COMARUM [then, in Greek:] AKOSMIA. THE LOATHSOMNESSE OF LONG HAIRE. WITH AN APPENDIX AGAINST PAINTING, SPOTS, NAKED BREASTS, &C

Printed by J. G. for Nathanael Webb and William Grantham, London 1654 - Diatribe against Over-long Locks and Cosmetics, with Warnings of Bleeding Hair and Bodily Afflictions. 152 x 95 mm (6 x 3 3/4"). 4 p.l., 125 pp. FIRST EDITION. Recent unadorned polished calf in the style of the period, raised bands. Front pastedown with engraved armorial bookplate of Edward Astle, Esq. (see below). Wing H-429; McAlpin III, 72; Thomason E. 1489(3). Leaves somewhat browned, especially at edges (perhaps from fire?), occasional minor spots of foxing or rust, two pages with one-inch ink blot (one of these partially obscuring a sidenote), one sidenote just grazed by the binder, but still a very good copy of a book expected to be found in poor shape, with nothing approaching a fatal defect. With warnings of acute consequences for libertine expressions of both sexes, this is first and foremost a puritanical diatribe against the fashion for long hair among men, backed by scriptural arguments and the 17th century version of urban legends. Described by DNB as "a man who fought all his life against popular revels and pastimes," Thomas Hall (1610-65) warns here of a dire disease in which matted "snakes" of long hair become infested with vermin and bleed when pricked with a needle. Not lacking in imagination, Hall claims that sufferers in Poland who cut off the offending hair "lost their eyes" or had some other body part grievously afflicted. His aversion to long hair on men is extreme: he mentions approvingly his fellow Puritan William Prynne's attack on "love-locks," but fears Prynne does not go far enough in condemning the scourge of hirsuteness. After 95 pages of lecturing men on their hairstyles, Hall turns his attention to the fashion crimes of women. Make-up is "the badge of the harlot," and a bare decolletage an invitation to adultery. When Charles II ushered in the Restoration, Hall's parishioners ushered out their joyless minister, whose sentiments and world view suddenly ran contrary to those fostered by the monarch, and he died five years later. Former owner Edward Astle (1770-1816) was the son of famous antiquary and major manuscript collector Thomas Astle (1735-1803), and was a bibliophile in his own right. The elder Astle also had a library of around 1,500 printed books in addition to his early manuscripts, and it is possible that our volume was once a part of his collection. This is not a common book: OCLC finds just nine copies in U.S. libraries, and the Macclesfield copy is the only other one that appears in auction records since 1975. ELISA, Ouero l'Innocenz a Colpeuole. Historia Tragica del Vescouo di Belley, Seguita Durante il Regno del Christianiss. Henrico III. r di Francia, e di Polonia ... Tradotta dalla Lingua Francese Nell'Italiana dal Sig. Co. Honofrio Beuilacqua

In Venetia:: Per Giacomo Bortoli,. 1654.. 12mo: a^6 A - O^12 P^6. P3 mis-signed a3. 6-1/4" x 3-3/4". 1st edition thus, i.e., by this publisher, with the first Italian translation, research suggests, appearing in 1630. [12], 348 pp. Untrimmed.. Early drab paper binding with hand inked title to spine.. Spine a bit sun-tanned. Bookplate. Period pos to t.p. Leaves D1 &. D2 rounghly opened, with top corner lacking [just touching, but not. removing] page numbers. Paper defect to M12 [no text affected].. Withal, a pleasing VG+ copy.. This a translation of Camus' ƒlise, ou, L'innocence Coupable, which was first published in 1621. "Jean-Pierre Camus was one of the most prolific authors of the period 1620-1648. His prose is succinct, without the elaborate rhetoric of authors -- such as Antoine de Nervze -- from the previous generation. He also shows a vast knowledge of poetry. Camus's first works were strongly influenced by the Essays of Michel de Montaigne, albeit with more religious content. His spiritual works were directly inspired by Saint Franois de Sales; he was critical of mendicant orders and wrote extensively on poverty, grace and spiritual reflection. His fictional works encompass both novels and short stories. His dark and violent stories, often based on contemporary anecdotes or criminal incidents (he wrote over 1000 such works) were in the tradition of the horrific tales ("histoires tragiques") of Matteo Bandello, popular in France in the late Renaissance and early seventeenth century. His longer works show the influence of ancient Greek novels (such as the works of Heliodorus of Emesa and Achilles Tatius), with their scenes of tempests and kidnappings. Much of his fiction has a moralistic intention, showing human folly, the unruliness of passions, the dangers of illicit love, and the saving grace of divine love." [Wiki; see also: Sollier, Catholic Encyclopedia]. All Italian editons are rare... OCLC records just one holding of this edition [Harvard]. KVK locates 2 copies in Italy. . Manuscript Family History and Autobiographical Writings

