"CAMDEN, WILLIAM."
London: printed for Simon Waterson and Robert Clavell, 1657. London: printed for Simon Waterson and Robert Clavell. 1657. "Sixth edition, small 4to, pp. [6], 331 (i.e. 441), [1]; engraved frontispiece portrait of Camden (in a fine, unrestored state); engraved Hopetoun bookplate; contemporary full sheep, label perished (now in blind on spine); top of spine a little chipped, extremities a bit rubbed, clean tear midway in title page, but still a good, sound copy, or better. Edited by John Philipot (1589?-1645), the herald and antiquary. The anonymous co-editor ""W.D."" is possibly William Dugdale, the greatest historical researcher of his age. A seventh edition, which Lowndes terms ""the best"" followed in 1674, also with the initials W.D. as co-editor, but it appears to be a straight reprint of the present. & & Wing C-374a."

GOTTFRIED, Johann Ludwig [i.e. Johann Philipp ABELIN] (d. ca 1634).
Frankfurt: Mattheus Meria, 1657. Folio (12 1/2 x 8 inches). Letterpress title-page printed in red and black with wood engraved vignette and border. Additional engraved title-page, fine double-page double-hemisphere world map, one plan, 31 plates of medals, 4 folding plates, and 329 vignettes, extra-illustrated with a fine engraved portrait of Godfrey of Boulogne, King of Jerusalem by David (one or two spots). Contemporary vellum over paste-board, manuscript title on the spine (a bit rubbed, a few small stains). Provenance: One-page manuscript 20th-century bibliography of Merian tipped-in to paste-down. First published in 8 parts, and then as a collected work in 1642. A comprehensive collection of chronicles from the beginning of the world to the first decades of the 17th-century. With magnificent engravings by Matthias Merian, who was one of the most prominent members of the leading publishing family of 17th-century Germany. He was known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his series of travel books. Born and trained in Basel, Switzerland, Merian joined the Frankfurt publishing house of Johann Theodor de Bry in 1616 and, the following year, he married de Bry's daughter Maria Magdalena. Merian gained his greatest acclaim as head of the family publishing house following the death of his father-in-law in 1623. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing … [Click Below for Full Description]

JENNER, Thomas
c1657. Dimensions : 100 x 100 mm. Actual map (triangular) : 75 x 74 mm. Staining and worm track to the lower part of the text, although the engraved map very good with a good plate mark. Miniature map, first published in 1643. This edition is from " A Book of the Names of all Parishes," published with text. It is suggested that this series of maps were issued to be used by the two armies during the English Civil War, and possibly the hast that this was done, would account for the number of rather quaint mistakes in the engraving of the map; for instance St. Agnes and ( Zennor ) have been transposed in each others place, St. Ives is located just above St. Agnes, and Padstow is found in the position of Hayle. Also the name of St. Michael's Mount has been engraved backwards, suggesting the engraver was copying directly onto the copper plate. The first edition is distinguished from this edition by the lack of text printed beneath the actual engraved map. Wine]. [England, Parliament]
London: Printed by Henry Hills, and John Field, Printers to His Highness. 1657. 1st edition (Wing E-1046). Not in Gabler, nor Goldsmith. [2], 2 pp. Commonwealth seal to t.p. Folio: *2. 10-5/8" x 6-3/4". Printed self-wrappers. VG (split developing along fold). Now housed in archival mylar sleeve. Item #26937 Gabler, though not listing this item, does briefly discuss (& list) divers tracts & pamphlets written in the early 1640s voicing public outrage over a contract between Charles I and the Vintner's Company of London- under said contract the Vintners agreed to pay a 46 shilling tax on every ton of Spanish & French wine & also agreed to annually buy a certain amount from English importers. In return, the vintners were permitted to sell cooked victuals (a proviso *not* in their original charter) & allowed to recoup the tax by charging a penny a quart more that the officially published price. The ultimate effect was to give the Vintners' Company a monopoly on the wine trade, all the while enriching the coffers of Charles I. Needless to say, wine drinkers were livid. Parliament eventually responded in the consumers' favor. [Gabler, pp. 2-3]. This act of Cromwell's establishes limitations on prices for Spanish & French wines, a proclamation issued perhaps in memory of the Vintner's Company earlier attempts at profiteering?. Cambridge: ex officina Joann. Field; impensis Guglielmi Nealand 1657 - [4],56p. with a final leaf of errata. Shaved close at the top, touching the first word of the title and many of the headlines, otherwise in very good condition. Neatly disbound. Wing E3390. ESTC lists eleven copies, of which only two are in North America, CSmH, ViU. First edition. Isaac Barrow's second publication, and the second of his two epitomes of Euclid, each designed as an undergraduate text. He eventually became master of Trinity College, Cambridge, and as a mathematician was regarded by his contemporaries as second only to Isaac Newton. Newton has often been described as Barrow's pupil (e.g. in the DNB), but this appears not to have been the case; by 1669, however, there was some sort of working relationship between the two of which the details are not entirely clear. HOWELL, James (ca 1594-1666)
London: J. Streeter, 1657. 4to., (10 5/8 x 6 6/8 inches). Title-page printed in red and black. Catalogue of Mr. Howell's works at end. Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author leaning against an English oak by Abraham Bosso titled "Heictutus Obumbror" (mounted on slightly heavier contemporary stock), folding panoramic view of London by Wenceslaus Hollar (laid down on heavier contemporary stock, creased, small repair at fold, browning and spotting throughout). 19th-century calf gilt (covers detached). Provenance: Near contemporary ownership inscription on title-page dated 10th December 1661, and copious marginal annotations. First edition, the frontispiece portrait in Pforzheimer's fifth state. With a fine view of London before the Great Fire. James Howell was appointed Royal historiographer to Charles II in 1660 - the apex of a somewhat checkered career as a traveler, diplomat, linguist, writer, parliamentarian and spy. On the eve of the Civil War he was appointed Secretary of the Privy Council, a post he was never able to occupy, instead he was imprisoned in Fleet for eight years during the interregnum for his Royalist leanings. "Londinopolis" was written after his release and is mostly a condensed version of John Stow"s "Survey of London" published in 1598. Stow's book contained amusing anecdotes and descriptions but also detailed accounts of the buildings, social conditions and customs of London. Adams, "London Illustrated" 7; Pennington, "Hollar" 1012; Wing H3091..
