De Motu Animalium spontaneo Liber Unus: In quo partim Aristotelis de huius motus principio sententia illustratur, partim nova musculorum motus ratio indagatur

176, [3] pp. 8vo, cont. red morocco (joints carefully repaired), panelled in gilt, gilt fleurons in each corner, triple gilt fillet round sides, spine richly gilt, a.e.g. Paris: C. Cramoisy, 1660. First edition of a very rare book with a fine provenance; this is the first book of Petit (1617-87), physician and poet, who was a graduate of the medical school at Montpellier and a devoted Aristotelian. The present work is a defense of Aristotle's theories regarding the mechanics of the living organism against the physiological theories of Descartes. Petit's opinions ran counter to many scientists and physicians of the 17th century - for example, Hooke, Willis, and Borelli - who saw in Cartesian physiology exactly what Descartes had intended it to be: a method of mechanistic formulation by which traditional categories of physiological explanation could be circumvented. There is much on neural stimulation and its effect on the contraction and swelling of the muscles. Provenance: with the booklabel ("Bibliotheca Lamoniana") of Chrétien François de Lamoignon (1735-89), whose library was purchased by Payne and auctioned by him in London in 1793. Armorial bookplate and ownership inscription, dated 1795, of Robert Bland, M.D. (1740-1816), male midwife. His library was later sold by Sotheby's. Armorial bookplate of Peter Hall (1803-49), Anglican clergyman; his library was sold at Sotheby's 27 May 1850. A fine copy.

Paris, R. Soubret, 1660.

1660. 8vo. 80 pp. 18th-century blind-ruled brown calf, blindstamped arms of William Stirling Maxwell on the upper cover and his blind cipher on the lower cover. Spine and vertical title label gilt; turn-ins gilt. Marbled flyleaves. All edges red. Green silk marker. First edition in a western language of the celebrated autobiographical lament of the poet, royal secretary, and soldier Al-Tughra'i, who rose to Vizier only to be beheaded. His elegy, "Lamiyyat al-'Adjam", is probably the first major work of Arabic poetry published in the west. The other significant early Arabic work here contains an offering of proverbs selected from the "Exalted Aphorisms" of the fourth Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib (601-661), the only person born in Mecca's sacred Kaaba sanctuary, cousin and son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad. - The editor and Royal Interpreter for Arabic, Pierre Vattier (1623-47), translated these pieces into French for their stylistic elegance and textual importance. He held the Chair of Arabic at the Collège de France from 1658 until his death and contributed an extended opening essay on Arabic prosody, here in its only edition. - Front joint cracked, extremeties slightly bumped; title remargined at lower edge. Altogether a fine copy. Provenance: from the collection of the proverb bibliographer P. A. Gratet-Duplessis (1792-1853), recording the date of his acquisition (Lyon, 1828) and his paid price on the final flyleaf. In the sale of his library in 1856, the volume was described as a "joli exemplaire de ce curieux et rare petit volume" (p. 156, no. 969). A slightly later owner has quoted from Duplessis' bibliography on the second front flyleaf. Later bookplates of William Stirling Maxwell, Keir House, and Lt. Col. V. S. M. de Guinzbourg on pastedowns and flyleaf. Schnurrer 196. Zenker, BO 403. Cioranescu 65583. Gratet-Duplessis, Bibliographie parémiologique, 70.         Riposo dalla fuga in Egitto

Opera molto rara. "Etching, signed on plate at bottom centre. Example in the first state of three. Magnificent proof, on contemporary laid paper, ""three half - moons"" watermark, unusual margins, showing trace of vertical central fold, in very good condition. Although Bartsch doesn't mention three different states for this work, our example can be considered as a first state of three, before adding an inscription under the foot of the Virgin (second state) and the erasure of the same inscription (third). Only eight works by this author are known today, four of which are views of cities. A very rare print." Bartsch 2. 208 160

BY THE KING. A PROCLAMATION DECLARING THE CESSATION OF HOSTILITY, AND PRESERVING AN ENTIRE AMITY BETWEEN HIS MAJESTY, AND THE KING OF SPAIN

London: Printed by John Bill and Christopher Barker, 1660. Broadside, 13 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches. Affixed at corners to a slightly larger sheet. Near fine. Archivally matted, protected with mylar sheet. An early diplomatic proclamation by the recently restored British monarch, King Charles II, and part of his efforts to encourage British colonial and commercial expansion. Though not formally at war, hostilities existed between Britain and Spain, especially concerning the harassment of commerce at sea and colonies in the Caribbean. Five years earlier, the English under Cromwell had seized Jamaica from Spain, and in 1656, Spain lent their support to Charles II's restoration to the throne. In this document Charles II proclaims that "all prisoners, ships, goods, merchandize [sic], or whatsoever else taken upon one another, either by any of our subjects, or the subjects of our said dear brother, since said time of our arrival in England, be, and shall be, upon due proof thereof, redelivered and restored." At the same time, Charles II was negotiating with the Portuguese against Spanish interests in the New World, especially with regard to Jamaica, which the British ultimately retained. WING C3287.

Collection of family documents from the archives of the Counts Sermage de Szomszedvár, descendants of the Hungarian conspirator Ferenc Nádasdy, including his last will and testament in a ms. copy with autogr. authentication by Empress Maria Theresia. Various places, c. 1660-1830.

1660. 6 Imperial documents for members of the Nádasdy and Sermage families (issued by Franz Josef I, Franz I, Maria Theresia, Ferdinand I, and Ferdinand II), 4 portrait miniatures, several photographs and miniature coats-of-arms. Ferenc Nádasdy, a descendant of King Edward I Plantagenet and grandson of Ferenc Nádasdy, the "Black Prince" (1555-1604), who had led many successful campaigns against the Turks but is mainly remembered as husband of the "Blood Countess" Elizabeth Báthory (cf. T. Thorne, Countess Dracula. London 1998), served as Hungarian High Judge of the Crown Court. He was beheaded in Vienna on 30 April 1671 as one of the four principal leaders of the so-called Wesselényi conspiracy. The conspirators had conducted secret talks with France and Turkey for support against Emperor Leopold I; the conflict escalated when they arrested the Hungarian governor Count Rüdiger von Starhemberg. It was Nádasdy's failed attempt to throw off Habsburg rule that brought about Austria's absolutist and repressive regime in Hungary (cf. Encyclopaedia Britannica, s. v. "Wesselény Conspiracy"). Nádasdy's fortune and property were seized by the Crown, but the Emperor is said to have returned most of it to several of his children. Similarly, the change of name originally demanded of the sons was not enacted, as they served in high positions of church and state under their true name (cf. Wurzbach XX, 16). A fine ivory miniature portrait of Ferenc Nádasdy that was passed on within the family until the 19th century bears witness to the uninterrupted veneration of the executed national hero. The portrait is accompanied by an explanatory document by Nádasdy's great-granddaughter to her son, the poet and statesman Karl Johann Peter Graf Sermage von Szomszedvár (1792-1851). The 19-page document in booklet form prepared for Joseph Graf Nádasdy contains the text of several last wills and entailments concerning the family and bears Mariua Theresia's autogr. authentication and seal; it is countersigned by Nikolaus Palffy. The miniature portraits of Nádasdy's descendants by some of the most highly regarded portrait painters of their times, such as Wenzel Schránil (1821-84) and Georg Koberwein (1820-76), bear witness to the eminent position that the family had regained by the 19th century. - Detailed list upon request.
