1651. GRANDE VOLUMEIN FORMATO 36 CM X 26 CM CIRCA OTTIMA LA RILEGATURA CONE DA FOTOLìvio, Tito (lat. T. Livius). - Storico latino (n. Padova 59 a. C. - m. 17 d. [Click Below for Full Description]

Decorated and historiated initials throughout, typographic music notations. Beautifully bound in contemporary Venetian red morocco, elaborately gilt, smooth spine profusely gilt with small tools, edges gilt and gauffered, two original catches (lower cover) and clasps. Minor repairs at head and tail of spine. One of the very few VENETIAN Baroque bookbindings. The present example is preserved in museum quality condition and demonstrates the influence of the leading Roman atelier of day, Gregorio Andreoli, all over Italy. Whereas Roman baroque bindings are ubiquitous and have been extensively studied, reproduced, and exhibited, contemporary Venetian examples are rare; consequently they have received almost zero scholarly attention, and published examples are comparatively few in number. There can be no doubt that this particular Venetian Missal is rare: only a single copy is listed the Catalogo SBN, a network of 5,352 Italian libraries, namely the mutilated example at the Biblioteca San Francesco della Vigna in Venice. Camillo Saccenti (Bologna 1614 - 1688)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Nicolas SANSON d'Abeville (Abbeville 1600 - Parigi 1667)
"Sanson's map of the world. Unlike the earlier Dutch maps, Sanson's map focuses on the geographic and hydrographic information, the space around the double hemispheres left intentionally blank. The outline of the continents and the illustrations of interior information is very accurate for the day. For instance, this map shows all five Great Lakes, a feature shown for the first time by Sanson. However, Sanson was not immune to the cartographic myths of his day. The map shows a strange outline of a great southern continent, as well as several reflections of early knowledge of Australia, an interesting combination of old, mistaken beliefs and data from early explorations in the southern seas. Sanson also shows a large, mythical land of … [Click Below for Full Description]

RUSE, Henrick.
Two important works on fortification, together forming the complete works of the army captain and from 1651 city military engineer of Amsterdam, Henrick Ruse (1624-1679), the first to attempt to reform and update the tradition of Dutch fortification established during the Eighty Years' War, paving the way for the greatest exponent of the new Dutch fortification, Menno van Coehoorn. Together they contain eight double-page plates with fortification plans (mostly showing details), profiles and perspective views, plus a large folding fortification plan. The title-page illustration, an extremely detailed view of fortifications under construction, not only shows the equipment, directors and workmen, and working methods, but is also a work of art in its own right, reminiscent of Rembrandt or Zeeman. With bookplate. With minor damage to the foot margin of the engraved title-page (it has also left a small stain in the foot margin of the 3 following leaves), but still in very good condition, with only an occasional minor spot and with generous margins (preserving part of one deckle). Two important works in the evolution of Dutch fortification, especially concerning the city of Amsterdam, with etchings of the highest artistic quality.l Jähns II, 80; Jordan 3251 & 3252 (5 & 2 copies); Sloos, Warfare 8034 & 8039; STCN (3 & 1 copies).

In the year 1627, he published the Sylva Sylvarum, with an address to the reader, explaining the intention of Lord Bacon in the compilation of ; this work, and the probable objections which might be made to the publication; that it was not methodical ; and that many of the experiments would be deemed vulgar and trivial. 1651 By, Francis Bacon Printed for W.Lee Condition: Please see photos. GREENLAND COMPANY.)
[London: 1651]. Folio broadside (321 x 234 mm). Light chipping around extremities without loss to type, central crease. A very good copy. A printed petition signed by English whalers and fishers around Greenland opposing the monopolistic practices of the Greenland Company, addressed to the parliament of the new Commonwealth. The petitioners, led by Richard Warner, claim that the Greenland Company is both abusing its position and under-utilizing it: "the Greenland Company strive to hinder all Englishmen, saving those of their own Company from fishing there, which are an inconsiderable handful of, about 30. or 40. persons and yet they do nothing neer send out sufficient shipping to supply this Common-wealth with oyl or whalefinn". The petitioners state that if trade was liberalized "there would be twice or thrice as many ships sent every year for Greenland, are now by the Greenland Company. and this nation supplied with a full quantity of fish oyls at cheap rates, without the help of forraigners; yea, and in a few years be able to transport into forraign nations for their supply". The petitioners also state that the men of the Company have used violence against competitors, and demand restitution. The broadside is of great rarity - the only copy in institutional holdings is the British Library copy, in the Thomason collection, which bears the annotated date of 6 January 1650, although ESTC following Wing dates the publication to 1651. ESTC T13818 & T13828; Lewis, The English fable: Aesop and literary culture, 1651-1740, p. 149; New Cambridge bibliography of English literature II, col. 498. Attractively bound first editions of the two series of fables written by the celebrated English poet and dramatist John Gay (1685-1732). Gay became famous with the present publication of Fables and the opera The beggar's opera. Gay wrote his fables for Prince William, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765), to whom the first series is dedicated. The dedication is followed by a list of contents, an introduction in the form of a fable, and the 50 fables, all with an engraved illustration. Gay started to write a second series of fables in 1731, a year before his death. The 16 finished fables were posthumously published 7 years later, in 1638. The illustrations, much larger than those of the first series, were engraved after designs by the well-known French engraver and illustrator Hubert-François Gravelot (1699-1773).Marbled endpaper in first volume detached. Browned, otherwise in very good condition.

