Utan ort, (1658). 4:o. (12) s. Häftad. Denna variant ej i VD17, men jämför t.ex. 14:080766F. Bibl. danica III, sp. 150. Klemming, Sveriges förhållanden, s. 165. Warmholtz 4680, noten.

The full “Hydriotaphia” title page is intact. Bound in a later full calf binding with rubbing, wear and no spine label. Outer joints are neatly restored and inner hinges strengthened. Some age-toning and wear are visible on the extremities of the first title page; two tiny d’s are written in an early hand beneath a quote by Julius Scaliger. Front and rear blank fly leaves are lacking. A sheet of late 19th century handwritten biographical notes is pasted on the inside rear cover. Cromwell, Oliver; Queen Elizabeth; British History
1658. Very Good +. 1658 legal proclamation declaring that henceforth all future documents, statutes and the like would conform in tone, tenor and form to that established by Queen Elizabeth. Written in English and Latin by a scribe, not signed by Cromwell. Given that Cromwell died in 1658, this would be one of the last written declarations issued during his life and tenure as "Lord Protector", and was succeeded by his son. On fine parchment, 33.5 x 57 centimeters, with 5cm flap at bottom. Hand-lined in rose ink, with brown india ink script, including ornate initial and upper border. With two old notes of provenance on the verso, marking this as from Francis Brackenbury dated 1690, Thimbleby (North Yorkshire, England). Excellent condition with old slight folds, saddle-stich marks along the perimeter of the vertical edges. Oliver Cromwell (25 April 1599 – 3 September 1658) was an English military and political leader who was part of the joint republican, military and parliamentarian effort that overthrew the Stuart monarchy as a result of the English Civil War, and was subsequently invited by his fellow leaders to assume a head of state role in 1653. As such, Cromwell ruled as "Lord Protector" for a five-year segment (1653–58) of the 11-year period of republican Commonwealth and protectorate rule of England, and nominally of Ireland, Wales and Scotland. As one of the commanders of the New Model Army, he played an important role in the defeat of the King's forces, the royalists in the English Civil War. After the execution of King Charles I in 1649, Cromwell domi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Häftad i blått pappomslag, spricka upptill i ryggen. First and only edition. 2̊ [20], 483, [37] pp. Includes index and with a list of “Books Printed or Sold by Will. Leak.” to rear paste-down. William Style was one of the law reporters forced to cease publishing his law reports in Law French and he voices his criticism in the preface thus: "I have made these reports speak English, not that I believe they will be thereby more generally useful, for I have been always and yet am of opinion, that that part of the common law which is in English hath only occasioned the making of unquiet spirits contentiously knowing, and more apt to offend others than to defend themselves; but I have done it in obedience to authority, and to stop the mouths of such of this English age, who, though they be confessedly different in their minds and judgment, as the builders of Babel were in their language, yet do think it vain, if not impious, to speak or understand more than their own mother tongue." Paris: Pierre le Petit; 1658.. 448 S. Ldr. mit 5 künstlichen Bünden und Goldschmuck. Kanten etwas berieben und bestossen. Leder am Rücken teils professionell ausgebessert. Gold minimal abgeplatzt und mit minimalen Wurmlöchern. Im Ganzen jedoch sehr ordentliches Exemplar. Selten!.

Antwerp, Plantin-Moretus, 1658. 4to. xxiv + 398 + [2]p. Roman letter. Some ornamental woodcuts and vignettes in the text. Printer's device on title. Half calf; gilt. 'Naples Recovered', an epic poem in twelve cantos, describes the mid-15th century conquest of Naples by Alfonso V of Aragon, an ancestor of the author's. Devoted to extolling the ancient military glory of Spain so fashionable at this period of national decline, the book was first published in Zaragoça in 1651. Ticknor comments that the author aimed to conform to the safest epic models (II, 501-2). Francisco de Borja y Esquilache (1582-1658), a distinguished civil servant and knight of the Golden Fleece, enjoyed some reputation as a writer of lyrical poetry. During his term as viceroy of Peru (1615-21), he founded the University of San Marcos and fostered trade and industries. Some light foxing in places, otherwise a well preserved, crisp copy. Eckebrecht, Philip
1658. 380 x 680mm., large engraved hemispherical world map, surmounted by the two headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire bound in KEPLER, JOHANN. Tabulae Rudolphinae, quibus astronomicae scientiae, temporum longinquitate collapsae restauratio continetur. Ulm: Jonas Saur, 1627. 2 parts in one volume, folio (338 x 224mm). second issue of first 2 quires, engraved frontispiece by Georg Celer, large folding engraved map, woodcut diagrams in text, eighteenth-century vellum, early manuscript annotations, calculations and diagrams in margins, without the 4 inserted leaves ("Sportula genethliacis"), map supplied from another copy and washed, several printed marginal notes slightly shaved, binding slightly wormed on both covers. FIRST EDITION. These tables of planetary motion were completed by Kepler in 1601, at the request of Tycho Brahe shortly before his death. They gave far more accurate positions than those in previous tables. Casper identified three issues of the first two quires of this first edition: the present copy contains the second issue of both quires. A four-leaf "Sportula genethliacis missa de Tabularum Rudolphi usu in computationibus astrologicis" was added ti sine cioues at the end of the first part; it is not present in this copy. This rare and striking map shows a dramatic rendering of the two-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire. The map was prepared at the request of Eckebrecht's friend Johann Kepler. The map's arrangement of one bifurcated hemisphere on either side of a complete hemisphere faclitates the calculation of longitude using Kepler's table … [Click Below for Full Description]

VISSCHER, Nicolaes (1649-1702)
Amsterdam: [circa 1658]. Copper-engraved map, period hand-colouring in outline. 17 5/8 x 24 7/8 inches. Rare first state of Visscher's map of North and South America, one of the most influential mappings of the western hemisphere in the 17th century. "Although the map did not provide much in the way of cartographic advances, it had a large influence, future cartographers drawing upon either its geography or the distinctive cartouches. One of the most recognisable features is the large open lake in the place of the western Great Lakes ... The title is decorated with a scene showing the panning of gold or silver, with a native standing by under an umbrella. The cartouche top left bears a dedication to Cornelis Witsen, and depicts three angels helping a native Indian to heaven while the devil is fading away" (Burden). Cartographically, the map follows Blaeu's mapping from his world map of 1648, though depicts California as an Island as per the Briggs model. The map would be reissued after 1677, that second issue bearing a privilege line at the bottom of the map not present on the first issue. This map would prove influential to many future mappings of the western hemisphere, with similar maps issued by De Wit, Danckerts, Allard, and Ottens to the end of the 17th century. Burden, The Mapping of North America I: 332; McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island 48; Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast 378; Leighly 56; Van Ermen 19; Tooley "California as an Island," 29 in Tooley, The Mapping of America.
