DESMARETS DE SAINT-SORLIN (Jean).
Aug. Courbé, H. Le Gras & I. Roger, Paris 1657 - In-4 de 17 ff. lim. n.ch. et 464 pp., plein maroquin rouge à grain long, dos à nerfs orné, large dentelle dorée encadrant les plats, tranches dorées, dentelle dorée int., l'exemplaire a été lavé et sans doute mal rincé : le papier est resté fragile voire cassant par endroits, charnières renforcées, qques pet. taches d'encre. (Reliure anonyme, vers 1900). Jammes, Belles Ecritures, n° 26). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

RICHELIEU (DE) ARMAND JEAN DU PLESSIS
chez Sebastian Cramoisy et Gabriel Cramoisy. Cm. 23, pp. (12) 672 (ultima pagina erroneamente numerata 700). Quest'opera ben defini … [Click Below for Full Description]

Al-Makin, Jirjis ibn al-'Amid/ Pierre Vattier (translator).
Rémy Soubret, Paris, 1657. 44 pp. of Preface, 332 pp., text translated from Arabic by Pierre Vattier, period gilt decorated full calf binding, decorated gilt raised spine, marbled end papers, small unprofessional restoration of spine, ink marks on first few pages not affecting the text, sfew worm holes not affecting text, some wear to binding edges, dedicated to Cardinal Mazarin, first and only edition. The first started with the Creation and covered pre-Islamic times; the second dealt with the Islamic period down to his own times in 1260. For the pre-Islamic period, he used the Bible as a principal source for his history. For the Islamic period, he followed the example of the famous Islamic chronicler al-Tabari. Apparently he used the work of his predecessor Eutychius as well as that of his contemporary Ibn al-Rahib. His chronicle includes a succinct history of the patriarchs of Alexandria (summarised by A. Gutschmidt, 1890, pp. 395-525). It is here that the works of al-Makin and Ibn al-Rahib overlap, and it is difficult to distinguish who copied whom. This work was not hugely original as the author drew from earlier sources, including the world history of Ibn al-Rahib. However, the work was very influential both in the East and West. For example, it was used by the 14th-15th century Muslim historians Ibn Khaldun, al-Qalqashandi, and al-Maqrizi. The second half was published in Arabic and Latin in Leiden in 1625. The Latin version is a translation by Thomas Erpenius (van Erpen), under the title Historia Saracenica, while a French translation was made by Pierre Vattier as l … [Click Below for Full Description]

OWEN, John
1657 Welsh John Owen Epigrammata Epigrams Protestant Catholic Prohibited Index An important 17th-century printing of the epigrams of John Owen. Owen was a 16th-century Welsh epigrammatist known for his careful attention to accuracy with the Latin language. His epigrams were highly popular during and after his lifetime and were published in twelve books over the course of the early 1600s. Many of his epigrams deal with morality, the changing of times, and pro-Protestant ideals. He was so staunchly against the Catholic Church that ‘Epigrammata’ was placed on the Prohibited Book Index in 1654.

Pomponii Attici vita'; 'Epistolarum ad Brutum liber'; 'Epistolarum ad Quintum fratrem libri III'; 'Ad Octaviam Epistola una', and is preceded by a 8 page introduction of Paulus Manutius. The Elzevier edition was held in considerable esteem and was much sought after. Johannes Blaeu took advantage of this success and reissued the volume with Cicero's letters to Atticus, his brother Quintus, to Brutus, and the 'ad Octavium epistola', together with 'T. Pomponii Attici vita' by Cornelius Nepos, separately. Even the title is, apart from his own printer's mark, is an imitation of that of the Elzevier brothers. Derham, William.
Sixth Edition. Octavo. [16] lvi [8] 246 pages,[10] [3 foldout engravings]. Original Hardcover / bound in contemporary panelled calf. The book has been sympathetically rebacked to style. Besides a spot of hard green adhesive to the front board in very good condition. The armorial bookplate of Dr Blackett appears on the first pastedown. The text is complete and clean with the three foldout engravings of the cosmos to the rear, a little archival paper restoration to one of the engravings. William Derham FRS (26 November 1657 5 April 1735) was an English clergyman, natural theologian and natural philosopher. He produced the earliest, reasonably accurate estimate of the speed of sound. William Derham was the son of Thomas Derham. He was born at Stoulton, in Worcestershire, England. He was educated at Blockley, Gloucestershire and at Trinity College, Oxford from 1675 to 1679. He was ordained on 29 May 1681. In 1682, he became vicar of Wargrave, Berkshire and from 1689 to 1735 he was Rector at Upminster, Essex. While at Upminster, in 1716 he became a Canon of Windsor and the vestry minutes show that thereafter he divided his time between those two places. The parish registers of Upminster record his burial at St. Laurence's in 1735. However, the precise site of his grave is unknown and, in accordance with his wishes, there is no memorial to him in the church. In 1696, he published his Artificial Clockmaker, which went through several editions. The best known of his subsequent works are Physico-Theology, published in 1713 Astro-Theology, 1714 and Christo-Theology, 1730. All thr … [Click Below for Full Description]
