Bound in full green morocco with triple gilt fillets on boards; spine elaborately gilt in compartments with five raised bands, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Ex Libris Karl u. Thilde Wagner. Elzevir, the name of a celebrated family of Dutch printers belonging to the 17th century. The family originally came from Louvian, and there Louis, who first made the name Elzevir famous, was born in 1540. He learned the business of a bookbinder, and having been compelled in 1580, on account of his Protestantism and his adherence to the cause of the insurgent provinces, to leave his native country, he established himself as bookbinder and bookseller in Leiden. Of his five sons, Matthieu, Louis, Gilles, Joost and Bonaventure, who all adopted their father's profession, Bonaventure, who was born in 1583, is the most celebrated. The fame of Elzevir editions rests chiefly on the works issued by this firm. Their small editions in 12mo, 16mo and 24mo commonly stand out for the elegance of design, neatness, clearness and regularity of type. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Giovanni Battista Della Porta
Rouen: Rothomagi, 1650. De Humana Physiognomonia Libri IV. Dark brown contemporary leather with gilt ooled design and lettering on spine, marbled page edges. Woodcut illustrations throughout featuring comparisons between animal and human faces and expressions, beautifully detailed with some repeating images. 557 pages combined with index. In this treatise, the author attempted to establish a scientific basis for the ancient art of physiognomy, basing a judgement of a person's character on their outer appearance. The idea has come in and out of style multiple times over the centuries, with its use by authors as a character device, and notably by when it was practiced by "mountebanks and vagabonds" in the Middle Ages. In this iteration, Porta uses animal examples to compare with illustrations of various facial expressions and appearances. Binding complete and intact, leather has some repairs. Spine crackled with chips and wear to edges, hinges starting. Small holes in a few scattered pages (result of worming), a few pages toned with mild to moderate foxing throughout. Good. Latin.

Carlo MARATTI (Camerano 1625 - Roma 1713)
Acquaforte, circa 1650, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra.
Etching, 1650 circa, signed at upper left with monogram GB, followed by the surname CASTILONE.Only state. Excellent example, printed on contemporary laid paper, white margins of 0,8 mm circa, with partial and unreadable watermark, in very good condition. This etching is attribued to Catiglione for the presence of the artist’s last name, composed in the same way as his monogram and signature in other works, and similar to the artist’s signature included in his two portrait series. Furthermore, the placement of the signature is analogous. A possible contradiction to this attribution is presented by the strong similarities this etching displays to a series of four works not etched by Castiglione (TIB, 097-100). Davila, Arrigo (Enrico) Cateriono; Giacomo Marcello
Venetia: Presso Paolo Baglioni, 1650. Thick Octavo. [23] 1056 pages, Italian Text. Enrico Caterino Davila's work influenced Clarendon in his writing of the English Civil Wars. He consider Davila as the most worthy to stand besides the ancients [a reference to Tacitus]. Clarendon saw that his account of the French Civil Wars paralleled what had happened in England; in fact, he wrote in his own account that Davila's was written "as our's should be written". Sir Philip Warwick wrote of John Hampden, "He was very well read in history; and I remember the first time I ever saw that of D'Avild of the Civiil Warrs of France, it was lent me under the title of Mr. Hampden's Vade Mecum; and I believe no copy was liker an originall than that rebellion was like ours." (Warwick, Memoirs of the Reigne of King Charles I (London, 1701). For Clarendon, Davila's work was how a political narrative should be written. In other words, he saw history of Davila as an equally Tacitist and Machiavellian interpretation of royal policy under Catherine de Medici, Henry III and Henry IV. The text is printed in Italic except for titles, summaries and index. The title vignette is an armorial etching. Bound in full vellum, raised bands, title in brown ink, some occasional scattered browning or foxing, upper board warping as usual with stiff vellum. A very good copy.

London: Phil. Stephens, 1650. London: Phil. Stephens. Fair with no dust jacket. 1650. Second Edition. Leather. . Pagination is [16] 123 [1] 137 [18] including the scarce ad for other books by Mede. T1 and T2 are separated by a2 and a1 (the ads) out of order, but all are present and complete except for the lacking folding plate. OCLC 13659596, ESTC 006076336. There are the numerous owner inscriptions (the first is dated May 3, 1651) and a stain on two center pages of the book, otherwise clean and unmarked. Paper is toned, book block is fragile but holding. Nice head and tail pieces throughout. This is the 1650 edition of Mede's famous work on the Apocalypse, which predicted the imminent end of the world. The book was a widely influential work on the interpretation of the biblical book of Revelation which was gripping Protestant Christians at the time. The book caused an uproar in the New World. Cotton Mather (1663-1728) contested Mede's claims, and The Rev. Nicholas Noyes (1647-1717) [of the Salem witch trials] "shared his displeasure with Mede's conceit, in his election sermon New Englands Duty and Interest (Boston, 1698) and defended the Puritan experiment in the New World." This appears to be the Rev. Noyes's personal copy of the book upon which this sermon was based. There are two spots where he has written "Nicholas Noyes, his book." There are also notes on the blanks at front and back which look quite a bit like Noyes' hand, based on the signature. The notes are scholarly comparisons of passages in Mede's book to passages in Scripture. I … [Click Below for Full Description]

Literatuur: Frederik Muller, De Nederlandsche geschiedenis in platen, nr. 1981. Ook door Muller (1863-1870) al "zeldzaam" bevonden. This "violently anti-Jacobean tract" (ODNB) was attributed to politician and reputed satirist Sir Anthony Weldon (d. 1648) within a year of its publication. "Despite the somewhat perilous uncertainty of evidence for Weldon's role as a satirist, the publications with which he is commonly associated have enjoyed enormous popularity and influence on later historians. Sir Walter Scott's republication of The Court and Character in The Secret History of the Court of James I (1811) revived them, and modern historians have frequently had cause to lament the way in which 'Weldon' succeeded in distorting history.
