Saavedra-Faxardo, Didaco
Apud Constantinum Munich, Coloniae [i.e., Cologne], 1650. Engraved title page, and 103 engraved emblems, of which 101 are sequentially numbered. [24], 795, [5] pp. 1 vols. 12mo. The Emblems of Power. Fine copy of this little series of discourses on how to conduct oneself as a Christian ruler, originally intended for the Spanish infante, Baltasar, son of King Philip IV. Each new chapter is introduced by a symbolic engraving in the form of a coat of arms, with the Latin motto announcing the theme. the book first appeared in 1640 in Spanish and was immensely popular, and the author himself translated the text to Latin, and in subsequent edition, added one or two more engravings to the sequence. The first and the last engraving (each out of the numbered sequence) are most interesting. The first, with a motto "Ex fumo in lucem" is an exquisite image of a printing press; and the final engraving, beneath a brief obituary of the author ("Magni Politici), shows skull, a tomb, and other images of death beneath the heading "Ludibria Mortis." The engravings themselves are exquisitely wrought, and, particularly in this copy, are bright with excellent detail. Saavedra was a lawyer and diplomat in the service of Spain, who died in 1648. Contemporary calf, red leather spine label. BEAUTIFUL copy, text and emblems immaculate and crisp Engraved title page, and 103 engraved emblems, of which 101 are sequentially numbered. Folio (32.6 x 19.6 cm) with 249 engraved plates and six engraved title pages (four resembling frontispieces, engraved by Matthias Merian). Part I (no date, but 1650) 232 [iv] pp., 80 plates; Part III (AND) Part II (1653) 200, [vii]; 40, [iii] pp., 40 [28, 12] plates; Part V (no date, but 1650) (AND) part IV (1650) 228; 78; [xii] pp., 67 [47, 20] plates; Part VI (1650). 227, [vii] pp. 62 plates. Contemporary uniform full mottled calf. Spines with six raised bands, compartments with rich gilt floral patterns and two green morocco labels with gilt titles. A nice set in the rare first edition of Jonston's famous "Historiae naturalis" depicting all then "known" animals including insects, snakes, "dragons", shells, birds, etc. This is the Frankfurt edition, which is much rarer than the second edition that was printed in Amsterdam (1657). With the fine plates of such animals as an elephant with its driver, famous different horses, a stranded sperm whale, but also the more dramatic "draco's" depicted after "aldro" (Aldrovandus) and the Hydra with seven heads. Most plates are quite accurate and the animals depicted are easily identifiable to the species level. Some, however, are rather vague; perhaps composites or entirely mythological. The "serpentibus" is bound after the "insectibus", the "exanvibus aqvaticis" after the "piscibus" (as usual). The part on snakes and dragons, and the one on molluscs, have a "regular" title page with a large vignette; all the others have a frontispiece-like title page, with the title a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Guericke, Otto Von
Amsterdam: Johanned Jansson Waesberge. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE GREAT SCIENTIFIC CLASSICS: "Describes the invention of the air pump and the famous experiment with the Magdeburg hemispheres, in which two teams of eight horses were employed in an attempt to pull apart two copper hemispheres from which the air had been withdrawn. Guericke also describes the invention of the first electrical machine, which generated the first visible and audible electric charges" (Honeyman). "In 1650 Guericke constructed the first air pump, which he used to create a vacuum in various containers. He showed that sound would not travel in a vacuum, and furthermore that a vacuum would not support combustion or animal life. In 1654 Guericke gave an impressive demonstration in front of the emperor Ferdinand III, of the force of atmospheric pressure. Two identical copper hemispheres 12 feet (3.66 m) in diameter were joined together. When the air was pumped out, 16 horses could not pull them apart although when the air reentered the hemispheres they fell apart by themselves. He also showed that 20 men could not hold a piston in a cylinder once the air had been evacuated from one end of it... In 1663 he built the first electrical friction machine by rotating a sulfur globe against a cloth... The results of these and other experiments were published in his Experimental nova Magdeburgica de vacuo spatio (1672; New Magdeburg Experiments Concerning Empty Space)" (Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists). The magnificent large folding plate of the great public experiment wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

TEIXEIRA FEO [or Feio; or Feyo], Bento.
Lisbon, Na Officina Craesbeeckiana, 1650. Small 4°, disbound in a folding case of antique quarter calf over marbled boards, flat spine with crimson morocco lettering-piece, gilt letter. Woodcut initials. In good to very good condition. (2 ll.), 52 pp. *** ORIGINAL EDITION of one of the narratives that later comprised the História trágico-marítima; extremely rare. As with all of these Portuguese shipwreck accounts from the mid-sixteenth to the mid-seventeenth century, it was later produced in a counterfeit eighteenth-century edition. Boxer noted, "I have never seen a copy of this first edition and have taken the description from the História da literatura portuguesa ilustrada, III, 214" ("An Introduction to the História trágico-marítima," in Miscelânea de estudos em honra do Prof. Hernani Cidade, p. 86, no. 17A). In some corrections and clarifications to his previous article, Boxer refers to a copy in the Torre do Tombo, gives the collation (which agrees with ours) and calls it "excessively rare" (Quaderni portoghesi V [Pisa 1979], 107). Innocêncio and Figanière also knew only of the Torre do Tombo copy. The Visconde de Azevedo, mistaking the counterfeit edition for the original, reprinted the former on his private press in a limited edition of four copies at Porto in 1865.The Portuguese vessels Sacramento and Nossa Senhora de Atalaya set sail from Goa together in February 1647. Neither was in good repair, and both were wrecked off the coast of Natal, 30 June and 4 July 1647. A fine copy. (24), 574 pp. ¶ First abridged edition of Rawleigh's highly influential and widely read work 'The History of the World' (1614).This abbreviated edition, published posthumously, was intended for the "poorer citizens [who] could not afford the expensive folio volume in which the history was published." (Middle-class Culture in Elizabethan England, p. 325).Rawleigh himself states: "This Epitome hath this three fold advantage; it is more portable, more legible, and more vendible, then the great Book: This may bee a pocket companion, and it is soon read over; for everie one will not take pains to read great volumes, and manie cannot for want of leasure. There is also divers that have three of four shillings to bestow on this, which have not twentie or thirtie to impend upon the great Book." (From the preface to the present work). PERELLE

Later paper boards, spine with printed paper label.l This is the first edition of the fourth book of Jonston's famous "Historia Naturalis", usually not found separately but, rather, combined with the fishes and other water-bound vertebrates. The complete work depicted all known animals and this is the single part devoted to marine invertebrates. This copy includes the fine plates of all Mollusca and Crustacea. Linnaeus and others later employed many of the names used here for their genera. The last two plates, not included, are on holothurians (Echinodermata). Complete copies are very rare.
