Poems: Viz. I. Miscellanies. II. The Mistress, or, Love Verses, III. Pindarique Odes. And IvV. Davideis, or a Sacredm Poem of the Troubles of David

London: Printed for Humphrey Moseley, 1656. First Collected Edition. Folio. [22], 41, [1], 80, [4], 58, 61-70, 71, 70-154, 23pp, [1]. Contemporary blind-ruled sheep, with gilt 'Ford-Ward' super-libros of William Douglas, Duke of Queensberry (1637-1695) to centre of each board, preserved in modern calf-backed solander box. An honest but worn copy, with early repair to patch of loss to upper board. Loss to corners, spine. Endpapers and final leaves browned and chipped to extremities. Occasional light soiling to text. Llll4 torn, touching text but without loss. 'London, 24 Mrch - 56, £00-08-00' penned to FFEP in a seveteenth-century hand, with a slightly later shelf-mark penned to verso. Abraham Cowley (1618-1667), English poet and royalist agent. Acheiving remarkable poetic success in his youth, Cowley's life was somewhat interrupted by the tumultuous 1640s. An awoved royalist, following his eviction from Trinity College, Cambridge, he pinned his fortunes to the King's cause. Following the court to Paris after defeat at Marston Moor, Cowley served as a secretary and agent to Queen Henrietta Maria's court-in-exile from 1644-54, a position terminated only by his arrest during a mission to England. This first collected edition of Cowley's poetry, arranged following his release from Cromwell's custody, contains his Mistress, Pindarique Odes and the epic life of King David, Davideis in addition to an extensive selection of miscellaneous early poems. The life of William Douglas, first Duke of Queensberry (1637-1695), was similarly interrupted by seventeenth-century events. The eldest son of a royalist Scottish nobleman, James Douglas, second Earl of Queensberry, his education was curtailed by the Cromwellian interregnum. Nevertheless, upon the Restoration of the Stuart Monarchy his political career blossomed; from local excise commissioner in 1661, Douglas rose to a position within the Scottish privy council by 1667. He was appointed Justice-General of Scotland (1680), constable and governor of Edinburgh Castle (1682) and most notably high treasurer of Scotland (1682). Greatly esteemed by Charles II for his ability to muster funds and confound Covenanters, Royal favour weakened under James VII and II due to his unwavering support of the established religion, and by 1686 his positions and powers were thoroughly eroded. Pforzheimer, 233. Wing C6683.

In 1654, after a period of discouragement and repeated meditations, he underwent a mystical experience which effected his definite conversion to a religious life . He now, in 1655, took up his residence in Port Royal . Attacks by the Jesuits on the Jansenist cause and on Antoine Arnauld led to the publication in 1656-7 of eighteen Lettres de Louis de Montalte à un Provincial de ses amis et aux RR. PP. Jesuites sur la morale et la politique de ces peres; they were composed by Pascal and are known as his Lettres provinciales. They deal with two subjects: divine grace, and the ethical code of the Jesuits . Against the relaxed morality which the Jesuits were said to teach, he makes a vigorous appeal to public opinion by means of quotations from Jesuit works and by dialogues in which Jesuits are made, by their admissions, to cast discredit on themselves. The Lettres provinciales, written with polite irony and the utmost simplicity, lucidity, and objectivity, were an enormous success and dealt the Jesuits a blow from which they never recovered.         The History of This Iron Age

London - E. Tyler, 1656 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. An extremely scarce seventeenth century work from a French historian, here translated into English, analysing thestate of chaos andmoral disorder that the world has fallen into during the last hundred or soyears of history. First edition. 'Wherein is set down the true state of Europe, as it was in the year 1500. Also the original and causes of all the warres and commotions that have happened, together with a description of the most memorable battels, sieges, actions and transactions, both in court and camp, from that time till this present year 1656. Illustrated with the lively effigies of the most renowned persons of this present time'. The writer refers to his own age as 'this iron age', having a particular view that 'this abominable age, whereof the scripture so clearly speaks: This is the Kingdome of Iron, which shivers and subdues all things. The seven angels have powred down their vials upon the earth, which is filled with blasphemy, massacres, injustices, disloyalties and infinite other evills, almost able to draw even the very elect to murmuration'. Two parts bound into one. With decorative head and tail pieces and capitals. Written originally by J. Parival, and now rendred into English by B. Harris, Gent. With a dedication from Bartholomew Harris to John Russel, Esquire. Jean-Nicolas de Parival, born in Verdun (Meuse) in 1605, died in Leiden in 1669, was a French historian and writer. He wrote 'Short History of the Iron Age' in 1656. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally worn, the front board present but detached, and the rear significantly cracked and delicate: it could detach in the post. Internally, generally firmly bound although pages 9-16 are working loose andsomewhattender towards the rear where the joint is weak. Remarkably bright and clean for the age of this book, though slightly dusted. Small tidemarks to the margins of the first and last few pages and just the odd spot. Small instances of worming to the gutter, not affecting the text. Ink signature to the title. Regrettably all of the plates are missing. Quite an incredible book all the same. Overall: FAIR..

