Markham, Gervase
London: William Wilson, 1651. [16], 591, [21] p., pagination erratic,: divisional title conjugate, ill. ; 19 cm. Armorial bookplate of William Hanbury, Esq. (1704-1768) of Kelmarsh Hall, Northamptonshire. Original 17th century calf scored in blind, rebacked, some foxing throughout, but overall a remarkably well preserved copy with all plates present, including the engraved frontispiece and the splendid large folding woodcut, unsophisticated and in excellent condition. An early edition of this great English manual of veterinary medicine first published in 1615, by one of the earliest western owners of and dealers in Arabian horses. Very rare. Although Markham's Maister-peece was reprinted a number of times, surviving copies are generally in poor condition. The plates in particular are often missing, not just the extraordinary centerfold but also the two smaller folding plates. All are preserved here in generally excellent condition, with no signs of repair. A superior copy of a landmark work.

Nicolas SANSON d'Abeville (Abbeville 1600 - Parigi 1667)
1651. Mappamondo di Sanson. A differenza delle precedenti mappe olandesi, quella di Sanson si concentra sulle informazioni geografiche e idrografiche. Lo spazio attorno ai due emisferi viene lasciato intenzionalmente vuoto. Sanson's map of the world. Unlike the earlier Dutch maps, Sanson's map focuses on the geographic and hydrographic information, the space around the double hemispheres left intentionally blank. The outline of the continents and the illustrations of interior information is very accurate for the day. For instance, this map shows all five Great Lakes, a feature shown for the first time by Sanson. However, Sanson was not immune to the cartographic myths of his day. The map shows a strange outline of a great southern continent, as well as several reflections of early knowledge of Australia, an interesting combination of old, mistaken beliefs and data from early explorations in the southern seas. Sanson also shows a large, mythical land of Jesso, El Dorado's Lake Parima in South America, and most interestingly, California depicted as an island. In Sanson's world map, made at a time when cartographers were first developing a scientific picture of the world, we can see the overlap of the old and new world views by the dominant mapmaker of his day. In 1538 he embarked on his first voyage to India, arriving at Goa and immediately proceeding to the defense of Diu. Castro was responsible for the overthrow of Mahmud, King of Gujarat whose interests threatened Portuguese control of the Goan coast. DUPUY, Pierre [attributed]
Paris: Sebastien & Gabriel Cramoisy. 32, [10], 220, 223, 192, 2612, [6]p. 39 cm full leather folio with gilt on spine, trim of boards, and square edge. Binding worn, hinges cracking, corners bumped, spine label chipped. Ex-library with bookplates on front pastedown. Some thumbing, minor foxing, large mark on p. 143. Pierre Dupuy (1582-1651) was keeper of the French king's library, a post which allowed him to become acquainted with and copy an enormous mass of unpublished documents. These furnished him with the material for some excellent works, probably including this one. However, this book also bears some relationship to a smaller work by Pierre Pithou (1539-1596), sometimes published under the same title. Whoever compiled it, it remains an important contribution to the history of the relations of church and state in the Middle Ages. The text is written from the Gallican standpoint, i.e. in favour of the rights of the crown in temporal and political matters, which explains the delay in their publication until after Dupuy's death. Very Good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Felicity of Queen Elizabeth and her Times With Other Things Francis Ld Bacon, Viscount St Alban 1651 T Newcomb for George Latham : London 5" by 3" [10], 168pp SUMMARY A fascinating seventeenth century work mostly by Sir Francis Bacon. Very rare, not seen at auction since 1977. Collated, complete. (ESTC R17340) This work begins with the titular work. Here Bacon writes a short essay with his opinons on Queen Elizabeth. He is greatly in favour of the deceased Queen in this work and speaks of her in a positive light. He examines the religion, foreign policy and paints a general picture of her reign. Interestingly, it was not until James I's reign that Bacon was knighted and it is believed that Elizabeth did not care much for Bacon in court. The rumour that she referred to him as 'the young Lord'Keeper' is just that. This work also speaks much about Elizabeth's father, Henry VIII. Following the titular work are the six following writings. 'With The Apology of Sr Francis Bacon in Certain Imputations concerning the Late Earl of Essex, written to the Right Honorable his very good Lord, the Earl of Devonshire.' HOBBES, Thomas.
London printed for Andrew Crooke at the Green Dragon in St Pauls Church-yard. THIRD EDITION, "ORNAMENTS EDITION", title page dated 1651, but circa 1680. Good impression of the figure at top of engraved title, as often after the first edition impressions are weak. Tall folio in 4s, approximately 330 x 200 mm, 13 x 7¾ inches, pages without watermarks, pages: engraved pictorial title page followed by printed title with 25 ornaments (fleurons) in 5 rows, leaves A2 & A3, which contain The Epistle, Contents and Errata, folding table, 1-250, 249-256, 261-394, mispagination present in all copies, bound in full calf, early covers with new spine at sometime, gilt title and date to spine. Binding rubbed and scuffed, spine faded, small repairs to corners, pale staining and age-browning to folding table, small repair to blank side, no loss, pale staining to title page, 20 pages heavily browned, all readable, 2 small holes in text with 2 letters missing but easily understood, pale age-browning and spotting to many margins. According to Noel Malcolm, pages 258 and 264 of his Works of Thomas Hobbes, "the Ornaments (edition) is far from being a luxury product; it uses a distinctively rough and poor-quality paper, which is thin, feathery to the touch, prone to browning"; See also Noel Malcolm pages 258-271; Carl H. Pforzheimer Library of English Literature, Volume 2, page 494, states "This copy, from the breadth of its margins, appears to be upon large-paper (our copy is the same size). However, the few other copies of this edition which we have seen are all nearly as large as the present, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

