PERELLE

Jonston, J.
Frankfurt am Main, M. Merian, 1650. Folio (34.2 x 20.8 cm). 78, [i] pp. 18 [of 20] engraved plates. Later paper boards, spine with printed paper label.l This is the first edition of the fourth book of Jonston's famous "Historia Naturalis", usually not found separately but, rather, combined with the fishes and other water-bound vertebrates. The complete work depicted all known animals and this is the single part devoted to marine invertebrates. This copy includes the fine plates of all Mollusca and Crustacea. Linnaeus and others later employed many of the names used here for their genera. The last two plates, not included, are on holothurians (Echinodermata). Complete copies are very rare. Some faint water stains in a corner, but most engravings with a strong impression and clean. In all, a good copy. Nissen ZBI, 2135.

ROSSI, Giovanni Giacomo de' (1627-1691, publisher)
[Rome: "Gio. Jacomo Rossi", circa 1650]. Oblong small folio. (10 1/4 x 15 3/4 inches). Engraved throughout and printed on laid paper watermarked with an anchor and initials LM within a circle surmounted by a six pointed star. Title with dedication to Andrea Corsini within an elaborate pictorial border, 41 plates engraved by Maggi, Corduba, Barrièreon and others on 25 leaves. (Minor marginal staining, discrete blindstamp to margin of three leaves). 18th century mottled calf, expertly rebacked to style. A lovely illustrated work depicting the famed Baroque fountains of Rome and its environs. Rossi, the son of the founder of the most important printing press of 17th century Rome, was active between 1645 and 1690 and issued during that time this collection of views of fountains by a number of earlier engravers. The work seems to have been issued with a variety of plates and in various formats. The plate count of the present copy corresponds to the Berlin copy. Among the fountains illustrated are Bernini's fountain at St. Peter's Square, his famed Triton fountain in Piazza Barberini, Giambologna's monumental Fountain of Neptune in Bologna and the water theater at Villa Belvedere. Berlin Kat 3599.

[Sanderson, Sir William (1586?-1676)]
London: Printed for Henry Seile, over against St Dunstans Church in Fleet Street. 1650. First Edition. Hardcover. Nineteenth century catspaw calf, boards with double ruled gilt border, contrasting spine lable bearing gilt titles, marbled endpapers, note on title page identifying A.W. as Anthony Weldon, damp mark to top fifth of pp16-48 but text remains clear and bright, small loss from lower corner of leaf A2 not affecting text. 8vo, A-A4 B-O6. Wing S645. , Sir William Sanderson's major achievement lay in his historical writings, which, like most historical writing from the middle of the 17th century was partisan in nature.By his own account Sanderson suffered in the Royalist cause during the civil wars and was knighted by King Charles II at the restoration. This work, Sanderson's most famous, was written in response to "The Court and Character of King James," a memoir written by Anthony Weldon and published postumously. Weldon had been a courtier in the court of King James but had become disaffected, becoming a member of the Kentish parliamentary county committee. Aulicus appeared anonymously but Sanderson admitted his authorship in the preface of his later and more substantial work, "Compleat History of the Lives and Reigns of Mary Queen of Scotland, and of her Son James" (1656). , 8vo , [viii] 205 [1] pp .
