[Click Below for Full Description]

BRUYN (LE BRUN), Cornelis de.
Large-paper copy of the first edition of one of the most richly illustrated accounts of a voyage to Russia, Persia and adjacent countries and territories by the Dutch artist and traveller Cornelis de Bruijn (1652-1726/7). De Bruijn sailed for Archangel in 1701, proceeding to Moscow, where he stayed for over a year. In 1703 he left Moscow, traveling by way of Asia Minor (Turkey) to Persia, where he remained until 1705. After nearly a year in Isfahan, he headed for Persepolis, the ancient Achaemenid palace complex, the ruins of which had his special interest. He spent three months there, carefully drawing the ruins of the palace, the remaining reliefs and cuneiform inscriptions. His drawings of these ruins are the first reliable pictures of this palace to be accessible for Western scholars. Leaving Persia in 1705 he proceeded to India, Ceylon and the East Indies. He returned by much the same route, residing in Persia between 1706 and 1707, visiting, amongst other things, the ruins of Pasaragdes. The plates include large folding views of Moscow and Isfahan (194 x 40.5 cm!), portraits of Samoyeds, as well as many illustrations of local flora and fauna.Browned, some spotting, one plate with some paper torn off (ca. 9 x 2 cm), not affecting the image, some trails of wormholes in the last quires. Binding rebacked (as noted) with the original backstrip laid down and with new headbands. Overall a good copy on large paper.Howgego, to 1800, B-177; Klaversma & Hannema 310; Tiele, Bibl. 209..

[ANGLO-DUTCH WAR].
Collection of four pamphlets on the First Anglo-Dutch War, the first of the four wars between England and the Dutch Republic, caused by disputes over trade and fought entirely at sea between 1652 and 1654.The first pamphlet starts as a conversation discussing the unfortunate skirmish between the Dutch Admiral Maarten Tromp and the English Admiral Robert Blake and the upcoming war with England. The well-informed merchant brings up the seven articles the English proposed to regulate the trade and also the 36 articles the States-General offered as a counter proposal. The second pamphlet is the first edition of a follow-up to the previous conversation with the same three men. They talk about the courage of Admiral Tromp and the reluctance of the English to meet him head on. The conversation ends when they hear the devastating news about the storm that broke up Tromp's fleet and resulted in the loss of eleven of his ships (4 August 1652). The third item is the only edition of a letter from Admiral Tromp to the States General about his recent victory against the English fleet led by Admiral Blake on 10 December 1652, known as the Battle of Dungeness. The fourth is a pamphlet about the early naval heroism of the Dutch ca. 1440, intended as an example of naval courage to inspire those fighting in the First Anglo-Dutch War.All in good condition, with water stains on several pages of the first pamphlet and the foot margin of the third damaged by water.Knuttel 7213, 7246, 7197 & 7262; Tiele 4048, 4069, 4032 & 4082; STCN (6, 12, 1 & 5 copies)..

Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de
Printed by Richard Hodgkinsonne for Andrew Crooke, London, 1652. Second edition of the first English translation of Cervantes' masterpiece. Folio, bound in full contemporary calf with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in five compartments within raised gilt bands, quadruple gilt ruling with cornerpiece flourishes to the front and rear panels, woodcut devices to the titles, woodcut initials and headpieces. Translated from the original Spanish by Thomas Shelton, his first English translation published in 1612 was the first translation in any language, and took him only forty days to complete. The true first edition of Don Quixote appeared in two parts in 1605 and 1614. The first part of Shelton's first English version was published in 1612; with the second part was added in 1620, both published in quarto. The present volume is the first single-volume Shelton edition, and is the first folio edition. In near fine condition. Period ownership inscription to the title page. An exceptional example, the nicest we have seen. Often cited as the first modern novel, Cervantes' masterpiece Don Quixote remains not only the most influential work of literature to emerge from the Spanish Golden Age, but the most important work of the entire Spanish literary canon. The Shelton translation is generally considered the English translation that "realizes Cervantes' manner more nearly than any successor." (DNB). "It is interesting to realize that the first modern novel was composed by a sick, aged and impoverished man, who believed that a satirical tale might produce more revenue … [Click Below for Full Description]

