SANSON D'ABBEVILLE, Nicholas (1600-1667)
Paris: Pierre Mariette, 1650. THE FIRST MAPS TO USE THE SINUSOIDAL PROJECTION Six engraved maps with original hand outline color: each 151/2" by 211/2" References: Rodney W. Shirley, The Mapping of the World (London, 1983), n. 390; Philip D. Burden, The Mapping of North America: A List of Printed Maps 1511-1670 (Rickmansworth, 1996), 375-6. The maps of Nicolas Sanson were the first to show the sinusoidal projection, sometimes called the Sanson-Flamsteed or the Mercator equal-area projection. This form provides a simple equal area map projection and reflects the fact that lines of latitude are shorter nearer the poles than those near the equator. To achieve this, it keeps the central meridian straight and preserve distances along it, while transforming other meridians into curves; this has the effect of distorting shapes, in particular those towards the sides of the map, but helps remind the viewer of the curvature of the earth's surface. Sanson is best remembered today for his groundbreaking maps of the New World, in particular his famous map of North America, which is included here in its rare first state. The first map to show all five Great Lakes, it stands as a fitting testimony to Sanson's great cartographic and scholarly talent. In seventeenth-century France, Sanson's skills earned him a remarkably high status for a mapmaker. He served as the Royal Geographer, tutored both Louis XIII and Louis XIV in geography, and the former even made Sanson a councilor of state. Fine sets by Sanson such as this one are extremely desirable and difficult to obtain. Each of … [Click Below for Full Description]

RHODES, Alexandre De [1591-1660].
Rome: Giuseppe Luna, 1650. small 4to. pp. 8 p.l., 326, [1 leaf]errata. double-page engraved map. woodcut printer's device on title. woodcut ornaments & initials. contemporary vellum (slight worming to lower spine, lacking front flyleaf, front hinge cracked). First Edition of the first separately published description of the whole of Vietnam, containing what appears to be the earliest detailed map of North Vietnam. It is preceded by Cristóforo Borri's Relatione della nuova missione.della Cocincina (1631), which dealt only with South Vietnam. In addition to presenting a first-hand account of missionary activity in the country from 1627 to 1646, Rhodes gives details respecting the manners and customs of the native inhabitants, politics and government, natural resources and commerce, &c. French and Latin translations were published in 1652. Rhodes, a French Jesuit, was assigned to the missions of the East Indies and spent several years in Goa, Malacca, Batavia, and Macao, before proceeding to Cochin China (South Vietnam) in 1624, where fellow Jesuits had been working since 1615. He arrived with five colleagues under the leadership of Gabriel De Matos. Within six months he had learnt Cochinchinois, invented the quoc-ngu, by which Vietnamese could be represented by Roman characters, and evangelized much of the region between the coast and the Annamese highlands. (Howgego) In 1627 he proceeded to Tongking (North Vietnam), where he met with equal success, reputedly personally converting over 6000 souls, until he was expelled in 1630. He spent the next ten years in Macao making occa … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANSON D'ABBEVILLE, Nicholas (1600-1667)
Paris, 1650. THE FIRST MAP TO DEPICT ALL FIVE GREAT LAKES The first map to depict all five Great Lakes Engraving with original outline color: 175/8" x 231/4" References: Louis C. Karpinski, Maps of Famous Cartographers Depicting North America (Amsterdam, 1977), 89, Plate VIII; Seymour I. Schwartz & Ralph E. Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America (New York, 1980), Plate 61; Phillip D. Burden, The Mapping of North America: A List of Printed Maps 1511-1670 (Rickmansworth, 1996), 375-377. A leading exemplar of the French school of seventeenth-century cartography, Nicolas Sanson is widely regarded as the founder of modern geography and it is generally held that the so-called "Great Age" of French cartography originated with his publications. This exquisite, hand-colored map of America is a prime example of Sanson's cartographic mastery. "Amerique Septentrionale" was first published in 1650 and was a monumental production in that it was the first map ever to illustrate the five great lakes in recognizable form. French explorers were the most active in North America, during the seventeenth century, and this map is the most exact and up-to-date record of their activities in the continent's interior. It is the first printed map to depict the complete extent of Jesuit exploration and mapping, and for Canada, represents the first major advance on Champlain's map of 1632. In keeping with the geographical theories of the period, Sanson's map shows California as an island. This common misconception was not officially disproved until 1747. In this version of "Amerique Septentri … [Click Below for Full Description]

Allard, Carel (1648-1709)
Amsterdam, 1650. MAGNIFICENT ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR STUDY FOR CAREL ALLARD'S "HAVANA" Ink wash and pencil on paper, n.d. Inscription at lower center of drawing, "Havana" and at reverse of frame, "Havana Harbour/with Moro Castle/circa 1650/Goudstikker Gallery./Amsterdam". Sheet: approx. 7 1/2 x 9 1/2" Matted and framed Original drawing for "Orbis habitabilis oppida et Vestitus, centenario complexa ... Des bewoonden Waerelds steden en dragten, in een honderd-getal begreepen." Amsterdam: Carel Allard, c.1695. "Orbis habitabilis" is an interesting book on towns and costumes. The plates were by Aldert Meyer and Thomas Doesbergh. Printed sources have been identified for most, if not all, of the engravings, but the work still achieves a notable homogenity, owing to the fact that Allard himself closely supervised the engraving of the plates. The images in these series are excellent in design and execution, and wide-ranging and comprehensive in subject matter. In many cases a plate of a town is followed by one showing the costume of the inhabitants with the town in the background, which is shown in the present work. Allard is considered to be the first compiler of a townbook to couple the plates this way. "Orbis habitabilis" comprises 28 views of European towns (including 4 costumes), 24 Asian towns (including 4 costumes), 24 African towns (including 6 costumes) and 24 American towns (including 8 costumes). SAAVEDRA FAXARDO (DE) DIEGO.
Coloniae, 1650. Cm. 13,2, pp. (12) 795 (5) + 2 ccb. L'A.