The Temple. Sacred Poems, And private Ejaculations. By Mr. George Herbert, late Oratour of the University of Cambridge. The seventh Edition, with an Alphabeticall Table for ready finding out chief places.

Printed by T.R. for Philemon Stephens, 1656 Printed: 1647. 1597-1663 Duodecimo, 5.5 x 3.2 inches. Seventh edition. [*]6, A-I12, K6; A-B12, C8. This copy is a little stained on the first and last few leaves, bound in nineteenth century quarter calf. By far the most important labor of these closing years was the completion, revision, and arrangement for the 164 poems (in some 140 different stanzaic patterns) that in 1633 were published as 'The Temple.' Herbert's final disposition of these famous lyrics, as Walton tells the story, was itself a votive gesture. Although long plagued by failing health, he himself had made no plans for publication. At last, as he lay dying he handed them to Edmund Duncon, an associate of Ferrar's at Little Gidding. 'Sir,' he told his visitor, 'I pray deliver this little book to my dear brother Ferrar, and tell him he shall find in it a picture of the many spiritual conflicts that have passed betwixt God and my soul before I could subject mine to the will of Jesus my Master, in whose service I have now found perfect freedom. Desire him to read it; and then, if he can think it may turn to the advantage of any dejected poor soul, let it be made public, if not, let him burn it, for I and it are less than the least of God's mercies.' A few weeks later (1 March 1633) he was dead at thirty-nine." (Baker)

London: Printed for Gabriel Bedle, and Thomas Collins, 1656.. [16],185,[7]pp., with pp. 81-96 omitted from pagination, as usual. Small octavo. Modern three quarter calf and boards. Engraved frontis by W. Hollar after Mary Evelyn. Early ink ownership inscription on top edge of verso of frontis, a few slightly later ink notes on blank verso of last advert leaf, a couple of early ink marginal highlights, imprint at base of frontis cut into when originally bound, with platemark shaved at fore-edge (as often), otherwise about very good. First edition of this early work by Evelyn, ushered into public view by prefatory verses by Edmund Waller and Evelyn's father-in-law Sir Richard Browne, as well as a letter by Richard Fanshawe. Evelyn's translation precedes his essay, and is printed in parallel with the Latin text. Keynes recounts how the considerable number of printer's errors vexed Evelyn no end, and played a part in his electing not to publish the manuscript of his translation of the five remaining books.         Le Canada, ou Nouvelle France, &c

Paris: Chez Pierre Mariette Rue S. Jacque, 1656. Copper-engraved map, period hand colouring in outline. 17 x 22 3/8 inches. A lovely example of one of the most important and influential maps of Canada ever devised. This very rare map is the most geographically progressive portrayal of Canada made during the mid-17th century, and was not superseded until Guillaume De L'Isle's 1703 map. While it bases many of its features on Sanson's watershed map of the continent, Amerique Septentrionale (1650), it is more advanced than it in key respects. Importantly, it is the first map to depict "L. Erie ou Du Chat" in a recognizable form. This designation was derived from Jean Boisseau, who in 1643 named the body of water after the local native name "Derie," which referred to the panther like qualities of their warriors. Sanson benefited from having received a copy of The Jesuit Relations, published in Paris in 1649, a detailed account by French missionaries who had traveled in the region. Most notably, this included Father Paul Ragueneau's account of his visit to Niagara Falls and Jean Nicollet's discovery of Lake Michigan, "Lac des Puans," in 1634. Down the St. Lawrence River from the lakes, Montréal is named, the settlement having been founded by the Sieur de Maisonneuve in 1642. Elsewhere, to the north, a mysterious strait weaves over "New South Wales" on Hudson's Bay, terminating in the interior of the continent, a blank space labeled as "Mer Glaciale". This alludes to the existence of a much hoped-for Northwest Passage. Also, on the western shore of the same sea is "Nouveau Danemarcq," referring to the voyage that Danish explorer Jan Munk made to the region in 1619-20. With regards to the east coast of America, Sanson greatly improved upon his earlier work, as Long Island is correctly delineated and "N[ouvelle] Amsterdam" (present day New York) is correctly positioned. "N[ouvelle] Suede," appears at the mouth of the Delaware River, referring to the former Swedish colony centered on Fort Christina, founded on the site of present-day Wilmington, Delaware in 1638. Nicholas Sanson was born in the town of Abbeville in Picardy. Something of a child prodigy, by the age of eighteen, he could already be found in Paris drafting his own maps. There he quickly rose to become Royal Geographer to Louis XIII in 1630. He maintained the position upon the ascension of the "Sun King" Louis XIV in 1643, and later served as tutor to the ambitious young monarch. In 1644, he formed a lucrative partnership with Paris publisher Pierre Mariette with the objective of producing a great atlas that could rival those of the Amsterdam houses, such as Blaeu and Jansson. The present map was devised as one of the most important maps in the atlas. The atlas itself, entitled Les Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde was not finally assembled until 1658. It was however, a landmark moment in the history of French cartography, being the first folio atlas produced in that country. The extremely high quality of Sanson's work motivated other French mapmakers to improve the standard of their production. Sanson also greatly influenced Louis XIV's chief minister, Jean-Baptiste Colbert to heavily fund cartographic projects. This gave rise to a great 'French School' of cartography that was to eventually wrest dominance of the mapmaking market from the Dutch by the 1680s. After Sanson's death in 1667, his work was continued by his sons, Guillaume (d.1703) and Adrian (d.1708). This map was first issued separately in 1656, and also appeared in an unaltered state in various editions of the first modern French atlas, Sanson's Les Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde, produced from 1658 to 1676.

