Da man 1652 lod Huitfeldts historie, der oprindelig var udkommet i kvartbind, genoptrykke i 2 foliobind, forsynede med et kobberstukket billede af Forfatteren, satte Vitus Bering derunder nogle latinske vers i hans ejendommelige stil, deriblandt følgende: "Huitfeldt har skrevet, hvad andre har gjort; men hvad han haver udført,/granske vil kommende Slægt, saa længe Danmark bestaar."         The Life of the Renowned Sr Philip Sidney....

London: For Henry Siele, 1652. First Edition. 12mo in 8s. ....With the true interest of England as it then stood in relation to all forrain princes: and particularly for suppressing the power of Spain stated by him. His principall actions, counsels, designes, and death. Together with a short account of the maxims and policies used by Queen Elizabeth in her government. Two engraved portrait frontispieces, one mounted of Sidney and another of Greville bound in. [4]247pp. with spurious pagination but all catchwords matched and complete. " The 'Life', though written apparently ca. 1610 and perhaps revised later, was not published until twenty-four years after Greville's deah. It is not so much a biography as an historical survey by a disillusioned politician of an earlier and less corrupt time when Elizabeth, though not faultless, was unswerving in her determination to make England great, and Sidney, of all too brief a period, stood above all others as the militant champion of European Protestantism." (English Literature in the Seventhteenth Century, Bodeleian Library, 1957).A hansome copy, rebound in 20th century England, in full brown polished calf, raised bands, one compartment lettered in gilt, endpapers renewed. A lovely copy displaying no foxing, but just a hint of toning. Very nice.

The History of The Valorous and Witty-Knight-Errant, Don Quixote, of the Mancha Bound With The Pleasant Notes Upon Don Quixot

London: Printed by Richard Hodgkinsonne, for Andrew Crooke, 1652. Two works bound in one volume. Quarto, full brown leather, gilt tooling and titles to the spine, gilt device to the front and rear panel, raised bands. Bound with the first edition of Edmund Gayton's Pleasant Notes Upon Don Quixot, which was published in 1654. Three title pages (The History being divided in two parts) with woodcut devices, ornamental head- and tail-pieces, and large decorated initials. In very good condition with some toning to the text. The Pleasant Notes Upon Don Quixot was a commentary on Cervantes, with three early references to Shakespeare. Repeatedly Gayton departs from its subject to introduce colorful anecdotes of contemporary London. Shakespeare is named in a list of English writers on p. 21; on p. 95, Don Quixote is called "The Shakespeare of the Mancha. Don Quixote tells the tale of a man so entranced by reading about the chivalrous romantic ideals touted in books that he decides to take up his sword and become a knight-errant himself, with the aims of defending the helpless and warding off the wicked. With his somewhat confused laborer-turned-squire, Sancho Panza, they roam the world together and have adventures that have haunted reader's imaginations for nearly four hundred years. Don Quixote is generally recognized as the first modern novel. Over those years, it has had an incredible influence on thousands of writers, from Dickens to Faulkner, who once said he reread it once a year, "just as some people read the Bible". Vladamir Nabokov is quoted as saying, "Don Quixote is greater today than he was in Cervantes's womb. [He] looms so wonderfully above the skyline of literature, a gaunt giant on a lean nag, that the book lives and will live through [his] sheer vitality... He stands for everything that is gentle, forlorn, pure, unselfish, and gallant. The parody has become a paragon."

De wonderlyke reizen van Fernando Mendez Pinto; die hij in de tijt van eenëntwintig jaren in Europa, Asia en Afrika... gedaan heeft.Amsterdam, printed for Jan Rieuwertsz I and Jan Hendricksz Boom, 1653. 4to. With an engraved title-page and 7 engraved plates. Modern vellum.

STCN (2 copies); Cordier, Japonica, col. 38; Cordier, Sinica, col. 2067; Couto, The marvellous travels of Fernando Mendez Pinto across the Low Countries; Thiele 193. Second edition of a translation into Dutch of the travels of the Portuguese explorer Pinto through Asia. Over a period of 21 years Pinto travelled to Africa, India and China and even claimed to have been in Tibet. By his own account he was the first westerner to enter Japan. Although the historical accuracy of his account is debatable, his story is highly entertaining and remained very popular for long after his death. The first edition in Dutch was published in 1652 and translated by Jan Hendrik Glazemaker, most famous for his translations of the works of Descartes. Glazemaker, who did not know Portuguese, based himself on an earlier French translation by Bernard Figuier. Instead of providing an accurate translation, he edited the text to conform to the radical enlightenment ideals of Spinoza, supported by himself and his publisher. This stripped Pinto's travels of most of the Catholic elements, including miracles and saints. "Glazemaker excludes what cannot be explained from a scientific perspective" (Couto). What remains is the image of the ruthless Portuguese who used faith to justify their cruelty and greed. Contrasting with them is the book's description of a utopian China in which religions harmoniously coexist. The back of the engraved title-page, letterpress title-page and first page of the introduction were used for a writing exercise. The main allegorical figure of the engraved title-page has been perforated at the edges and the 14 following leaves, including the letterpress title-page and one engraving, contain small, nearly invisible perforations. With a restored tear in A1, some thumbing and some water stains in the margins including a larger water stain at the bottom corner of the second half of the book; a good copy.
