HARRINGTON James
1656. First edition. Small folio (265 x 185mm). [12], 239, [1, blank], 255-286, 189-210, [1], [1 blank] pp. Bound circa 1740 in half calf, comb-marbled boards, spine tooled in gilt on a dark-stained background. Housed in a modern cloth slipcase. London, Printed by J. Streater, for Livewell Chapman. A staunch Republican, Harrington?s Oceana described ?a Utopian State with a written constitution, providing for a bicameral legislature, rotation in office, the indirect election of a president, secret ballot, and other ideas much in advance of their time, some of which influenced the framers of the U.S. Constitution? (Walker, Oxford Companion to Law, p. 555). ?Oceana is one of those works that transcend their immediate context. The book?s historical significance is that it marks a moment of paradigmatic breakthrough, a major revision of English political theory and history in the light of concepts drawn from civic humanism and Machiavellian Republicanism? (Pocock, Machiavellian Moment, p. 384). ?Other than the Utopia [of Thomas More], this is perhaps the most famous attempt at envisioning a model commonwealth. It has been consulted at various times by those who have planned new states and commonwealths? (Pforzheimer). Written between 1654 and 1656, the publication of Oceana was hindered by political obstruction, with the type set by three different printers to avoid seizure, the work was published with two variant title-pages, one having the imprint ?printed by J. Streater for Livewell Chapman?, the other ?printed for D. Pakeman? The Pakeman imprint is considered to be scarcer. … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

YAMAGA, Soko
1656. Many fine brush & color and black & white paintings in the text. Two illus. with movable flaps (one is a volvelle). Finely written in a superb calligraphic hand on mica-coated (kirabiki) textured paper. 31; 34; 36; 35; 35; 30; 45; 33 leaves (not including blanks). Eight vols. 8vo (252 x 180 mm.), orig. dark blue wrappers bound in tetsuyoso style, each cover finely illustrated by hand in gold with depictions of landscapes with plants. [Japan]: Preface dated 1656; this manuscript was written sometime afterwards, probably in the 17th century. Yamaga (1622-85), military strategist and Confucian philosopher, set forth the first systematic exposition of the missions and obligations of the samurai (warrior) class. These included martial spirit, weaponry skills, loyalty to one's lord, a sense of personal honor, devotion to duty, and a willingness to sacrifice one's own life. His teachings became the central core of what later became known as Bushido (Code of Warriors), which guided Japan's military class throughout the Tokugawa period and to the end of World War II. Yamaga made many important innovations in military strategy and tactics, weapons, and military intelligence. He served as military instructor to the lord of the fiefdom of Ako and founded a military school. While the original manuscript of "Bukyo Zensho," written in 1656, does not exist, copies were made for the disciples of "Yamaga ryu," Yamaga's military school. These same disciples gathered Yamaga's teachings - "Bukyo Shogaku" - on obligations and rules of behavior (Bushido) for samurai, which … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

GALILEO, Galilei
Bologna: Per gli hh. del Dozza, 1656. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "I have never met a man so ignorant that I couldn't learn something from him." ― Galileo Galilei Few names are as synonymous with astronomy as Galileo. Known for his astronomical discoveries and physics studies, Galileo is unquestionably one of the most important scientists to ever live. He published a number of landmark books including 'Discourse on the Floating Bodies'. This work was highly influential in the developmental studies of hydrostatics and buoyancy. In 1655, Bolognese publisher Dozza printed the complete works of Galileo including ''Floating Bodies'. Other works in this book include Galileo's astronomical discoveries of the Sun's rotation, sun spots, phases of Venus, physics experiments and philosophical doctrines, as well as defense of Archimedes' theories. Each work was published with its own title page, so it is not uncommon to find these works individually. This second edition includes impressive woodcut illustrations throughout the following complete four works: · 'Discorso...Intorno alle cose stanno su l' Acqua, o che in quella si muouono' (Floating Bodies) · 'Discorso Apologetico di Lodovico delle Colombe...' (A defense of the philosophy of Lodovico delle Colombe) · 'Considerationi di M. Vincentio di gratio sopra il discorso intorno alle cose che stanno sù l'acqua, e che in quella si muouono' (Survey of the ripple effects of water) · 'Risposta alle oppositioni' (Response to oppositions).

Daniel King, etc.
United Kingdom: Daniel King, 1656. The Vale-Royal of England or, The County Palatine of Chester Illustrated. Wherein is contained a Geographical and Historical Description of that Famous County, with all its Hundreds and Seats of the Nobility, Gentry and Freeholders From 1656, the history and antiquities of the county of Chester in northwestern England, edited and introduced by Daniel King, with material by William Smith, William Webb, and Samuel Lee. Illustrations are by King and Wenceslaus Hollar. This text features a double-page map of the county, three textual illustrations, and two plates. Other copies of this book also include eleven plates with illustrations of coats of arms, but these seem never to have been included in this copy. One of the plate illustrations in this copy, a handsome depiction of the court of Hugh Lupus, Earle of Chester, does not appear in any other copy that I've located online. Also, interestingly, two original errata slips remain present. Additionally, at the end of this volume is A Short Treatise on the Isle of Man by James Chaloner, who was to become governor of the island. This 29-page treatise is illustrated with a coat of arms plate and a double-page map. Condition: The book was rebound in the early 1800s with new endpapers, flyleaves, and title page; the original title page is missing, so that the 1656 text opens on the dedication page. This page shows signs of repair. The covers have wear and some water damage, as seen in the photos; the water staining has almost no effect on the text. There are ownership marks on the front endpaper, da … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

GALILEO, Galilei
Bologna: Per gli hh. del Dozza, 1656. 1655 4 Works of Galileo Astronomy Floating Bodies Hydrostatic Physics Science "I have never met a man so ignorant that I couldn't learn something from him." ― Galileo Galilei Few names are as synonymous with astronomy as Galileo. This second edition includes impressive woodcut illustrations throughout the following complete four works:· 'Discorso...Intorno alle cose stanno su l' Acqua, o che in quella si muouono' (Floating Bodies)· 'Discorso Apologetico di Lodovico delle Colombe...' (A defense of the philosophy of Lodovico delle Colombe)· 'Considerationi di M. London: John Crook, 1656. 8vo (156 x 106 mm). [24], 151, [9] pages. Title printed in red and black, complete with errata leaf and initial and final blanks. Contemporary English blind-ruled calf, printer's waste endpapers; cloth clamshell case. Provenance: Robert Davies (early signature on title); with Bernard Quaritch (collation note on rear pastedown). FIRST EDITION, in a contemporary binding, of this selection of Saint Patrick's works, edited by the Anglo-Irish historian James Ware (1594-1666). An important text, containing the editiones principes of St. Patrick's 'Confessio' and 'Epistola,' based on the 'Book of Armagh' and the manuscripts from the British Library (Cotton Nero E.1) and the Salisbury Cathedral Library.
