Federico AGNELLI (Milano 1626 - ivi 1702)
1650. Acquaforte, 1645 - 1676, firmata in basso a destra "Federicus Agnellus Fecit Mediol.ni". Etching, 1645 - 1676, signed at lower right "Federicus Agnellus Fecit Mediol.ni". Magnificient example, dark and contrasted, printed on contemporary watermakerd paper, trimmed at margins, some light stains, otherwise in good condition. The beautiful plate belong to an illustrated edition of the "Gerusalemme Liberata" by Torquato Tasso. The cardinal coat of arm, at top left, dates the engraving back to 1645 -1676, during the cardinalate of Benedetto Odescalchi, who on September 21, 1676, became the 240th Pope and took the name of Innocent XI. What seems to be happening is that the outcome of a battle is being decided by a chess to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto"
Etching, 1650 circa, signed at upper left with monogram GB, followed by the surname CASTILONE.Only state. Excellent example, printed on contemporary laid paper, white margins of 0,8 mm circa, with partial and unreadable watermark, in very good condition. This etching is attribued to Catiglione for the presence of the artist’s last name, composed in the same way as his monogram and signature in other works, and similar to the artist’s signature included in his two portrait series. Furthermore, the placement of the signature is analogous. A possible contradiction to this attribution is presented by the strong similarities this etching displays to a series of four works not etched by Castiglione (TIB, 097-100). MERIAN Matthäus sr.
ca. 1650]. Copper engraving, 275 x 350 mm, with a central fold but apparently never bound, previously tipped into a mid-seventeenth century Blaeu atlas. A fine example. [Frankfurt-am Main : Matthäus Merian sr., Matthäus Merian sr. (the elder; 1593-1630) was born in Switzerland but eventually settled in Frankfurt; he was trained as an engraver. He married Maria Magdalena de Bry, daughter Johann Theodore de Bry and grand-daughter of Theodore de Bry, both highly influential publishers of travel and other illustrated books. In 1623 Merian took control of the business, taking it to new heights. He continued to publish editions of Theodore de Bry's Grand Voyages and Petits Voyages, first issued in 1590, but Merian was also famous for his Topographia, a multi-volume series describing the regions of Germany, richly illustrated with town plans and views, as well as maps, and his small folio world atlases, containing maps and views of all parts of the world. This is a detailed bird's-eye plan of Valetta, with its extensive fortifications, taken from an imaginary vantage point over the sea. An inset gives a simplified map of Malta and Gozo.

Nicolas BEREY
Molto rara. Giuseppe CALETTI detto il Cremonese (Cremona 1595 - Ferrara 1660)
"Acquaforte e bulino, 1650 circa, monogrammato in lastra, in basso a sinistra I.C.F. [Click Below for Full Description]

Pier Francesco MOLA (Como 1612 - Roma 1666)
1650. Acquaforte e punta secca, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Foglio molto raro. Etching with drypoint, signed on plate at lower left. Example in the only known state. Beautiful proof, on contemporary laid paper, no watermark, irregularly trimmed at the platemark, small perfectly repaired areas at the corners, in very good conditions. This theme is taken from Ovidius' Metamorphoses. Juno is jealous of the princess Io who, in turn, is loved by Jupiter. For this reason the goddes transforms Io into a heifer and places her unde … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto"
Acquaforte, circa 1650-55, in basso a destra. G. BENEDs. CASTILIONUS/ genvensis in Pin. Etching, circa 1650-55, inscribed, lower right: G. BENEDs. CASTILIONUS/ genvensis in Pin. Example of the first state, of two described by Bellini. Magnificent proof, rich in shades, printed on contemporary laid paper, with thin margin, in excellent condition. Castiglione's Genoese origin is indicated by the word 'genuensis' in the signature on this etching that shows both his stylistic debt to Rembrandt's prints of the 1630s and 40s and his own interest in subjects based on classical literature and symbol. His depictions of scenes of magical transformation may have been partly prompted by an interest … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gerolamo IMPERIALE Genova o Napoli 1630 circa - 1660 circa)
Opera estremamente rara. " Etching, the artist's signature is missing. Magnificent proof, with good contrast and rich tonalities, on contemporary laid paper, no watermark, trimmed at the platemark or with very narrow margins, in excellent conditions. Gerolamo Imperiale descended from a family belonging to the Genoese aristocracy which included collectors, dealers an patrons of the arts. His biography is quite sketchy; we only know that he lived for about thirty years during which his contribution to the graphic arts was limited to only four different works. According to Bartsch, these ""were made with exceptionally good taste and noteworthy technical expertise"". A very rare print." Bartsch vol. XX, pag. 71, 3.

FRYER (FREYER), John.
[8], 566, [26] pp.First and only edition of a Dutch translation of a highly accurate account of India and Persia, with numerous anecdotes and told with a fine sense of humour. The account is based on the experiences of John Fryer (ca. 1650-1733), a British East Indian Company surgeon who arrived in India in 1673, spending time at Masulipatam and Madras on the Coromandel Coast and at Bombay and Surat on the West Coast, with trips to Gokarna, Karwar, Goa, and Junnar. From 1677 to 1679 he travelled Persia, visiting the southern parts of the country and giving an extensive description of Isfahan. In 1677 he sailed through the Strait of Hormuz and visited Muscat, commenting on the city's Imam, religion and merchandise. At the end of 1677 Fryer left Isfahan and returned to India, where he remained until 1681. The text is divided into eight "letters", each devoted to a different region and a different period of his travels, describing the flora and fauna, religion, architecture, climate, government, etc. Fryer's writings "display a lively curiosity, which, sharpened by his scientific training, produces accurate observations in geology, meteorology, and all aspects of natural history. Fryer also provides some shrewd insights into the nature of Mughal government in the later years of Awrangzeb's reign (r. 1658-1707), ... His professional background makes Fryer a valuable commentator upon contemporary medicine as practiced in Surat" (Franklin).Good copy, a smudge in the gutter of the first few leaves, some occasional minor thumbing and a faint waterstain throughout the lower margin, … [Click Below for Full Description]

DAMHOUDER, Joost de (1507-1581)
Rotterdam, Pieter van Waesberge 1650. -49. 2 works in 1 volume. 4to. [VIII],264,3-59 (wanting divisional title); [XXXVI],592,[31]p. With portrait of the author on both titles, 56 woodcut illustrations in the text of the first work and 14 full-page engravings in the second work. Contemp. overlapping vellum. Fine copy. A treatise on criminal law, the first work of its kind published outside Italy, that exercised a lasting influence in Europe. It gives an overview of sixteenth-century legislation, prosecution and punishment of offences like homicide, blasphemy, mutiny, forgery, burglary, adultery, rape, corruption, adultery, incest, sodomy, arson, etc. All this is illustrated by fine woodcuts showing scenes from criminal procedure and justice, including torture. Damhouder asserted that a single indication of guilt was sufficient for torture to be applied to achieve a confession, though he did recognize that too much torture can produce false confessions. It is highly interesting not only for the history of legal customs but also for the social conditions connected with these crimes. An important part is dedicated to witchcraft, according to Damhouder 'a heinous crime that went unpunished too often because of the ignorance of magistrates'. This is largely based upon Grillandi's Tractatus de hereticis et sortilegiis'. Many authors have pointed out that much of Damhouder's work was based upon, if not plagiarized, from a manuscript on criminal law by Philips Wielant not published before 1872. First published in 1554 in Latin and the same year in French and Dutch translation by the … [Click Below for Full Description]
