BISSCHOP, Jan.
Bibliotheca Walleriana 7382. Krivatsy 8899 for the 1657 ed.; Notaker 409; Hoogendoorn p. 104 nr. 4; Jesuit Books in the Dutch Republic, p. 52. The fourth edition of an anonymously published pharmacopoeia of medical distillery recipes. The first edition was published in Ghent 1653, which makes this the first book on pharmaceutical chemistry published in the Southern Netherlands. Only in the present 1667 edition the author's name appears in the approbation (f. *5 recto): I.B.S.I. = the Flemish Jesuit Jan Bisschop (1590-1664). The title suggests that the information in this handbook is an improvement on a previous apothecary's handbook, calling this a new light on the apothecary, alchemist and the art of distillation. The publication that this refers to is Dlicht d'Apothekers by Quiricus de Augustis. The title on the frontispiece does not match that on the title page, and this title was used for a new publication in 1683 that re-published all the recipes under the title 't Nieuw-Ligt des Apothekers (Amsterdam 1683). In the Pharmacia galenica & chymica the art of distillation is still described as an alchemists' secret. The final ca. 30 pages of the handbook describes confectionery distillation recipes instead of medicine. The engraved frontispiece shows the interior of an apothecary store and the two woodcut illustrations depict disstillery devices. In very good condition. Covers somewhat used. With bookplates of J.W.Six and Van der Hoeven on the pastedown. [Attributes: First Edition]

Vol. 1, 142 pp.; Vol. 2, 242 pp. First collected edition of mid-17th century emblem books with interpretations in multiple languages (polyglot), large folio format. The large Amsterdam printed 17th century "emblem" picture books were offered to wealthy patrons in a day when those who could read were the exception. These books, however, were designed to convey the stories from the Aesop, the Bible, and other works to all by artistic renderings: charming engraved scenes designed to illustrate the stories. The illustrations of Adriaen van der Venn (1589-1662) deal with highly diverse subject matter. There are many illustrations for allegorical epigrams. 1657. THE HAGUE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 17TH CENTURY 'HAGAE COMITIS celeberrimi totius EUROPAE municipij typus', kopergravure vervaardigd voor het stedenboek Theatrum urbium Celebriorum totius Belgii siver Germaniae Inferioris, deel II, dat door Johannes Janssonius in 1657/58 te Amsterdam werd uitgegeven. Vermoedelijk later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (prent): 38,4 x 46,1 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

Kirchneri, 1657. 1657 RARE Greek Polyglot Bible Montano Hebrew Greek Spanish Montanus HUGE FOLIOBenito Arias Montano was a 16th-century Spanish scholar who is best known for his polyglot edition of the New Testament. Also known as the Plantin Polyglot, this Bible first appeared in 1572 under the direction of Pope Gregory XIII. To combat the accusation, Montano published Greek and Hebrew text in 'word-for-word' translations on top of each other. This 1657 edition is the famed Hebrew and Greek translation, published in Leipzig by Kirchner. The second volume teaches drawing and planning in perspective, discussing perspective projections of geometrical bodies, perspective for theatrical scenes, perspective of lights and shadows, and finally also teaching mechanics for the lifting and moving of objects for use in the theatre. [Click Below for Full Description]

The text of the Quran is followed by a life of Mohammed, extracted from Ibn al-Amid's history of the Saracens and several other sources, translated from Erpenius's Latin rendering of the original Arabic. This edition was intended for Christians, who did not concern themselves with the Islamic restrictions on pictorial illustration. IDES, Evert Ysbrandts.
First and only edition in English of a travel account by the ambassador of the Czar of Muscovy to the court of the Emperor of China. Ambassador Ides (1657-1708) was a native of Holstein-Glückstadt and set up as a merchant in Moscow in 1687. In 1692 Ides was selected to lead a Russian embassy and trade mission to China. His account of this journey, first published in Dutch in 1704, is one of the "most detailed and accurate descriptions of inner Asia up to that time" (Lach & Van Kley). He gives rich descriptions of the landscape and inhabitants of Siberia and especially important is his information on Manchuria and Inner Mongolia, where the expanding Russian and Chinese empires bordered. As one of the first Europeans, Ides described the Gobi Desert.Combined with Ides's account of his travels is a description of the topography of China and of its inhabitants, supposedly written by a Catholic Chinese named Dionysius Kao. Ides had received a manuscript with this text from Kao and had later sent it to his Dutch friend Nicolaes Witsen (1641-1717), possibly together with a manuscript of his own account. According to a note by the original Dutch translator, Kao's text was written in "barbarous and unintelligible Latin, and somewhat better German" (p. 209). Most plates with repaired tears and waterstains, pages browned with some darker stains. Original binding heavily damaged but professionally restored. A fair copy of an important travel account.Cordier, Sinica, col. 2468; ESTC T55175; Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 1759-1767.

