london: as pictured. As pictured. Blows me away that was published 1657 and then someone wrote in in just a year before United States Independence, oh what did this book see???? Susanna Brown Penned in as show and 1775. I assume she crossed out the other name that looks like Benjamin, last name I can't make out. Also looks like some pencil written in same area, I make out what looks like David. Please, and this goes for all my antique books, if you are a dealer, I have no problem with you contacting me in regards to buying... That said, let me know you are a dealer, and if you are making an offer, how about an explanation for your offer. I buy and sell for a living, I don't mind dealers, but when I buy as a reseller, I am always upfront, and place a true researched value on the item and explain why I can only pay $. If you can do that, we can get along and both make some $.

Leiden: Elzevir, 1657. 12mo. [2], [22], 558, [2] pp. Engraved title by I. Hackius, errata leaf at end. 18th-century mottled calf, smooth spine gilt. Provenance: Lewis Stephen Pilcher (1845-1934), founding editor of 'The Annals of Surgery' (bookplate). Slight rubbing to binding / From the Collection of Allan B. Kirsner, M.D. Item #401894 "De Medicina is the oldest Western medical document after the Hippocratic writings. Written about 30 CE, it remains the greatest medical treatise from ancient Rome, and the first Western history of medicine. Celsus's superb literary style won him the title of Cicero medicorum. De medicina deals with diseases treated by diet and regimen and with those amenable to drugs and surgery. The surgical chapters contain the first accounts of the use of ligature, excellent descriptions of lateral lithotomy and hemiotomy, and the earliest discussion of the surgical remedies for mutilations - what we now call plastic surgery, including plastic operations for restoration of the nose, lips, eyelids, ears, etc. Celsus also included numerous important contributions to dentistry, including some of the earliest Western accounts of the treatment of toothache, oral surgery, tooth extraction, and fractures of the jaw" (Garrison-Morton-Norman, for the first edition of 1478). Johannes JANSSONIUS (1588-1664)
Opera molto rara." "City plan first included in the ""Theatrum praecipuarum urbium"", the famous city-plans book realized by Janssonius after Braun & Hogenberg's ""Civitates Orbis Terrarum"". The work was published in 1657, with 500 plates depicting cities from all over the world. In opposition to his main competitors, the Blaeus, to realize his project, Janssonius used the plates of former cartographers and publishers. In 1653 he bought from Abraham Hogenberg the plates of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Carlo CESI o CESIO (Antrodoco 1626 - Rieti 1687)
Duca di Parma etc. dipinta da Annibale Carracci intagliata da Carlo Cesio"", an album after the fresco ceiling in the Farnese Gallery by Annibale Carracci, published by François Collignon in 1657. A scene from Ovidio's Metamorphoses Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, thin margins, in very good condition." Bartsch XXI.110.33

(TECHNOLOGY). SCHOTT, GASPAR [KASPAR]
[Würzburg]: H. Pigrin for J. G. Schönwetter, 1657. FIRST EDITION. This is an important work in the history of physics, summarizing research done on hydraulic and pneumatic machines by Athanasius Kircher and his student and assistant, Gaspar Schott. A German Jesuit scientist, Schott (1608-66) became Kircher's assistant in Rome, where the scholar known as the last Renaissance man was assembling his Wunderkammer. Inspired by the curious crowds that came to see the various machines in this cabinet of wonders, Schott began writing this book, explaining the theories behind the mechanisms in the first part, and then describing and illustrating actual machines in the second. In addition to "wonders" from Kircher's workshop, Schott added descriptions of experiments and inventions he had seen or read about, including the first descriptions of Otto von Guericke's research into air pumps and atmospheric pressure, known as the "Magdebourg hemispheres." According to Norman, "Guericke had communicated the results of his experiments to Schott in 1657, but did not publish his own account until 1672." Robert Boyle read Schott's account of Guericke's work and began a correspondence with our author. Assisted by Robert Hooke, Boyle set to work improving on the device described by Schott, resulting in the "machina Boyleana" or "Pneumatical Engine" completed in 1659, which Boyle used to conduct experiments on the properties of air. Copies of this work do appear in the market with some regularity, but are often in regrettable condition; a fresh copy like the present one, with fine plate … [Click Below for Full Description]
