USSHER, JAMES. [Jacobus Usserius]
London: J. Flesher, 1650. First edition. FIRST EDITIONS, OFFERED TOGETHER WITH THE DEFINITIVE THIRD (GENEVA) EDITION, OF ARCHBISHOP USSHER'S FAMOUS ANALYSIS OF THE TIMELINE OF HISTORY, FIXING THE DATE OF THE CREATION OF THE UNIVERSE AT OCTOBER 23, 4004 B.C. USSHER'S DATING OF BIBLICAL EVENTS, INCLUDING THE CREATION, GAINED WIDESPREAD ACCEPTANCE, WAS INCORPORATED FOR ALMOST THREE CENTURIES IN MARGINAL GLOSSES TO VARIOUS EDITIONS OF THE BIBLE, AND IS STILL ACCEPTED AS VALID BY MANY "YOUNG EARTH" CREATIONISTS. James Ussher (1581-1656) was, from 1625, the Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of Ireland. He played a key role in the seventeenth-century struggle to reconcile the theological differences between the (Protestant) Church of Ireland and the Church of England. He was also noted for his scholarship; "[h]ere the range of his achievements was extraordinary -- spanning the Bible, theology, patristics, Irish history, ancient history, ancient languages, chronology, and the calendar. When [John] Selden called his friend 'learned to miracle'..., he was, of course, exaggerating, but only slightly" (Dictionary of National Biography). Today, he is best known for the two works offered here, which pieced together a timeline of history based on a careful correlation of evidence taken from biblical and extra-biblical sources, and concluded that the world was created in the year 4004 B.C. in the proleptic Julian calendar. Of course, in the three and a half centuries that have passed since the first publication of these two works in 1650 and 1654, a wide range of paleontological, radiochemi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alexander Read
London: printed by E. G. for Richard Thrale, 1650. Condition: Good binding. Small Quarto. [8], [1]-161, 164-270, [6], 3-[206], [4], 1-[44]. According to Wing's collation, this copy appears to missing a few leaves including: 2 preliminary leaves; leaf B1 (page 1/2) of Book II; blank 2D4 following page [206] of Book II; page 44 concludes with a catchword, presumably there are as many as 8 pages lacking according to Wing, presumably an index. Rebound in early 19th century sheep with corners and marbled paper over boards; spine desiccated; separation beginning at the front hinge; textblock is sunken in the middle so that the central signatures are pushing out towards the fore-edge (images available); the textblock was tightly trimmed at the time of rebinding and there is occasional mild loss of text, usually just the shoulder notes suffer, but on a few occasions the text itself; still quite readable as any loss is minimal; text is toned throughout; names and early doodling on the verso of the title page; previous owner name on the front pastedown; endpapers show evidence of moisture exposure but there are no distinct tidelines in the textblock; while this copy has some challenges, it remains an extraordinarily scarce book; digital images can be made available upon request. The aim of the book is to provide advice on how to effectively manage these emotions. Nicholas Caussin (1583 -1651) was a French Jesuit and Louis XIII's confessor between the months of March and December, 1637. After a falling out with Cardinal Richelieu, he was exiled to Quimper. There is controversy over the reason behind this dispute, but new research by Philippe Seller and Gerad Ferreyrolles have claimed it was due to his strong religious oppositions to hell's existence. In 1643, after the death of his banisher, he returned, and was asked to form an opinion of the Moral Theology of Jesuits. Collated incomplete, lacking a plate. CONDITION In a quarter morocco binding. Contains very scarce publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. Contains fold out plate and demonstrative vignettes as called for. The second English edition of the work. First published in Latin as Clavis Apocalyptica in 1627. The first English edition was published in 1643. The second edition is the first edition to contain the additional work 'A Conjecture Concerning Gog and Magog in the Revelation' who, according to the Book of Ezekiel, are the enemies of God's people. Joseph Mede was an English biblical scholar. This work, his magnum opus, Clavis Apocalyptica (The Key of the Revelation) was a hugely influential work on the interpretation of the Book of Revelation. The work predicts the end of the world by 1716, by which time the Jewish population would be miraculously converted to Christianity in preparation for the second coming. The work drew heavily upon Eastern thought, more specifically understanding the Apocalypse through a book of ancient dream interpretation attributed to Achmer. Those who followed Mede's chronology include Isaac Newton and Thomas Goodwin. The English Edition was translated by Richard More. More was the MP for Bishop's Castle, and was a well-known puritan who wrote heavily on puritan themes. In 1643 More translated the first English edition of Clavis Apocalyptica. He died later that year. A fascinating and extremely scarce work. CONDITION Rebound in brown crushed morocco. Externally very sm … [Click Below for Full Description]

PLEMP, Joan J. (Jan Jansz.?).
1650. A detailed, extensive and well-illustrated manuscript handbook of the art of navigation, probably prepared for publication but certainly never published, written by "Joan J. Plemp" whom we tentatively identify as Jan Jansz. Plemp (d. 1650), a Rotterdam official who oversaw the surveying of the city. The 178-page text, mostly in the form of questions and answers (like a catechism), is divided into 6 chapters. They provide detailed information and tables of data for making calendrical calculations; the use of the compass, including names and positions of important stars and calculating corrections for magnetic declination; tables of ephemerides giving the daily positions of the sun; determination of latitude and longitude by day and by night; calculating distances; solar declinations following Tycho Brahe; and much more. The colour illustrations include a splendid equinoctial compass sundial for keeping time at sea almost a century before Harrison's chronometer; and rectangular quadrants. The dials aid in calendrical calculations and determining latitude. The successful end of the Netherlands' Eighty-Years' War of independence from Habsburg Spain in 1648, meant that numerous sailors would be coming home from the war and many would seek work in the VOC, WIC and other commercial trading ships, which set a high value on navigational skills. Even though the Netherlands had one of the highest literacy rates in the world, the sailors who needed to or wished to learn navigation were not always well-educated, so practical guides assuming little knowledge of mathematics were esse … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAYLY, Thomas
London: J.G, 1650. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare, first edition of Thomas Bayly's 'Herba Parietis' - a fascinating romance novel written while Bayly was imprisoned. A few of his writings offended the English authorities which landed him in Newgate prison. This 1650 first edition, printed in folio, features an impressive full-page frontispiece engraving of Newgate Prison, where Bayly was held. This famous Holden edition is quite popular and extremely rare. The story itself describes the Roman exiles in 6th-century northern Africa. It is curious though, the title has little to nothing to do with the content of this work, and is often thought to be titled as such to bring Bayly hope or good cheer while in prison. MENAGE
Paris: Augustin Courbé, 1650. First edition of the first French etymological dictionary, reprinted in 1694 in an enlarged edition in folio, and again in 1750 in 2 volumes folio; 4to, pp. [16], xxxviii, [2], 845, [1], [28] indexes, approbation, and errata; engraved vignette title page after Picart; 19th century quarter brown calf over marbled boards; edges rubbed and a bit worn, but in all a good, sound copy. Menage (1613-1692), "a man of vast erudition and keen intuition," was one of the few in his day who had first hand knowledge of Old French and the early stages of other Romance languages (which he had gleaned from his studies of law and early legal documents) and was uniquely qualified to carry out such an etymological undertaking. But his sarcasm lead to his expulsion from the French Academy; he had many enemies and suffered under the satire of Moliere and Boileau (see Holmes, History of the French Language, 1938, p. 90; and Ency. Brit., 11th ed). [Attributes: First Edition]
