I: First French edition of the "General History of the World" ("Kitab al-Magmu' al-mubarak") by Girgis al-Makin ibn al-'Amid, known in the Latin tradition as Georgius Elmacinus. Born in Cairo in 602 AH (1205 AD) to a Coptic civil servant in the War Ministry, he later served in a similar function in Syria. His chronicle had previously been translated into Latin (by Erpenius) and English (by Purchas); the work "for the first time provided wider circles in the west with an overview of Islamic history from its beginnings to the Crusades and acquainted them with the prime of the Baghdad Califate, previously almost unreceived, through an account ultimately based on Tabari" (cf. Fück). - II/III: First French translation (issued in two parts) of this important critical, at times even satirical eyewitness account of the life of Tamerlane (Timur Lenk), the great Turkish conqueror of the 14th century. Graz - Gesamtansicht von Süden
Amsterdam, Janssonius, 1657. Zahn 1058/6. Nebehay-W. 277, 56. *** /// *** Copyright: Matthaeus Truppe - Stubenberggasse 7 - A-8010 Graz - Tel. +43 316 829552 *** /// *** Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 0 [Attributes: First Edition]

Basileae [Basel], Sumptibus et Typis Emanuelis König, 1657. Folio. Contemporary full mottled calf with 5 raised bands and title-labl to spine. Remains of a paper label to top of spine. The present edition constitutes the most complete collection of Agricola's works, and the present final Latin edition of "De Re Metallica" "is valuable because it contains few typographical or factual errors. The original woodcuts are present, but they are not quite as sharp after over a century of use through three previous editions. FINE CHART OF SUMATRA AND THE SOUTHERN COASTS OF MALAYSIA.?Sumatrae et Insularum Locorumque Nonnullorum Circumiacentium Tabula Nova.? Copper engraving published by Johannes Janssonius (Jan Jansson) of Amsterdam in 1657 as part of his Atlas Novus. With original hand colouring. Size: 49 x 58 cm.North is orientated to the left of the page. Singapore is probably identified just to the south of Ihor (Johor Bahru) as Senasur. As the map appeared in an atlas of sea charts, little interior detail is given but the coastlines, settlements and principal coastal features are identified. It is one of the earliest detailed depictions of Sumatra and remained the most important map of the region until well into the eighteenth century.A sailing ship and two cartouches embellish the chart: a title cartouche with three allegorical figures and a mileage scale with two surveying putti. In earlier times, Sumatra had been mistaken for the Island of Sri Lanka or Taprobana. The name Taprobana, had been applied to maps of Sumatra from the fifteenth century, after a misunderstanding by the Italian traveller Nicolo de Conti. De Conti dismissed the idea that Sri Lanka was Taprobana and so identified Sumatra as the mythical island described by geographers as Eratosthenes, Strabo, Pliny, Claudius Ptolemy and Cosmas.Price: ?850,-.

Savoyen is a cultural region in Western Europe. It comprises roughly the territory of the Western Alpsbetween Lake Geneva in the north and Dauphiné in the south. The historical land of Savoy emerged as the feudal territory of the House of Savoy during the 11th to 14th centuries. The historical territory is shared between the modern countries of France, Italy, and Switzerland. Installed by Rudolph III, King of Burgundy, officially in 1003, the House of Savoy became the longest surviving royal house in Europe. It ruled the County of Savoy to 1416 and then the Duchy of Savoy from 1416 to 1860. The territory of Savoy was annexed to France in 1792 under the French First Republic, before being returned to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1815. Savoy, along with the county of Nice, was finally annexed to France by a plebiscite, under the Second French Empire in 1860, as part of a political agreement (Treaty of Turin) brokered between the French emperor Napoleon III and King Victor Emmanuel II of the Kingdom of Sardinia that began the process of unification of Italy.

[Pascal] was an infant prodigy, whose work in mathematics and natural science attracted considerable attention before he was sixteen... [But he] will always be chiefly remembered as a moralist, more especially as the great apologist for Jansenism, the seventeenth-century French ascetic movement of reform inside the Roman Catholic Church... It was a process by which the magician could instantly gain knowledge or memory of all the arts and sciences. Each branch of knowledge or subject area was assigned a set of magical seals and characters known as notae. To set the process into operation, the appropriate notae were contemplated whilst reciting angelic names and magical orisons. However, it was regarded as a diabolical form of magic, since the knowledge was quickly acquired from ‘demons' without honest study” - Robert Turner (Elizabethan Magic). This edition is a verbatim reprint of the 1657 Robert Turner translation. Both the language and the spelling of the original edition have been maintained, to assure the integrity of this volume.
