CARTWRIGHT, WILLIAM
CARTWRIGHT, WILLIAM. Comedies, Tragi-Comedies, with other Poems. London: For Humphrey Moseley, 1651. 8vo. Engraved port. by P. Lombart. 5 section titles, with the duplicate leaves U1-3 as usual, blank f4 present, b2 folded and untrimmed to preserve shoulder notes. Modern calf, very skillfully executed in seventeenth-century style. Title and dedication leaf and a few running heads slightly cropped by the binder's knife, and one note to the binder cropped. A very nice, complete copy of a bibliographically confusing book. The Arthur Spingarn copy, rebound, with his bookplate and collation notes laid in. First edition of Cartwright's works, containing both plays and poems. The preliminaries, which occupy over a hundred pages and contain more than fifty commendatory and elegiac poems, are bibliographically confusing due to cancelled and inserted leaves that vary between copies (see Greg for an analysis). This copy collates the same as the Hayward copy except it contains an additional leaf of commendatory verse inserted following a7. The frontispiece portrait of Cartwright in his library is interesting in that it depicts the old custom of placing books on the shelves fore-edge outward. Greg 3:1027; Hayward 104; Wing C-709. Engraved title-page (and printed). (60),420,(1) pp. and 20 engraved plates. Pastedown inside frontcover a bit soiled. Front-free endpaper with some calculations in old hand. The plates having a brownspot in upper left corners, but outside image. Second French edition (translated from the first edition (Latin) of "Principia philosophiae", 1644 by L'Abbe Picot). Descartes here published his general system of epistemology and physics - including his Vortice-theory, the impossibility of a vacuum, etc. - with its Copernicanism mitigated by the idea that all motion is relative. In Descartes’s letter prefaced to this French translation of the Principles, he writes that two, and only two, conditions determined whether the first principles proposed could be accepted as true: "First they must be so clear and evident that the mind of man cannot doubt their truth when it attentively applies itself to consider them"; and secondly, everything else must be deducible from them. But he went on to admit,"It is really only God alone who has perfect wisdom, that is to say, who has a complete knowledge of the truth of all things." Brunet II:611. DONNE, JOHN
London: Printed by J. Flesher, for Richard Marriot, 1651. FIRST EDITION. This volume contains 129 letters that were preserved by Donne's son, who also arranged for their printing. They are not "edited" in the usual modern sense, but, as Keynes says, with understatement, "they have much literary and biographical importance." Among the more illustrious recipients are Edward, Lord Herbert of Cherbury, Thomas Lucey, Sir Henry Wotton, John Harington, and probably George Herbert. The present item was once owned by Archibald Primrose (1847-1929), 5th Earl of Rosebery and 1st Earl of Midlothian, a Liberal politician who served briefly as Britain's prime minister in 1894-95. A fabulously wealthy man who then married the greatest heiress of the day, Hannah de Rothschild, Rosebery was able to indulge his passions for racehorses and for collecting books. The stamp and morocco plate indicate this volume resided at Durdans, the house in Epsom where he spent his final years. While copies of the "Letters" do come up at auction, they are often lacking the frontispiece portrait and many in contemporary bindings have been rebacked. Ours is complete and in a very fortunate state of preservation, no doubt due in part to its excellent provenance.. 186 x 135 mm. (7 1/4 x 5 1/4"). 4 p.l. (including one blank), 318, [2] (blank) pp. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary unlettered sheep. With frontispiece portrait. Curiosa mathematica, Kunststücke, Salonmagie, occulta, Billard - Ens, Caspar:

HOBBES, Thomas.
London Printed for Andrew Crooke at the Green Dragon in St. Pauls Church-yard. First edition, first issue (with boar's head device to title-page). Folio (28.75 x 19.5 cm), [6], 248, 247-256, 261-396 pp., additional engraved title-page, folding table, complete, text continuous despite pagination, modern calf antique, gilt arabesque to upper cover, a fine example with wide margins. A classic work on statecraft and a landmark of western philosophy. Written during the English Civil War (1642–1651), Leviathan argues for a social contract and rule by an absolute sovereign. Hobbes wrote that civil war and the brute situation of a state of nature ("the war of all against all") could only be avoided by strong undivided government. Hobbes begins his treatise on politics with an account of human nature. He presents an image of man as matter in motion, attempting to show through example how everything about humanity can be explained materialistically, that is, without recourse to an incorporeal, immaterial soul or a faculty for understanding ideas that are external to the human mind. Hobbes describes human psychology without any reference to the summum bonum, or greatest good, as previous thought had done. Not only is the concept of a summum bonum superfluous, but given the variability of human desires, there could be no such thing. Consequently, any political community that sought to provide the greatest good to its members would find itself driven by competing conceptions of that good with no way to decide among them. The result would be civil war. There is, however, Hobbes states, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