Tall 8vo (10 1/4 x61/4), later half morocco and marbled boards, (60 pages with text) 160 pp. A complete index of names mentioned is included at the rear. Binding well worn, internally disbound with loose signatures, some aging and toning, but text pretty clean and easy to read. The first approximately 60 pages provide a detailed genealogy of the ancestors and descendants of Rev. Grant Powers of Goshen, Connecticut from the first Powers to come to America in 1654. His manuscript takes us to 1840. Following the genealogy there are about 60 pages of autobiographical writings of Rev. Grant, presumably unpublished. However, Rev. Powers was the author of "Historical Sketches of the Discovery, Settlement, and Progress of Events in the Coos Country and Vicinity, between 1754 & 1785." He also delivered an address to the people of Goshen, Connecticut in 1838, which were published. The Powers family included distinguished citizens from several New England states including Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Rev. Powers wrote this family record upon his being diagnosed with Angina Pectoris and in anticipation of his inevitable death. He died April 1, 1841.openlibrary.org.

His Highness Speech To Parliament in The Painted Chamber, At Their Dissolution, Upon Monday the 22d. Of January, 1654

London: Henry Hills, 1654 Book. Very Good-. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The prior owner, as was his occasional habit, has penciled the items Wing Listing #C7171 at the margin of the first title page, above this a trace of old/mild erasure is evident. The sum of the printing information,"Published To prevent Mistakes, and false copies. LONDON, Printed by Henry Hills Printer to His Highness The Lord Protector, and to be sold at the sign of Sir John Oldcastle near Py-Corner. MDCLIV." The pamphlet has been bound in navy cloth boards and numbers 36 pages (last page is note from Jessop forbidding reprint). Size is 7 3/8 X 5" collation quarto. Spine is neatly labeled in gilt on black. The listed grade may be thought of as a compromise between the restoration, newish and nicely done, and the text which has age darkening and edge chip and other issues which will be specified. Specfically, the title page has a mild crease which may or may not be visible in foto to accompany listing. The first page of text has lower corner piece missing (1/2 postage stamp size) and the last 2 pages have tinier chips out at their lower edge. The lower edge has the sort of unevenness of finishing and consistent darkness that I associate with a natural cutting at time of the books making, the same is the case with the fore-edge. The top edge has micro dog ear and tiny chip coming out at upper corner of 13th page. The later pages, in some cases, have partial number cropping at top, I supect this is as made, as this edge is darkened and surely was not altered to fit the modern reworking. Text is complete and has some fox, wrinkle and so forth, all seeming quite legible even where the typography is imperfect as is the case with the first page..

Scipione Mazzella, Italian writer and historian was born in Naples around the middle of the sixteenth century. Very little is known about Mazella except what may be gleaned only from his works. He wrote several works on antiquities and history. His major work Descrittione del Regno di Napoli was highly praised for its breadth of vision and its contribution to knowledge of the Kingdom of Naples as a whole, at the end of the sixteenth century. Mazella's work "represents a significant development ... and goes beyond merely a celebration of the capital but systematically observes the Kingdom of Naples as a whole. The book was translated into English by Samson Lennard and published under the title The Kingdom of Naples, London 1654. It was edited by James Howell, "a writer particularly attentive to events in Naples, as shown by his own A History of the Late Revolutions in the Kingdom of Naples, (London 1652)." According to Pedio (1973) much of our current knowledge of Naples in the early seventeenth century is derived from the work Mazella.

Amsterdam, apud Lodovicum Elzevirium, 1654. 1654 In -4, pp. (12) 191 (1 b.); 164 (appendix); 88 (epistola a Voetius); (4) 34 (Musica). Leg. piena pelle dell?epoca, dorso a nervetti con tit. e fregi oro (cuffie consumate, piccolo danno alla parte alta di una cerniera). Qualche leggero alone di umido al margine alto di alcune carte. Buon esemplare.

