Jacques Stella & Claudine Bouzonnet
First Edition wich, in all likelihood, could be in its very first print, before the numbering. [Click Below for Full Description]

WRIGHT, Edward
London,: Joseph Moxon, 1657. Description Quarto (196 by 146mm), engraved title, two large engraved folding maps, one on two sheets, four folding plates tipped-in, four engraved plates in the text, and numerous woodcut diagrams and letterpress tables throughout, early eighteenth century panelled calf, blind-tooled tulips at outer corners of central panel, rebacked. NotesEdward Wrights seminal work. Certain Errors in Navigation was first published by Wright in 1599, revised and then republished in 1610, then extensively improved by Joseph Moxon and reissued in 1657, with additions including Moxons own The Haven-finding Art, or the way to find any Haven or place appoynted at Sea. This last edition, the present text, is exceptionally important, because it contains Moxons map, A Plat of all the World.Edward Wright (1561-1615), an English scholar and sometime buccaneer, was the first person to explain the mathematical basis of the Mercator projection. In 1589, while still a fellow of his Cambridge college, Wright left the world of academia, and with dispensations from the crown and college, he joined a raiding party to the Azores under the pseudonym Captain Edward Carelesse to make navigational studies. Wright also claimed to have sailed with Sir Francis Drake to evacuate Sir Walter Raleighs Virginia colony, Roanoke. Wrights seafaring experience aided him when he helped Emery Molyneux with his terrestrial globe in 1592, and seven years later he produced his own work, Certain Errors of Navigation. In it he explains how to divide the meridian, which was of particular importance for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leiden: Elzevir, 1657. 12mo. [2], [22], 558, [2] pp. Engraved title by I. Hackius, errata leaf at end. 18th-century mottled calf, smooth spine gilt. Provenance: Lewis Stephen Pilcher (1845-1934), founding editor of 'The Annals of Surgery' (bookplate). Slight rubbing to binding / From the Collection of Allan B. Kirsner, M.D. Item #401894 "De Medicina is the oldest Western medical document after the Hippocratic writings. Written about 30 CE, it remains the greatest medical treatise from ancient Rome, and the first Western history of medicine. Celsus's superb literary style won him the title of Cicero medicorum. De medicina deals with diseases treated by diet and regimen and with those amenable to drugs and surgery. The surgical chapters contain the first accounts of the use of ligature, excellent descriptions of lateral lithotomy and hemiotomy, and the earliest discussion of the surgical remedies for mutilations - what we now call plastic surgery, including plastic operations for restoration of the nose, lips, eyelids, ears, etc. Celsus also included numerous important contributions to dentistry, including some of the earliest Western accounts of the treatment of toothache, oral surgery, tooth extraction, and fractures of the jaw" (Garrison-Morton-Norman, for the first edition of 1478). The civilizations in Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley and the Yellow River shared many similarities. These civilizations may well have exchanged technologies and ideas such as mathematics and the wheel. Other innovations, such as writing, seem to have been developed individually in each area. Cities, states and empires developed in these lowlands. The central steppe region had long been inhabited by horse-mounted nomads who could reach all areas of Asia from the steppes. The earliest postulated expansion out of the steppe is that of the Indo-Europeans, who spread their languages into the Middle East, South Asia, and the borders of China, where the Tocharians resided. The northernmost part of Asia, including much of Siberia, was largely inaccessible to the steppe nomads, owing to the dense forests, climate and tundra. … [Click Below for Full Description]

JANSSONIUS, JOHANNES
PASKAART VAN SUMATRA ?Sumatrae et Insularum Locorumque Nonnullorum Circumiacentium Tabula Nova.? Prijs: 850,-
