VAENIUS, Ernestus.
Brussels: Franciscus Foppens, 1662. Small 8vo (154 x 86 mm). [8], 60, [1], [3 blank] pp. Line-engraved title vignette & 28 engraved illustrations in text, some two to a page, most of female busts, four of animals' heads, the last two showing full-length female figures including a saint next to a palm tree. Faint offsetting of engravings; slight scuffing to extremities of binding,. Bound ca. 1790-1810 in French citron morocco, triple gilt fillet framing sides, smooth spine gold-tooled with fleurons and monogram AAP or AAR, black calf lettering-piece, board edges & turn-ins gilt, pale blue silk liners, vellum flyleaves, edges gilt (faint small stain on upper cover). Provenance: Pierre Bulteau de Préville, 18th-century engraved armorial bookplate by P. Giffart (mounted on title verso), his sale September 1727; unidentified owner, monogram on binding; George Hibbert (1757-1837), penciled note of acquisition at the Hibbert sale, 1829, shelfmark W3780; Laurent Currie, bookplate. *** Only Edition. A fine copy of an eccentric treatise on female looks. Vaenius derives his canon of beauty from verses of the Canticum Canticorum, and compares different facial types to specific animals. Each of the 14 chapters opens with a verse from the Song of Songs, and concludes with Vaenius' own(?) Latin verses. Many of the neat outline engravings of female heads or figures are paired with pictures of the relevant animal. At times the author interprets the biblical verses too literally, as if to buttress his physiological theories, but elsewhere his exegesis is straightforward and insightful. BARLAEUS CASPAR/BLAEU JOHANNES
Copper engraving, mm 422x535, colored. No text on verso. One of the most decorative and beatiful maps of Brazil ever published, among the first maps not from portuguese sources, drawn after actual surveys by Georg Markgraf and Elias Herckmanns, originally in Barlaeus's Rervm per Octennivm in Brasilia published by Blaeu in 1647 and later inserted in Blaeu's Atlas Major. Richly decorated with a highly interesting and decorative scene depicting life in a farm; the bottom part of the map depicts sea battles. The complete set of maps was also assembled into a large wall map, Brasilia qua parte paret Belgis. The maps then appeared in the Atlas Maior in 1662. Good condition, two light vertical long creases near centerfold reinforced on verso.

[DRAWINGS - CHINESE].
A series of 8 pen and ink drawings (5 coloured, 1 also highlighted in gold), illustrating a Chinese novel, possibly the 14th-century Sanguo yanyi or Romance of the Three Kingdoms. All mounted on European paper (6 on 3 different patterns of decorated paper). The paper of the drawings ranges from 23.5 x 14 cm to 24 x 15 cm. In the backing paper of number 7 one can make out an Amsterdam coat of arms watermark. It is difficult to see clearly but seems to follow the general style of Laurentius 71-95 (1662-1675). They show the following (outdoor and indoor scenes):1) 2 warriors on horseback, one of whom has just beheaded the other and carries his head away (the beheaded warrior has not yet fallen from his horse), while his superior watches on horseback with 2 attendants.2) a man standing with a spear in the prow of a boat, while 2 men and a woman sit at a tea table in the boat, which flies a flag and pennant.3) 5 people on 2 boats, one flying a flag and pennant.4) 4 soldiers bringing a woman to a dignitary at his house.5) a delegation visiting a dignitary.6) 2 men playing go, with 4 attendants and a guard.7) a dignitary at a writing table, with attendants and visitors.8) a seated dignitary with 6 standing figures, 1 with a document at a table. With this series, we include 2 woodblock prints (1 coloured) and 1 watercolour drawing:9) watercolour drawing of irises along a stream with hills in the background (17 x 22.5 cm)10) rectangular woodblock print of a Samauri at a tea ceremony (14 x 10 cm)11) octagonal woodblock print of a monk(?) riding a dragon-like horse, with an attendant o … [Click Below for Full Description]

[CHARLES II]
London: Printed for the Author, 1662. 32pp, [1]. With a woodcut frontispiece, trimmed and window-mounted. Recent red morocco, lettered in gilt. A trifle sunned and rubbed, soiling to upper board. Many leaves expertly remounted at gutter, touching text of A2, without loss of sense. Occasional slight shaving to upper margin touching pagination numerals. An anonymous narrative of the tribulations suffered by Charles II following defeat at the Battle of Worcester apparently 'issued by special command', likely in an attempt to profit from the Restoration. The terminal leaf bears a statement from the publisher announcing their intention to print a further volume should this first part find success - it would appear that this did not come to fruition. Rare, with ESTC locating copies of this octavo edition at only two locations in the British Isles (BL and Oxford), and one further in North America (Minnesota). Copies of the quarto edition are recorded at two British locations (BL and Oxford), with none elsewhere. ESTC R219459, Wing W1861.. First octavo edition. 8vo.

[BROME (Alexander), editor]:
London, Printed for Henry Brome...., and Henry Marsh..., 1662, 1662. 8vo, 165 x 95 mms., pp. [viii], 376, 72, 83-200, including vertical half-title leaf, engraved frontispiece, engraved title-page, finely bound in 19th century dark green crushed morocco, panelled in gilt on covers, with second enclosed panel with triangular filigree designs in each corner, spine richly gilt in compartments, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled end-papers. A fine and attractive copy. Alexander Brome (1620 - 1666) was a poet and lawyer, and the title of this collection derives from the so-called "Rump Parliament," which followed the purging of the Long Parliament in 1648. The collection began life as short collection (89 pages) of poems published as Ratts Rhymed to Death in 1660, and reprinted the same year. The present text is obviously much enlarged, with many new poems, including twenty by John Cleveland. The poems in the second part are distinguished, if that's the right word, by their scatological and lubricious content, with obvious jokes and puns around the title word, e. g., "Bum=Fodder or, Waste-Paper, proper to wipe the Nations RUMP with, or your Own." Most of the songs were designed to be sung, with a number giving a tune. "The four Legg'd Elder; or a Relation of a Horrible Dog and an Elders Maid" is to be sung "To the Tune of The Ladies fall; Or Gather your Rose Buds, and 50 other Tunes." How many of these tunes have survived? Samuel Pepys, in an entry for 23 April 1660, alludes to a Rump song: having listened to a composition by Matthew … [Click Below for Full Description]

Christopher Lehmann
Frankfurt: John Gottfiedt Schonwett, 1662. See pictures. Binding is in a wonderful condition. Loss of bottom right corner of one blank unpaginated front endpaper, chipping around both blank endpapers. The title page has a few barely discernible moisture marks (bottom right, top left gutter) but they are gone by the page 15. All pages toned. Occasional spot or chipping. Between the two sections of the book someone pasted in, at the foreedge, a small piece of metal that delineates the start of the second work/section. Very last printed page (register) has some loss at foreedge that doesn't affect text. A rich repertory of German proverbs from the early 17th century (this is a later edition). Title translates roughly, Flowers of Politics, Political Sentiments, Doctrines, Regulations, Expressions of Theology, Juris, Political, Historical, Philosophy, and the Poets. The Germans claim that this was one of the best collections for many years. Just recently a modern author quoted this work, and the claim that a good King is much like a clock (Technology and the Early Modern Self, Cohen). "All's Well that Ends Well", Wikiquote accredits to this work by Lehmann; although regional sayings are hard to attribute to a specific person. In a handsome fine binding (signed by "Hales"). About the Author Christopher Lehmann was a historiographer and town-guide of Speyer. Physical Attributes Measures 14.5 x 8.5 x 4.75 cm. 12mo.
