DERHAM, William
William Derham, F.R.S. (1657-1734) was the first man adequately to measure the speed of sound. These Boyle Lectures of his, first published in 1713, contain versions of the Argument to Design that were influential on Paley. 'Derham's Physico-Theology is more 'physico' than 'theology'. His method is to present in immense detail all aspects of the world and its workings (plants, animals, man, wind air, light, the organs of men and animals, etc.) as a way of revealing the power and wisdom of God' (John Yolton in The Dictionary of Seventeenth-Century British Philosophers). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 8vo, xv, xvi, 444, [12] pp., contemporary panelled calf, rubbed at edges, slight loss to spine head and wear to two corners, small round Selbourne Library stamp on title-page verso, generally a clean and well-preserved copy.
Cioranescu, XVII, 17 412. SHF, Bourgeois & André, 1037. Inconnu à Lachèvre. Bel exemplaire relié par Capé. J. C. (John Cleveland)
London: NP, 1657. Later edition. Hardcover. g+ to vg. 24mo (5 3/4 x 3 3/4"). [6], 107, [1]pp (Poems); [2], 12pp (A Character of a Diurnal-Maker). 19th century 3/4 olive morocco over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering to spine. Raised bands. Engraved frontispiece portrait of John Cleveland. Decorative head-, tailpiece, and initial. 13th edition of Cleveland's "Poems," bound with "A Character of Diurnal-Maker," both having separate title pages. English satirist, elegist, and poet, John Cleveland (1613-1658) is recognized as one of the most popular satirists and poets of the 17th century. With over twenty-five editions of his poems appearing between 1647 and 1687, he was respected as a lyrical genius and a valuable asset to the Royalist party during the English civil wars. His work has provided a detailed examination of the history and politics of the mid-1600s through his caustic satire, somewhat biased by his allegiance to the king. Cleveland is also acknowledged as one of the last metaphysical poets, often utilizing the technique of extended metaphor. Spine and upper front joint age-toned. Previous owner's name in ink at upper margin of front free endpaper (Leland N. Carlson). Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition.

Incisione in rame, meravigliosa coloritura coeva, leggere ossidazioni. City plan, from the Theatrum praecipuarum urbium by Janssonius. This collection conceived by Janssonius contains 500 plates depicting cities from all over the world and drives its inspiration from Braun & Hogenberg's prototype. Cf.