Sumatra - Johannes Janssonius, 1657
1657. FINE CHART OF SUMATRA AND THE SOUTHERN COASTS OF MALAYSIA. 'Sumatrae et Insularum Locorumque Nonnullorum Circumiacentium Tabula Nova.' Copper engraving published by Johannes Janssonius (Jan Jansson) of Amsterdam in 1657 as part of his Atlas Novus. With original hand colouring. Size: 49 x 58 cm. North is orientated to the left of the page. Singapore is probably identified just to the south of Ihor (Johor Bahru) as Senasur. As the map appeared in an atlas of sea charts, little interior detail is given but the coastlines, settlements and principal coastal features are identified. It is one of the earliest detailed depictions of Sumatra and remained the most important map of the region until well into the eighteenth century. A sailing ship and two cartouches embellish the chart: a title cartouche with three allegorical figures and a mileage scale with two surveying putti. In earlier times, Sumatra had been mistaken for the Island of Sri Lanka or Taprobana. The name Taprobana, had been applied to maps of Sumatra from the fifteenth century, after a misunderstanding by the Italian traveller Nicolo de Conti. De Conti dismissed the idea that Sri Lanka was Taprobana and so identified Sumatra as the mythical island described by geographers as Eratosthenes, Strabo, Pliny, Claudius Ptolemy and Cosmas. Richard Ligon (1585?–1662)
Printed for Humphrey Moseley, London, 1657. [10]+122+[3] pages with folding map, 9 plates and folding table. Quarto (11" x 7 1/4") bound in later 1/2 calf over marbled boards. (European Americana 657/94; Hough, Lesser Antilles 45; Sabin 41057, 105976n) First edition. Richard Ligon Richard Ligon (1585?–1662), a British author, lost his fortune as a royalist during the English Civil War (1642-1651), and during this turbulent time in England he found himself, as he notes in his narrative, a "stranger in my own country". On 14 June 1647, he left for Barbados to gain his fortune in the New World, like many of his fellow countrymen. Ligon purchased half of a sugar plantation in Barbados. After two years residence on the island he was attacked by a fever, and returned to England in 1650. He was soon afterward put into prison by his creditors. There are conflicting reports as to whether his narrative was conceived of in prison as a way to pay off his creditors and gain his freedom, or before his imprisonment at the urging of Brian Duppa, Bishop of Salisbury. Ligon spent 3 years in Barbados. This work describes sugar production and the island's natural history at length. It also contains the original source for the tale of Inkle and Yarico, in which an Englishman sells his Indian lover into slavery (pages 54-55). An opera based on the story was written in 1787, and has been revived several times in recent years. Includes the first detailed map of the island, with property owners indicated, and embellished with numerous vignettes of wild boars, armored soldiers, camel drivers, and mo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leiden: Elzevir, 1657. 12mo. [2], [22], 558, [2] pp. Engraved title by I. Hackius, errata leaf at end. 18th-century mottled calf, smooth spine gilt. Provenance: Lewis Stephen Pilcher (1845-1934), founding editor of 'The Annals of Surgery' (bookplate). Slight rubbing to binding / From the Collection of Allan B. Kirsner, M.D. Item #401894 "De Medicina is the oldest Western medical document after the Hippocratic writings. Written about 30 CE, it remains the greatest medical treatise from ancient Rome, and the first Western history of medicine. Celsus's superb literary style won him the title of Cicero medicorum. De medicina deals with diseases treated by diet and regimen and with those amenable to drugs and surgery. The surgical chapters contain the first accounts of the use of ligature, excellent descriptions of lateral lithotomy and hemiotomy, and the earliest discussion of the surgical remedies for mutilations - what we now call plastic surgery, including plastic operations for restoration of the nose, lips, eyelids, ears, etc. Celsus also included numerous important contributions to dentistry, including some of the earliest Western accounts of the treatment of toothache, oral surgery, tooth extraction, and fractures of the jaw" (Garrison-Morton-Norman, for the first edition of 1478). Joh. Jonstonus; John Jonston; Johannes Jonstonus; Jan Jonston
Amsterdam: Joannem Jacobi fil. Schipper, 1657 A fair copy of the extremely scarce Insectis section of Jan Jonston's famous work Historiae Naturalis. Jonston (1603-1675) studied botany and medicine and was a doctor. This copy is classed as 'fair' because it has been rebound in plain buckram binding without the title page, and the paper is very soft and lightly stained to the bottom outer corner margin. Contents are otherwise complete with 28 full page plates. The binding is clean and sound with gilt titles to spine. Contents: new endpapers; dedication 1p; Preface with plate list 3pp; Referenda ad pagninam 2pp with Plate I; text liber I pp 1-84; liber II 85-128; liber III 129-138; liber IV 139-147 with 27 further plates placed with relevant text; index 1p. Interestingly the final section includes starfish and seahorses. The contents are in very good clean condition apart from the paper damage mentioned above which has resulted in crumbling to the bottom corner of the dedication and preface leaf.
