Horst Bredekamp (Autor)
Oldenbourg Akademieverlag, 1651.
[Click Below for Full Description]

In this work, his most famous, and one of the great books of western political philosophy, he decribes the State as a great artificial monster made up of individual men and the individual's duty to the State. Lyons - Philippi Borde, Laurentii Arnaudand Claudii Rigaud. 1651. Hardcover. Book, A very scarcework byJohn de Lugo (1583-1660), a Spanish Jesuit and Cardinal, was an eminent theologian of the Renaissance. Disputationes Scholasticae, et Morales, De Virtute, et Sacramento Penitentiae. Stem De Suffragiis, et Indulgentis. Opus Confessariis Omnibus Maxime Utile. [Discussions of Scholastic, and Morales, On the Power, he and the sacrament of penance. The Stem of the votes, and his pardon. A work useful to allconfessors. ]In Latin. Reprinted with past mistakes corrected. With a half title, two colour decorative, title and decorative head and tail pieces throughout. It is said that John de Lugo's lectures, even before being printed, were spread by copyists in other countries. When the General of the Society ordered him to print his works, he obeyed and without help had the material for the first three volumes prepared within five years (1633, 1636, 1638). The works of Juan de Lugo, some of which have never been printed, cover nearly the whole field of moral - and dogmatic theology. The first volume, De Incarnatione Domini (Lyons, 1633), of which the short preface is well worth reading to get an idea of de Lugo's method, came out in 1633. It was followed by De sacramentis in genere; De Venerabili Eucharisti Sacramento et de sacrosancto Miss sacrificio (Lyons, 1636); De Virtute et Sacramento poenitenti, de Suffragiis et Indulgentiis (Lyons, 1638); and De justitia et jure (Lyon, 1642), the work on which de Lugo's fame especially rested. In composition of this important treatise, he wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

His only work 'Noctes Atticae' or 'Attic Nights', is a miscellany that 'ranges from literature to law, from wondrous tales to moral philosophy; one of his favorite topics is the Latin language'. (.) The exposition, in a mildly archaizing but never difficult Latin, often takes the form of dialogues with or between culturally eminent persons whom Gellius had known'. It derives its name from the fact of its having been written during the long nights of a winter which the author spent in Attica as a young itinerant student. The Noctes Atticae were exploited by pagans and Christians alike in late antiquity. In medieval florilegia he is much quoted for piquant tal … [Click Below for Full Description]

DIGBY, George
1651. BRISTOL, George Digby, Earl of, and Sir Kenelm Digby. LETTERS BETWEEN THE LD GEORGE DIGBY, AND SR KENELM DIGBY KT. CONCERNING RELIGION. London: Printed for Humphrey Mosely, and are to be sold at his shop, at the sign of the Prince's Arms in St Pauls Church-yard, 1651. First edition, with the final letter dated "Sherburn, March 39, 1639." Small woodcut vignettes on title-page, a crown and rose and a crown and fleur-de-lis, and page [iii], a rose and a thistle. [iv], 132 pp. Collation: A-H8, I4. 14 x 9 cm. A worn and old leather binding, possibly contemporary, with lower board and rear endpapers detached. Scattered marginal notes and bracketing of text in pencil. Complete. (Wing B4768). Although not published until 1651, these letters, a "long discourse" about religion between two of the leading courtiers of their day, were exchanged between 2 November 1638 and 30 March 1639. Lord George Digby (1612-1677), the second Earl of Bristol, was a talented politician, administrator, soldier, and scholar who ultimately failed at each due to his inconsistent and rash temperament. Horace Walpole judged him "a singular person, whose life was contradiction." Sir Kenelm Digby (1603-1665), son of the executed gunpowder plotter Everard Digby, was even more accomplished than his kinsman and, in general, more consistent and controlled. He married the famous beauty Venetia Stanley, whom he met as a child and to whom he was devoted - even after her death. He was Ben Jonson's patron in London, and he associated with Voltaire and other learned men when he lived in France. H … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Clayton
[24] pp 158 John Clayton's case reports for York Assizes in contemporary sheepskin binding with a double blind fillet to the boards and five compartments to the spine. Some loss to leather near corners and an old paper label with number in ink at the top of the spine. Internally complete as called for, inner hinge broken to rear of book with no rear pastedown. An attractively unsophisticated copy of an uncommon book - no copies online at this time. York assizes appear to have been comparatively under-reported at this time, forming part of the Northern Circuit. Published during the Cromwellian Commonwealth, Clayton makes a point in his Epistle Dedicatory of discussing the benefits of the law to the Commonwealth as greater than 'riches and power', an allusion to the uneasy peace that followed the execution of Charles I a couple of years earlier. Clayton himself was a zealous Parliamentarian who had served as Commander of the Northern Association for the Parliamentary army and distinguished himself at the siege of Hull before becoming MP for Lostwithiel in 1659.
