Cf. CELSUS, Aulus Aurelius Cornelius (circa 25 BCE - circa 50)
Leiden: Elzevir, 1657. 12mo. [2], [22], 558, [2] pp. Engraved title by I. Hackius, errata leaf at end. 18th-century mottled calf, smooth spine gilt. Provenance: Lewis Stephen Pilcher (1845-1934), founding editor of 'The Annals of Surgery' (bookplate). "De Medicina is the oldest Western medical document after the Hippocratic writings. Written about 30 CE, it remains the greatest medical treatise from ancient Rome, and the first Western history of medicine. Celsus's superb literary style won him the title of Cicero medicorum. De medicina deals with diseases treated by diet and regimen and with those amenable to drugs and surgery. The surgical chapters contain the first accounts of the use of ligature, excellent descriptions of lateral lithotomy and hemiotomy, and the earliest discussion of the surgical remedies for mutilations - what we now call plastic surgery, including plastic operations for restoration of the nose, lips, eyelids, ears, etc. Celsus also included numerous important contributions to dentistry, including some of the earliest Western accounts of the treatment of toothache, oral surgery, tooth extraction, and fractures of the jaw" (Garrison-Morton-Norman, for the first edition of 1478). Willems 797. Slight rubbing to binding / From the Collection of Allan B. Kirsner, M.D. [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]

Francis Vere
Cambridge-W Dillingham, 1657 Book. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce first edition of the travels and life of Sir Francis Vere. This biographical volume documents his travels as a soldier as well as providing informative insight into the politics and history of 17th century Britain. Francis Vere (1560-1609) was one of the great Elizabethan English commander, renowned for his military prowess in the Low Countries. In 1585, he first went into active service and was quickly caught upin the war in the Low Countries. The Dutch War of Independence raged from 1568-1648, and originated from a revolt of the Seventeen Provinces against Philip II of Spain's religious and political dominance. It was eventually won by the Northern Provinces, under the leadership of William the Silent. In 1581, the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands was formed. After a 12 year truce, war broke out again, coinciding with the Thirty Years War. In 1648, a final peace was reached with the Peace of Munster Treaty. Collation; lacking frontispiece, two portraitsand all maps. Condition: In a paper board binding. Externally, rebound and smart. Very light bumping to extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Frontispiece of Sir Horace Vere missing as well as two other portraits. Maps of Cadez, Tumholt, Ostende, Low Countries and Vere's Tomb at Winchester also missing. Pages generally bright with occasional spotting throughout. Significant age-toning and some tidemarking. Overall: GOOD. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