PALLET, Jean.
A Rouen chez Jean Berthelin dans la court du Palais 1651 - Two works in one volume, 8vo, engraved title page and ff. [x], [278], including final blank P8; [viii], 231; the first work a little waterstained at beginning, and with one leaf (ãiii) misbound in the prelims, but quite complete; the second work with inkstaining in lower outer blank corner towards end, not affecting text; bound in contemporary vellum over pasteboard (somewhat stained, with area of vellum missing from lower cover, but quite sound), marbled pastedowns but plain endpapers. Modern ownership inscription of James O. Crosbie. First edition of the first Spanish-French dictionary, by Jean Pallet, dedicated to the young Henri de Bourbon, Prince de Condé (1588-1646), father of the le grand Condé. In his dedication Pallet acknowledges that Condé already knows Latin and Italian, by the 'soigneuse instruction' of M. le Febure, and says (in effect) that when he adds Spanish to these he will have all the languages worth knowing. The second work is a revised version of César Oudin's Spanish grammar, published by his son Antoine: it has a new dedication to Henry Percy (d. 1659), younger son of the Earl of Northumberland, who had fought for the King in the Civil War but retired to France in 1645 where he joined Queen Henrietta Maria. He was in favour of peace and admired the philosophy of Hobbes, two traits which did not endear him to the stricter members of the royalist party in exile. Palau 210183 and 207277. At least one copy of the Pallet has a portrait of the dedicatee inserted after the title page, but that copy … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francis Ld Bacon, Viscount St Alban
London-T Newcomb for George Latham, 1651. Book. A fascinating seventeenth century workmostly by Sir Francis Bacon. The first edition of this scarce work. Very rare, not seen at auction since 1977. Collated, complete. (ESTC R17340) This work begins with the titular work. Here Bacon writes a short essaywith his opinons onQueen Elizabeth. He is greatly in favour of the deceasedQueen in this workand speaks of herin a positive light. He examines the religion, foreign policy and paints a general picture of her reign. Interestingly, it was not until James I's reign that Bacon was knighted and it is believed that Elizabeth did not care much for Bacon in court. The rumour that she referred to him as 'the young Lord'Keeper' is just that. This work also speaks much about Elizabeth's father, Henry VIII. Following the titular work are the six following writings. 'With The Apology of Sr Francis Bacon in Certain Imputations concerning the Late Earl of Essex, written to the Right Honorable his very good Lord, the Earl of Devonshire. ' 'The Lord Bacon his Leter to the most Illustrious and MostExcellent Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. ''The LordTreasurer Burleigh's advice to Queen Elizabeth in matters of religion and state. 'Following Burleigh's advice is a poem which, although not stated to this work, is by Sir Henry Wotton. To this work the poem has been titled 'To The Ld Bacon then Falling fromFavour. 'The Ancient Poetical Tracts of the Sixteenth Century by John Heneage Jesse, and several other sources, state that this poem wasactually written by Wotton in reference to thefall ofthe Earl … [Click Below for Full Description]

BROGNOLO, Candido
Marco Antonio Rubei, 1651. Complete with half title, woodcut initials and headpieces; lacks first blank. Early vellum with manuscript title on spine; despite occasional browning an excellent copy. Inscription on title page of St. Pervi dated 1664. First edition of this extraordinary manual on exorcism that was placed on the Index in 1727 by the Sacred Congregation. The author, a Franciscan friar and professor of theology, offers a theoretical and practical handbook to clergy in charge of dealing with cases of demoniac activities and behaviors. He first defines the nature of diabolical possession and sets the guidelines for an exorcism, citing multiple cases of demonic possession. Brognolo specialized in the process of identification and diagnosis of possessions of preternatural origin. He dedicates much of his work to the analysis of the unmistakable signs of the possession, providing detailed descriptions of the symptoms of the presence of evil, detailed formulae for the recognition of the state of demoniacal possession, for the discovery of a demon's name, for the cause of possession, and most importantly the step-by-step directions for the expulsion of demons. Brognolo also lists a variety of poor and ill-chosen techniques some exorcists use, among them slapping possessed people and beating them in cruel and ferocious means inappropriate and sinful for exorcists. He attacks priests who touched their female patients immodestly and in a manner that causes excitement. Growing anxiety concerning the moral standards of the clergy was a major part of the post-Tridentine reform … [Click Below for Full Description]