HARVEY, William
1651 1ed William Harvey Generation of Animals Childbirth Embryology Obstetrics First edition of the first book on obstetrics by an English physician! An important medical treatise on generation, embryology, and conception by famous English physiologist William Harvey. “After the publication of ‘De motu cordis,’ Harvey turned his attention to the study of generation. Even if Harvey had not discovered the circulation of the blood, his remarkable work on embryology would have placed him in the front ranks of biological scientists. Without benefit of the compound microscope, his work was necessarily limited; nevertheless, nothing comparable had been done since Aristotle. He disbelieved the previously held doctrine of 'preformation' of the fetus, maintaining instead that it proceeds from the ovum by gradual building up of its parts" (HoH). This book, while not as medically polarizing as his treatise on blood circulation, includes a section that is often considered the first work on obstetrics and midwifery published by an English physician. (GM). This rare 1651 first edition is highly desirable and is complete with the added, illustrated title page.
Second edition, in the same year as the first. The discovery of the thoracic duct. "In his experiments with live dogs Pecquet discovered the thoracic duct and cisterna chylii, which he named the receptaculum chylii. He correctly described the termination of the chyliferous vessels (Aselli's 'lacteal veins') in the cisterna, confuting the erroneous notion that the vessels ended in the liver; he also described the junction of the thoracic duct at the union of the jugular and subclavial veins. In a rare early instance of nearly simultaneous triple independent discovery, the thoracic duct was also discovered independently by the Swedish physician Olof Rudbeck and by Thomas Bartholin" (Norman Catalogue 1676). The volume also contains Pecquet's dissertation on the circulation of the blood, and letters to Pecquet from Auzout and Mersenne.See G&M 1095 and Grolier One Hundred (Medicine) 28A (the Paris edition). The first edition is properly described as a very rare book, but this second edition is probably even rarer. The editions of 1654 and 1661 are more usually seen.

Francis Ld Bacon, Viscount St Alban
1651. The first edition of this scarce work. 'With The Apology of Sr Francis Bacon in Certain Imputations concerning the Late Earl of Essex, written to the Right Honorable his very good Lord, the Earl of Devonshire.' 'The Lord Bacon his Leter to the most Illustrious and Most Excellent Prince Charles, Prince of Wales.' 'The Lord Treasurer Burleigh's advice to Queen Elizabeth in matters of religion and state.' Following Burleigh's advice is a poem which, although not stated to this work, is by Sir Henry Wotton. To this work the poem has been titled 'To The Ld Bacon then Falling from Favour.' The Ancient Poetical Tracts of the Sixteenth Century by John Heneage Jesse, and several other sources, state that this poem was actually written by Wotton in reference to the fall of the Earle of Somerset following the murder of Sir Thomas Overbury. Bacon actually prosecuted Somerset durin … [Click Below for Full Description]

ARNOBIUS, Rhetor
1651 1ed Arnobius of Sicca Adversus Gentes Diocletian PAGANISM Idol Worship ROME Arnobius of Sicca was a 4th-century early Christian church father who was mentioned by name in Saint Jerome as a Numidian rhetorician and dream interpreter. In fact, Jerome notes that Arnobius’s Christian conversion was due to a dream. However, Arnobius is known to have only written one work – a work dismissing dreams and paganism – ‘Adversus Gentes’. Translated as ‘Against the Pagans’, this apologetic work was divided into seven distinct books and was a direct response to Diocletian’s persecution of Christians. Roman Emperor Diocletian was justifying his torture and persecution of Christians; thus, Arnobius felt it necessary to defend the monotheistic views of Christianity and condemn the idol worship in temples in the Roman Empire. Other curious inclusions in this work extend to the philosophical. This work also features the first known studies of what would eventually become known as Pascal’s Wager and the argument over the existence of God. Much of the influence of these books come from the philosophy of Lucretius and Plato, rather than the Bible. This 1651 first Lyon edition features the commentary and notes of Theodore Canter, Godescalc Stewech, Gebhard Elmenhorst, and most notably Antonius Thysius.
