Johannes JANSSONIUS (1588 - 1664)
1657. EDIZIONE DE WIT.

A rare plan of Siena engraved by Wenzel Hollar, first included in the "Theatrum celebrorium" by Janssonius. This example comes from the "Thesaurus Antiquatatum.." by Vander Aa, published in Leyden between 1704 and 1723. Leida Leyden E. Johannes JANSSONIUS (1588 - 1664)
Rara. Dimensioni 420x345. Bibliografia: Pisa, Iconografia a stampa pp. 126 - 128, 28; Pisa e il suo territorio pp. 39 - 40, 26 City plan taken from "Theatrum praecipuarum urbium", the famous city - plans book realized by Janssonius after Braun & Hogenberg's "Civitates Orbis Terrarum". The work was published in 1657, with 500 plates depicting cities from all over the world. In opposition to his main competitors, the Blaeus, to realize his project, Janssonius used the plates of former cartographers and publishers. In 1653 he bought from Abraham Hogenberg the plates of the "Civitates orbis Terrarum" which have been then included in his work. As far as Dutch cities, he had new plates realized after Johannes Blaeu's Atlas, published in 1649. The plates in the Fifth Volume, the one about Italy entitled "Theatrum celebriorum urbium Italiae..", Janssonius used the plates realized by Jodocus Hondius for his "Italia Hodierna.." in 1627. Unlike Hondius' work, Janssonius' is an in - folio size, with text both on recto and on verso. Copperplates. Very rare. Amsterd … [Click Below for Full Description]

This compendious encyclopedic work by the Greek - speaking Egyptian Athenaeus portrays a Roman dinner party attended by the brightest deepest and most learned thinkers of the early Third Century. The banquet lasts several days in order to allow conversation to take its course. Topics range lightly over law medicine and literature but the real subject at hand is food in all its aspects. HALL, JOHN
London: Printed for John Sherley, 1657. FIRST EDITION n. This collection of case histories and remedies by a Stratford physician is of interest for its insights into 17th century medicine and for its connection to William Shakespeare. John Hall (ca. 1574-1635) was the only physician in Stratford-on-Avon, and he treated patients within a 20-mile radius of his home, and from as far away as Worcester. He recorded case histories in Latin, making note of the disease and symptoms, and of the successful method of treatment. Norman notes that "Hall had an excellent reputation as a physician, and the single extant volume of his medical diary (now in the British Library) records the wide range of diseases he was called upon to treat and the remedies he concocted for them." Although the modern reader will find some of these "cures" alarming, Hall was ahead of his time in his restrained use of bleeding and in his treatment of scurvy. Hall had married Shakespeare's daughter Susanna, the "Mrs. Hall of Stratford" whose bout with colic is recounted here on p. 24. After his death, she sold a couple of volumes of his medical diary to James Cooke, who had served as a surgeon in the English Civil War. Cooke translated the Latin into English and published the present work in 1657. At the beginning of this volume, our early owner, Dr. John Pither, noted the date of his birth (1679), his marriage (1731), and his 63rd birthday (1742), and he also made marginal notes about remedies he concocted. The number of ownership signatures here indicates the work's value as a medical reference during multipl … [Click Below for Full Description]

[PASCAL, BLAISE]. "LOUIS DE MONTALTE," Pseudonym
London: Printed by J. G. for R. Royston, 1657. First Edition in English y. Called by PMM "a noble defense of religious faith," this is the initial printing in English of Pascal's denunciaiton of the Jesuit order, in a lovely 19th century French binding. Pascal (1623-62) was a man of many attainments in several fields, among them physics, philosophy, and mathematics (he is said to have invented the first cash register and the first horse-drawn omnibuses of Paris). Above all, he was a profound thinker, a devout Christian, and a writer whose work was always characterized by purity and precision. In his early twenties, he embraced the Jansenist cause, and when the leading French Jansenist Arnaud was accused by the Jesuits of harboring heretical views, Pascal produced the present work, written in the form of a series of 18 letters that attempt to prove the orthodoxy of the Jansenist position on divine grace, and that castigate the Jesuits for a flexible casuistry that sacrifices moral uprightness for the pursuit of power. Written simply, lucidly, and objectively, the work was enormously successful and dealt the Jesuits a serious setback. PMM observes, " Pascal's weapon was irony, and the freshness with which the gravity of the subject contrasts with the lightness of manner is an enduring triumph." Not surprisingly, the book was put on the Index and ordered to be burned. The English translator, writing during the period of Cromwell's rule, reveals himself in the preface as fanatically opposed to the Jesuit order. He gives the author of the letters the name of Louis de Montalte, b … [Click Below for Full Description]
