however is conveyed by his 'Metamorphosis Naturalis' with its 126 superb engravings. The book describes the results of his investigation into the metamorphosis of insects, accompanied by a large amount of original observations, some of which were prompted by experiments with his own cultures. The book stood model for several other celebrated treatises on the subject, for example Maria Sibylla Merian" (Segal, Flowers and nature, p. 198). A fine copy with superb colouring of the frontispieces, plates and portrait.//Landwehr, Studies in Dutch Books with coloured plates, 64.

King Charles I of England
London : Printed by James Flesher for R. Royston ., 1662. First edition. [British Museum Catalog denotes 1st edition). 1662 1st FOLIO ed Eikon Basilike King Charles I England Martyr English Civil War I would rather choose to wear a crown of thorns with my Saviour, than to exchange that of gold, which is due to me, for one of lead, whose embased flexibleness shall be forced to bend and comply to the various and oft contrary dictates of any factions, when instead of reason and public concernments they obtrude nothing but what makes for the interest of parties, and flows from the partialities of private wills and passions. I know no resolutions more worthy a Christian king, than to prefer his conscience before his kingdoms. – King Charles I, England, Eikon Basilike A first edition printing of the works of Charles I, King of England. “A few hours after the King's execution, his Eikon Basilike was in the hands of the people.” This book is collectively a set of meditations during the King’s imprisonment and consisted of many of the government’s problems and corruption. (Almack, 3) “The work is a masterpiece in its expression of Charles’ principles, personal feelings, and prejudices, and by making a martyr of this Stuart king, exercised a considerable influence on English history” (Kunitz & Haycraft, 212). Item number: #595 Price: $2500 King Charles I of England Basilika : the workes of King Charles the martyr : with a collection of declarations, treaties, and other papers concerning the differences betwixt His said Majesty and his two houses of Parliament London : Printed by Jame … [Click Below for Full Description]

STENO, NICOLAI (NIELS STENSEN). - [THE FOUNDATION OF THE STUDY OF GLANDS AS A SCIENCE]
Lugduni [Leiden], Jacobum Chouët, 1662. 12mo. Partly uncut in a nice later full calf binding (19th century?) with five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Hinges with a bit of wear and small piece of leather lacking on top of spine. Vague previous owner's name in contemporary hand to lower part of title-page. Ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. Vague traces after stamp on p. 108. A fine copy. (12), 108 pp. + 3 folded plates. ¶ The rare first edition of Steno's early and first major discovery, being the findings of the 3 main Ducts and glands of the eye, the mouth and the nose, among these the first account of the excretory duct of the parotid gland now named "Stensen's Duct". He correctly stated that the true purpose of the glands was to secrete fluid and "with [the present work] Nicolaus Steno had established the study of glands as a science". (Snorrason). His careful dissections of animal, and later human, brains were revolutionary. He demonstrated that tears are secrated by specific glands, thus striking a deadly blow to the ancient notion of cerebral excretion, even disproving the speculations of scholars such as Descartes, who believed that the corpus pineale (a brain gland) was the connecting point between soul and body.Steno arrived in Holland in March 1660 and was given lodging by the city's physician Gerad Blaes (Latin: Blasius) who himself had studied in Copenhagen and was a friend of Thomas Bartholin. A year later Steno wrote in a letter to Bartholin: "After I had been given leave by Blasius to dissect on my own in the museum, I bought a she … [Click Below for Full Description]

Warmholtz Bibliotheca historica Sueo-Gothica 2518, noten. BLAEU, W
Cenomanorum Galliae regionis typus Vulgo Le MansBeautifully colored map of the region surrounding Le Mans, in northwest France, published by the Blaeu firm. Accompanying Dutch text on verso.Born in Alkmaar, Holland, William Janszoon Blaeu settled in Amsterdam, where he became a well-respected globe maker and publisher.  He founded the Blaeu firm in 1596, and he earned an appointment as mapmaker to the Dutch East India Company in 1634; thereafter, he had access to information unavailable to his contemporaries.  Also to his advantage, Blaeu studied under Tycho Brahe-mathematician, scientist and the most noted astronomer of the time.  Blaeu was said to be Brahe's most famous pupil. The Blaeu firm, which was carried on by his two sons after his death, was the most productive cartographic establishment in the Netherlands until it was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1672.  The historical importance of Blaeu maps make them an essential part of a fine antique map collection. Blaeu maps are recognized immediately by the beauty of their ornamentation.  Whereas 16th-century publishers decorated their maps with strap-work designs in black and white, the Blaeu maps were embellished with decorative swags, symbols, coat of arms, city views, and large pictorial cartouches, and they were often hand-colored to meet Baroque tastes.BLAEU, WAmsterdam, 1662Original color508  x  607 mmSome discoloration along center crease and along paper edges; areas of discoloration in the top right and left margin corners; a few very small repaired tears along bottom edge. Very nice original coloring.

Achillini, Claudio (1574-1640).
Venice: Zaccaria Conzatti, 1662. Hard cover. Very Good/All of the defining characteristics of baroque poetry are shown to their best advantage in this collection by Marino's friend and follower. This collection also includes an essay, and Achillini's correspondence (including the letter on the plague that Manzoni incorporated sarcastically into I Promessi Sposi, and the description of a monk that Croce called "not only significant, but beautiful"). First published in 1656.. 12mo (14 cm); 346, [2 blank] pages. Extra engraved title page. Typographic and woodcut ornaments. Bound in contemporary vellum. Binding sound and entire. Copenhagen (Hafniae), Literis Henrici Gödiani Reg. & Academ. typographi, 1662. 8vo. (I),30,(1);(36) leaves. Calf 15 cm (Ref: Hoffmann 2,580; Schweiger 1,204; Graesse 4,384; Ebert 13049; Brunet 3,1403) (Details: Back skillfully repaired in antique style, with 5 raised bands. Boards with double fillet gilt borders. Marbled endpapers) (Condition: Edges of boards worn, corners bumped. A bookplate on the front pastedown) (Note: The Periegesis ad Nicomedem regem is a didacted poem in iambic verse that is falsely attributed here to the ancient geographer Marcianus Heracleota (Heracleensis), and that was later known, though again without any foundation, under the name of Scymnus Chius. Nowadays it goes under the name of Pseudo-Scymnus. Marcianus Heracleota lived in the 5th century A.D. The poem is dedicated to Nicomedes, king of Bithynia. This is probably Nicomedes III, a monarch who reigned from 91 to 76 B.C. Scymnus of Chios lived before Nicomedes III. What is left of the poem, was first published in 1600. This 1662 edition numbers 746 verses. The edition of Meineke of 1846 already numbered 978 verses, and the edition of Diller of 1952 has 1026 verses. The portions that have been preserved contain the introduction together with a description of the coastal areas of Europe. The information it offers is based on the ancient geographers Theopompus and Ephorus, and gives a picture of the Hellenic oikumene. The book was designed as a popular compendium for general use. 'But while its writer gives a long list of authors whom he had consulted, or professed to consult, he was wholly with … [Click Below for Full Description]