Amsterdam: Johanned Jansson Waesberge, 1672.

First edition, and a fine copy, of one of the great classics of science. "A book of prime importance in electrical discovery, air-pressure and the vacuum pump." Dibner 55; Evans 30; Horblit 44; Norman 952; Sparrow 99; Wheeler Gift 170.

Although diplomacy (during the Thirty Year War) and the position of Mayor of Magdeburg consumed much of Guericke's time, he devoted his brief leisure to scientific experiments. Guericke proved the existence of a vacuum through his famous experiment, illustrated by one of the double-page plates. "At Ratisbon in 1654 Guericke had performed one of the most dramatic experiments in the history of science, when, before the Imperial Diet, he showed how two teams of eight horses each could not separate a bronze pair of hemispheres from which he had exhausted the air" (Dibner, Founding Fathers of Electrical Science). To create the vacuum, Guericke invented the air-pump, and in a series of experiments that followed he demonstrated the weight and elasticity of air. The air-pump became of fundamental importance for the study of the physical properties of gases.

Guericke also demonstrated electrical attraction and repulsion, the discharging power of points, and constructed the first electrical generator. "Guericke constructed a spherical rotor of sulphur mounted on a crank; its rotation and contact upon it generated the first visible and audible electric sparks" (ibid.). As the Wheeler Gift catalogue remarks, "this remarkable work on experimental philosophy ranks next to Gilbert's in the number and importance of the electrical discoveries described."

Guericke's experiments were motivated by his profound Copernican cosmological views on the nature and composition of space, which are fully set forth in the present work (see DSB).. Folio (315 x 202 mm), pp [xvi, including the engraved title] 244 [6] with engraved title, engraved portrait of the author, two double-page engraved plates, and 21 engraved plates in text, many full-page (plate XVIII repeated, as is correct). A very fine copy in contemporary vellum, completely unrepaired, internally fresh and clean. Rare in such fine condition

Frankfurt: Matthaeus Merian, 1654. Folio (12 x 8 inches). Letterpress title-page with woodcut printer's device. Additional engraved title-page dated 1642, 2 double-page engraved maps of Germany and Switzerland, and 78 fine engraved plates, including 64 double-page and or folding (numerous marginal tears, some with early repairs crossing the image, a few pale stains, some minor worming to the last few gatherings affecting the images and text). Contemporary limp vellum (soiled, stained and joints split at the head and foot of the spine). Provenance: obscured ownership inscription dated 1665 on the title-page; inscribed by Gabriel le Clerc on the front paste-down and the title-page and dated 1685; lengthy inscription dated 1814 on the verso of the third blank. Third edition in German, first published in 1642, and then reissued many times and added to by Merian's son Caspar in 1653. The "Topographia Helvetiae" formed the first part of an extensive general topography of Germany. The author Matthaus Merian was a notable Swiss engraver born 1593 in Basel. He learned copperplate engraving in Zurich, though he studied later in such cities as Strasbourg, Nancy and Paris. He returned to Basel in 1615, moving to Frankfurt 1616. There he worked for Johann Theodor de Bry, the celebrated publisher whose daughter, Maria Magdelana he married in 1617. In 1620 he and his family moved back to Basel, though they returned to Frankfurt in 1623. Maria took over her father's publishing house upon his death. Profp. der Statt Parys wei folche an ietso an sufehen 1654 (Paris, France)Mathias MerianLarge illustrated plate from Topographia GalliaeAmsterdam: 1661Copperplate engravingSheet size: 12" x 32 1/2"Mathias Merian was one of the most prominent members of the leading print publishing family of 17th-century Germany, known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his editions of the noted series of travel books, the ?Great Voyages.? Born and trained in Basel, Switzerland, Merian joined the Frankfurt publishing house of Johann Theodor de Bry in 1616 and, the following year, he married de Bry?s daughter Maria Magdalena. Merian gained his greatest acclaim as head of the family publishing house following the death of his father-in-law in 1623. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing staff of assistants and pupils -- among them Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolf and Conrad Meyer of Zurich, and his sons-in-law Christoph Le Blon and Melchior Kusel. His most famous pupil, however, would prove to be his daughter, Maria Sybillia Merian, a truly exceptional botanical artist of the early 18th century.

Inscriptiones antiquae basilicae s. pauli ad viam ostiensem. romae, fr. moneta, 1654.

Cm. 37, pp. (4) lxiv (8).