PINTO, Fernão Mendes and Jan Hendrik GLAZEMAKER (translator).
Second edition of a translation into Dutch of the travels of the Portuguese explorer Pinto through Asia. Over a period of 21 years Pinto travelled to Africa, India and China and even claimed to have been in Tibet. By his own account he was the first westerner to enter Japan. Although the historical accuracy of his account is debatable, his story is highly entertaining and remained very popular for long after his death. The first edition in Dutch was published in 1652 and translated by Jan Hendrik Glazemaker, most famous for his translations of the works of Descartes. Glazemaker, who did not know Portuguese, based himself on an earlier French translation by Bernard Figuier. Instead of providing an accurate translation, he edited the text to conform to the radical enlightenment ideals of Spinoza, supported by himself and his publisher. This stripped Pinto's travels of most of the Catholic elements, including miracles and saints. "Glazemaker excludes what cannot be explained from a scientific perspective" (Couto). What remains is the image of the ruthless Portuguese who used faith to justify their cruelty and greed. Contrasting with them is the book's description of a utopian China in which religions harmoniously coexist. The back of the engraved title-page, letterpress title-page and first page of the introduction were used for a writing exercise. The main allegorical figure of the engraved title-page has been perforated at the edges and the 14 following leaves, including the letterpress title-page and one engraving, contain small, nearly invisible perforations. RUMPHIUS, Georg Everhard.
Second edition, in the original Dutch, of a monumental and splendidly illustrated account of Ambonese and other East Indian marine specimens excluding vertebrate fish, apparently drawn in the year of the death of the owner, Rumphius. The 60 large engraved plates show crustaceans, sea urchins, sand-dollars, starfish, shellfish, barnacles and coral, along with crystals, minerals, amber, fossils and even some man-made artefacts. Some plates show one large figure, others more than twenty small ones. Its precise descriptions and information on habitat anticipate modern marine biology.Rumphius, a German physician and naturalist, worked for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) from 1652 to his death, mostly on Ambon in the Moluccas. Traditionally the illustrations were attributed to Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), but this has recently proven erroneous. Slightly creased, otherwise in very good condition and wholly untrimmed, leaving broad margins. Binding slightly rubbed and sides a bit soiled, but still firm and good.Landwehr & V.d. NICOLS, Thomas.
First edition of the German translation of A lapidary, first published in English in 1652 and compiled by Thomas Nicols: ''the first independent gemological book by a British author ... based firmly upon Boetius de Boodt'' (Sinkankas). Nicols lists all the true gems, but also covers fossils, coral, pearls, amber, etc. For each he discusses the forms, appearance, properties (diligently but somewhat sceptically reporting magical, mystical and medical claims), origins, classification, uses, prices, engraving on gems, etc. Nicols makes an intelligent synthesis of the earlier literature, as well as original contributions primarily in practical aspects related to jewellery, such as enhancing stones with reflective foils or dyestuffs, hardening softer stones, and the related subjects of falsification and adulteration. With a few minor smudges. Binding slightly stained. Overall in very good condition.Carter, Sea of Pearls, p. 92; Sinkankas 4757; Schuh II, 3527; VD 17, 3:302273B; cf. Hoover 610 & 611; Ward 1656..