Jeremy Taylor
London: R. Royston. THE RULE AND EXERCISES OF HOLY DYING The extremely rare 1651 first edition of the most famous work by English cleric Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667), one of the greatest prose stylists of the English language, often called the "Shakespeare of the Divines". The Rules and Exercises of Holy Dying is usually issued together with The Rule and Exercises of Holy Living, which Taylor published the previous year; but it was first issue here as a separate work. The subtitle reads: "in which are described the means and instruments of preparing our selves and others respectively, for a blessed death, and the remedies against the evils and temptations proper to the state of sicknesse: together with prayers and acts of vertue to be used by sick and dying persons, or by others standing in their attendance; to which are added rules for the visitation of the sick and offices proper for that ministery". The text is the 1651 original. The book was handsomely rebound in about 1909 (as dated in the owner's signature on the second page). The covers are fine leather with a ribbed spine; the inside of the covers are also leather, elaborately decorated; all text edges are gilt. The condition is very good. The covers show minor wear, the only significant flaw being a crack in the top inch of the front spine gutter. The text is firmly bound. An owner bookplate is affixed to the front endpaper. The text has slight soiling, a few water spots, a few light pencil marks; no serious flaw -- really quite well preserved for a text this age. Again, very, very scarce. At present there is no other … [Click Below for Full Description]

Balkan - Micalia [auch Mikalja oder Micaglia], Jacobus [auch Jakov oder Giacomo]
Loretto, Seraphinus [recte Ancona, Beltrano], 1649 [recte, 1651. 8 Bll., 46, 863 S. 8°. Mod. Pp. Erste Ausgabe des ersten großen Wörterbuchs des Kroatischen. - Giacomo Micaglia (1601 - 1654) [Latin: Jacobus Micalia; Jakov Mikalja in Croatian] was an Italian linguist and lexicographer, of Slavic ancestry. .. He said about himself to be `an Italian of Slavic language`. ... Micaglia`s greatest work is `Thesaurus of Slovinian Language and Slovinian Dictionary (where Croatian words are translated in Italian and Latin)`. It was first printed in Loreto in 1649, but a better printing press was needed, so it was completed in Ancona in 1651. The dictionary was a Jesuits project, an instrument to fight the Protestant Reformation and even more the progression of the Muslim faith in the Balkans. t was the first Croatian dictionary, with Croatian (under name of `Illyric` or "Slovinian`) as the starting language (in the very same dictionary, he treats the `terms Croatian, Slovinian and Illyric as synonyms). An Important thing to note is that Micaglia names in his dictionary Croatian language as `Illyric` or `Slovinian`, Italian as `Latin`, which he names as the `students` language` (diacki). The introduction to the dictionary has a `Latin` dedication, a note to the reader in Italian (Al benigno lettore), a presentation of the alphabet and orthography in Latin and Croatian (Od ortographie jezika slovinskoga ili nacina od pisanja), and an Italian grammar in Croatian (Grammatika Talianska). Micaglia explains in the foreword that he chose the Bosnian dialect because `everyone says that the Bo … [Click Below for Full Description]

The petitioners state that if trade was liberalized "there would be twice or thrice as many ships sent every year for Greenland, are now by the Greenland Company... and this nation supplied with a full quantity of fish oyls at cheap rates, without the help of forraigners; yea, and in a few years be able to transport into forraign nations for their supply".