A Rouen, Jacques Cailloue, 1656. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Tabula Itineraria ex illustri Peutingerorum bibliotheca quae Augustae Vindelicorum beneficio Marci Velseri...in lucem edita

Acquaforte, 1656 circa. Etching, 1656 approx. Good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper sheets 4, 8 and cut segments together, some folds of paper, otherwise in good condition. The Tabula Peutingeriana is a map representing the known world in ancient times, while everything else up to the mouth of the Ganges is drawn on a strip of parchment m long 6.83 m wide and 0.34. The design is therefore somewhat distorted, since the line north-south rather than the small west-east. Remarkable is the inclination of Italy, as elsewhere, to the east. But the paper is intended as a summary of the major roads of the Roman Empire, and the stations located along them as the distances separating them. Cities are marked by small houses and towers, while the most important Torrite walls. Rome, Constantinople and Antioch are distinguished by a circle in the middle that leads to a figure which Rome is crowned. The map got its name from its former owner Konrad Peutinger of Augsburg, who had received the humanist Konrad Celtes of Vienna in 1507. It is believed that the Tabula Peutingeriana is another copy of the oldest, which already missing the first segment, which should bring up the western part of Spain, the survivors are eleven segments. Who is the author and in what period the paper is drawn is uncertain. Scholars are still of the opinion that the original is to be located in Imperial, between the fourth and second centuries after Christ. It seems of great significance for the chronology of the fact that they are listed on the Tabula Peutingeriana pagan temples and Christian alike.Important itineraria edition of the famous map of the Roman world, the first document known to us in a long sequence depicting the empire, its streets, cities, compressing and distorting the geographical reality to be able to represent all of the original roll.         AN ESSAY ON THE FIRST BOOK OF T. LUCRETIUS CARUS DE RERUM NATURA. INTERPRETED AND MADE ENGLISH VERSE BY

London: Printed for Gabriel Bedle and Thomas Collins 1656. Leyde: Johann Maire, 1656. relié. petit in 4.

Dicatus; idibus Decembris MDCLV. Joanne Gilenio I. V. Lto consiliario Palatino-Simmerano, & praefecto Lutrensi. Utan ort, 1656. 8:o. (8),+ 214 s.

Historia Ludicra. Opus ex omni disciplinarum genere, selecta & jucunda eruditione refertum

Bruxelles: Johannis Mommartius, 1656 A good copy of the second edition of this extremely rare work. First printed in Venice in 1652. Baldassare Bonifacio was a professor among many other talents and this work is a cabinet of curiosities - gathering a wide range of stories and recollections - including tales from classical antiquity of women who had serpent lovers. In full leather binding with raised bands and gilt decoration to the spine and tooling to the boards. It has had an old leather repair relaying the tooled front board onto plain leather. It is clean, showing wear to top and bottom of spine and edges and with a broken front hinge and weak rear hinge, although the board is still attached. The contents are in superb condition given the age of the book. There is a biographical note written in ink in english on a preliminary and 2-3 signs of previous ownershiip. Some of the ink has run a little. With black and white illustrated title page; page of names - D Carolo Hovyne, Equiti Aurato; dedication from Joannes Mommartius; section about Bonifacio; chapter index; 591 pages of text; final page with motif of mythical beasts; 'Index Rerum, ,approbatio by P de Roeck; and engraved picture at the end headed 'Post tenebras spero lucem'.The pages are slightly browned and there is the odd brown spot but it is otherwise clean and sound. It is an unusual size - 23 cm high by 18.5 cm broad.

        Augusti biss an den 5.

Octobris gewehret, eingeworffen worden, und was dabey sich denckwürdig zugetragen. (Riga), Gerhard Schrödern, 1656. 4:o. (12) s.