This was the first book (excluding his contribution to the 1644 volume Certain Disquisitions and Considerations) published by Seth Ward (1617-1689), then Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford, later bishop of Exeter and of Salisbury. The Essay is on the nature of God and the soul in general, but also constitutes an extensive refutation of the materialist philosophy of Thomas Hobbes, as set forth in Hobbes's Leviathan, which was first published the previous year. "The treatise itself dealt with the being and attributes of God, the soul's immortality and the truth and authority of scripture, and Ward claimed that he had composed it several years previously. Towards the end of his prefatory remarks, Ward suddenly digresses into a topical attack upon Hobbes, drawing attention to the philosopher's denial of the existence of incorporeal substances, a position at odds with Ward's orthodox defence of the soul's immortality. What follows is a carefully structured rejection of Hobbes's authority" (Parkin, Taming the Leviathan, 2007). This marked a change in Ward's thinking towards Hobbes, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Published in London, printed for Humphrey Mosely, at the Princes Arms in St. Paul's Church yard; William Bentley, and Thomas Heath, in Covent-Garden, M.DC.LII (1652). As Cassandra was completed in 1650 in French, this appears to be the first published English version. Although the name of the translator is not given, it may have been Charles Cotterell. (GEMOLOGY). NICOLS, THOMAS
Cambridge: Thomas Buck, Printer to the Universitie of Cambridge, 1652. FIRST EDITION. This is the first printing of the first book written in English on gemstones. Nicols (fl. 1652) prefaces his work with a warning to the reader against attempting to use gems for supernatural purposes, lest one be ensnared by the devil, and then provides a table classifying stones by size, rarity, hardness, color, and clarity. The first section of the text is devoted to a general history of origins of gems, relying on material from the works of Boethius de Boot and Pliny. Nicols then discusses ways to polish, refine, and present stones, and warns of tricks the unscrupulous may use to fool the unwary buyer. The section ends with an examination of the supernatural effects of stones, and how to tell if this is divinely or diabolically inspired. The second part of the work details the properties, uses, and value of various stones, beginning with transparent gems like diamonds, sapphires, and emeralds, and proceeding through opaque specimens like lapis lazuli and marble, then ending with common but useful stones, including flints and whetstones. There were two further English editions of the work, in 1653 and 1659, and German editions in 1675 and 1734. This is the only work by Nicols, of whom little is known apart from his association with Jesus College, Cambridge, proclaimed on the title page here. This is not an excessively rare work, but copies with contents this fine are hard to find.. 185 x 145 mm. (7 1/4 x 5 5/8"). 6 p.l., 239, [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. Paris, France: Denys Bechet Paris, 1652. This is an oldie and it has bumps and bruises (See photos) It has some water stains and light foxing. It is tightly bound, in very readable condition and overall good. Have a look. This is a rare book. Continvation De L'Histoire Dv Regne De Lovys Le Ivste Treiziesme Dv Nom was published in France in 1652 by Denys Bechet, rue Sainct Iacques, au Compas d'Or, & a l'Efcu au Soleil, with the Kings permission. My French is not great, but it contains the history of Louis XIII (The Just), and France during his reign. It talks about most events during his reign including Cardinal Richelieu. Have a good look at the pictures and please feel free to ask questions. Louis XIII (27 September 1601 - 14 May 1643) was King of France from 1610 to 1643 and King of Navarre (as Louis II) from 1610 to 1620, when the crown of Navarre was merged with the French crown. Shortly before his ninth birthday, Louis became King of France and Navarre after his father Henry IV was assassinated. His mother, Marie de' Medici, acted as regent during his minority. Mismanagement of the kingdom and ceaseless political intrigues by Marie and her Italian favourites led the young king to take power in 1617 by exiling his mother and executing her followers. Louis XIII, taciturn and suspicious, relied heavily on his chief ministers, first Charles d'Albert, duc de Luynes and then Cardinal Richelieu, to govern the Kingdom of France. King and cardinal are remembered for establishing the Academie Francaise, and ending the revolt of the French Nobility. They systematically destroy … [Click Below for Full Description]

D'Abbeville, Nicholas Sanson
1652. Excellent example of one of Sanson's first world maps. From the early 1630's Nicholas Sanson, originally from Abberville, had been working in collaboration with his older compatriot Melchior Tavernier. Then, from about 1645, he entered into association with Pierre Mariette, often working from the Mariette's address in Paris. The map depicts California as an island and is one of the first to distinguish the Great Lakes, all five not being named until Sanson's 1656 map of New France. Based largely on Jesuit reports, Lac Superior and Lac des puans ('Lake of evil smells' for Lake Michigan) are here introduced but Erie ou Du Chat, identified by Boisseau in a regional map of 1643 is not named. To the south the faint outline of Terra Magellanica is retained, Australia is only partially shown and still marked Beach. Names on the west and south coasts reflect Dutch discoveries there but the remaining coastline, falling sharply south-east, is entirely speculative, Van Dieman's Land and New Zealand are omitted. This edition is identified by the date 1652 in the publication line in the lower margin. Reference Shirley 394 390mm x 550mm (15.35" x 21.65")
