I: First French edition of the "General History of the World" ("Kitab al-Magmu' al-mubarak") by Girgis al-Makin ibn al-'Amid, known in the Latin tradition as Georgius Elmacinus. Born in Cairo in 602 AH (1205 AD) to a Coptic civil servant in the War Ministry, he later served in a similar function in Syria. His chronicle had previously been translated into Latin (by Erpenius) and English (by Purchas); the work "for the first time provided wider circles in the west with an overview of Islamic history from its beginnings to the Crusades and acquainted them with the prime of the Baghdad Califate, previously almost unreceived, through an account ultimately based on Tabari" (cf. Fück). - II/III: First French translation (issued in two parts) of this important critical, at times even satirical eyewitness account of the life of Tamerlane (Timur Lenk), the great Turkish conqueror of the 14th century. "A frequently malicious account, in spite of the panegyrical form in which it is couched" (cf. GAL). [VIEWS - NETHERLANDS - ZEELAND].
Cf. Donkersloot-de Vrij 776 note; Kluiver, De Cartons voor het Speculum Zelandiae, p. 5; NCC (2 copies of a different Ottens issue); STCN (1 copy of the Visscher ed.). Thirty-six splendid 17th-century views of cities, towns, noblemen's estates, and castles in the Dutch province of Zeeland, with an elaborately decorated armorial title-page. The cities shown include Middelburg, Vlissingen, Goes, Zierikzee, Tholen and Veere. The title appears in an elaborate cartouche with the arms of Zeeland and of these 6 cities, with allegorical figures and a view of a city and ships. One of the 3 views of Middelburg, not in other issues of the Speculum, is printed from Roman's first plate of the city from the harbour side, replaced by the better known one (also present) between 1657 and 1660.In very good condition, with only minor marginal repairs in the title and one view, a tiny hole in one view, and an occasional minor fold, crease or faint stain. A splendid set of Zeeland views, including the rare earlier view of Middelburg from the harbour side.

B. [= BOLS?], J.K.
Forbes, Short history of the art of distillation 82 & p. 13; STCN (2 copies, including 1 incompl.). Rare second corrected and enlarged edition of an early handbook on distillation. In twenty chapters it describes a wide array of applications and techniques, from oil distillation to the production of brandy and Dutch gin. It includes a description of the fermentation of fruit, the technical jargon and information about distilling equipment. Forbes indicates that the author is not the same person as Jacob Bols, as has sometimes been supposed, but whether he is a relative or was not a Bols at all, we do not know. The art of distilling had long been discussed as an alchemists' secret, as part of the apothecary's trade (as in the 1657 Pharmacia galenica & chymica) and later as a scientific pursuit, but practitioners of the commercial distiller's trade generally passed on their knowledge by training apprentices rather than publishing practical handbooks. The present handbook and Pieter van Keulen's similar one of 1696 are among the few examples known. In very good condition and wholly untrimmed. Binding rubbed and chafed. A detailed early practical handbook of distillation, written by an experienced practitioner.

Johannes Janssonius
1657. Altkolorierter Kupferstich, Blatt: 59 x 49 cm, Darstellung: 49 x 36,5 cm. Altkolorierte Vogelschauansicht zeigt Breslau, unten Legende in zwei Kartuschen oben zwei Wappen. Janssonius kopierte die Ansicht nach Braun und Hogenberg aus dem späten 16. Jahrhundert. Die Ansichten von Janssoius sind seltener als Braun-Hogenberg. Kaum fleckig, hinterlegter Riss untenim Rand, insgesamt gut erhalten. Schönes Exemplar mit dekorativem Kolorit. Originally coloured bird's eye view of Wroclaw in Poland from 'The Town Book' by Janssonius. Janssonius copied most of the views for this work after Braun and Hogenberg from the lat 16th cnetury, but Janssonius maps are much more rare. List in the two cartouches below shows 91 most important buildings. Margins slighty stained, repaired tear in the white margin below, otherwise in a good condion. Good impression with highly decorative colouring.

BRAUN, Georg & HOGENBERG, Frans.
Amsterdam, Johannes Jansson, 1657. Coloured. 340 x 485mm. A 'map-view' of Paris, with the major buildings shown in profile, with little consideration for perspective. Originally published in the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first series of printed townplans by Braun & Hogenberg in 1572, this example comes from the uncommon 'Townbooks' published by Jansson. There has been no attempt to update the 85-year-old plan, but the three figures dressed in contemporary costume have been removed from the bottom left foreground. KOEMAN: Ja 14.
