Territoria Anglen et Schwansen. Anno 1649.

*** Kobberstukket kort over Angeln og Schwansen.

Paris: Robert Ballard. 1662. Small quarto. Full polished mid-tan calf with decorative spine in compartments gilt, dark red leather title label gilt, boards with gilt- ruled edges with decorative bird-like motif at corners, inner dentelles gilt. 1f. (title with woodcut device), pp. 3-7 (prologue), 51[!52] pp. With named cast lists for each of 18 entrées for Cavalli's Ercole amante. With fine woodcut headpiece and large decorative woodcut initial to prologue; occasional decorative initials and woodcut head- and tailpieces throughout. Magriel p. 139. Slin p. 296. Not in Derra de Moroda. L'Hercule Amoreux, a ballet with music by Lully, marked the occasion of the marriage of Louis XIV to Maria Theresa of Spain; it was first performed in Paris at the Tuileries on February 7, 1662. "This opera-ballet... was doubtless the most brilliant of all the festivities organized in honor of the king's marriage. The performance, before an immense crowd which filled the new theatre to capacity, lasted for six hours... But the magnificence of the new theatre, the extraordinary boldness of the machines and decorations, the numerous and sudden changes of scenes, and the sumptuousness of the costumes kept the audience in a constant state of excitement. They paid very little attention to the opera itself, but the ballet entries, particularly the one in which the king and queen danced together, surrounded by the most illustrious representatives of the nobility, threw them into ecstasy... The complete spectacle is a very happy fusion of two genres producing what we may call a 'court-opera-ballet' in which the subjects of the ballet entries are closely related to the subject of the opera. The work is the result of the collaboration of at least six people: Camille Lillius wrote the Prologue, Buti wrote the libretto, Cavalli composed the music of the opera, Benserade devised the ballet entries and wrote the Vers, Lully composed the music of the ballet entries, and Gaspare Vigarani invented the machines." Silin: Benserade and his Ballets de Cour, p. 301. Ercole amante ("Hercules in Love"), an opera in a prologue and five acts by Francesco Cavalli to a libretto by Francesco Buti after Ovid’s Metamorphoses, was commissioned by Cardinal Mazarin to mark the occasion of the wedding of Louis XIV to Maria Theresa of Spain. Cavalli (1602-1676) "was the most performed, and perhaps the most representative, composer of opera in the quarter-century after Monteverdi and was a leading figure, as both composer and performer, in Venetian musical life." Thomas Walker in Grove online A French poet, librettist and playwright, "[Benserade's] art of telling the truth about society people with elegance and dexterity was not only appreciated by the salons and developed in all the current poetic genres – epigrams, madrigals, rondeaux, enigmas, portraits and epitaphs – but was peculiarly suited to the court ballet. Benserade's popularity coincided with Louis XIV's career as a dancer of some talent, and between 1651 and 1669, when the king retired from the stage, Benserade wrote verses for 23 royal ballets."         Theatrum Machinarum Novum.Nürnberg: Christoff Gerhard für Paul Fürst, 1661. First edition.

A fine copy of the rare original edition of this spectacular machine book. <br/><br/> &#10087; Stanitz 46; [for the 1662 edition see:] Macclesfield 2195; Horblit 132; Honeyman 359.<br/> This 1661 edition with text in German was eventually followed by three later editions and a translation into Latin. The 154 full page plates are mostly engraved by (or reworked from) Balthasar Schwan. Boeckler's artistic display of mechanisms of many sorts was, in part, a compilation from contemporary and slightly earlier sources. The fine plates demonstrate ingenious uses of the cogwheel in machinery ranging from gigantic mills to a humble kitchen spit (which is only slightly more complicated than usual examples - see plates 81-2). Motion drives, or is supplied by, the intricate systems of wheels employing water, wind, weights, horse power, human muscle, or some striking combinations of all these. The final plate represents important reportage of a very recently invented machine from the city in which this wonderful book was printed - This is Plate 154, which depicts a fire engine pump made by the Nuremberg compass-maker Hans Hautsch in 1658. The suction-and-force mechanism of Hautsch's clever device (described on pp. 60-1 of Boeckler's text) enabled twenty-four men to raise water to a height of eighty to one hundred feet in a continuous stream - (the 'foot' measure is expressed in the text as 'shoes'!) The text of the Deutsche Biographie suggests that Leibniz wrote of his admiration for this machine. Current historians of engineering view it as the basis of the modern fire engine. There are also plates in this compilation of a hand mill for making ink for copperplate printing (plate 5). There is a detailed depiction of a paper mill (plate 73) - showing one man at the vat holding a paper mold, another pressing sheets, sheets hanging to dry, reams tied up for shipment, and in a panel on the side: the water wheel and reams of paper being transported on the back of a donkey. <br/><br/> <i>Provenance</i>: Estate of Ambassador and Mrs. William H.G. FitzGerald, Washington, DC, by (Mrs. Fitgerald's) descent from Ignaz Petschek and Nikodem Caro, Austro-Hungarian Empire. Ignaz Petschek (1857-1934) was a Czech banker, with commercial interests in mining, coal distribution and major industry. During and after World War I, Petschek and his brother expanded their holdings in several mining companies in central Germany. After his death, his family holdings, as a Jewish business in Germany, were confiscated by the Nazi regime. Nikodem Caro (1871-1935), a member of a prominent Jewish family, was an industrial chemist and entrepreneur from Lodz. He studied chemistry in Berlin, and along with Adolf Frank, developed a patented process for creating calcium cyanamide synthesis. He left Berlin after the Nazis came to power, and died in Italy in 1935. <br/> There is an ownership inscription in ink written on the verso of a final (binder's) blank leaf dated 26 January 1705.. Folio (325 x 225 mm), contemporary full vellum over wooden boards, remains of brass clasps with the initial IR, vellum with a little spotting but in all a very fine and genuine copy prersrving the original end-appers. Fully complete: pp. [12, incuding engraved title], 68 and 154 full-page engraved plates. Some plates with short closed tears that have been repaired very well (almost unnoticeable)
