LA CHAMBRE, Marin Cureau De (1594-1669)
Pierre Rocolet, Paris, 1650. (9 1/4 x 7 inches). [6], 340, [6]pp. Engraved printer's device on title-page, engraved head-piece and initial on the dedication leaf, 26 engraved illustrations (including one full-page). Contemporary mottled calf, expertly rebacked to style, spine gilt with raised bands, red morocco lettering piece First edition of an important work of optics and the musical nature of the refraction of color. La Chambre, a protege of Cardinal de Richelieu, served as physician to Chancelier Seguier and Louis XIII, and entered the Academie Royale in 1666. The present work was instrumental in the development of French mathematician Pierre de Fermat's eponymous principle, as well as the experiments by Newton which led to his publication of Opticks in 1704. Following Aristotle in deriving a link between the color specturm and musical theory, La Chambre theorized all colors being encompasses within white light and arranged colors over two octaves (with the seven colors of Aristotle at successive fourths, fifths and octaves). Thus arranged symmetrically, the "scale" could be read in either direction, both up and down, with white as the highest or lowest notes. La Chambre hoped to establish a universal theory of color and musical harmony; i.e. if a musical interval was dissonant, the colors it represented would similarly clash. In Newton's Opticks, this parallel between the color spectrum and a musical scale was further refined. A second edition of this work would be published in 1662; the first edition is scarce. Potter P.
[Amsterdam], Nicolaes Visscher, ca. 1650. Oblong folio (18.6 x 24.2 cm). Title page, and seven other engravings (each measuring ca. 14 x 17 cm), numbered 1-8 in the lower right corner outside the printed frame. Later blind quarter vellum over marbled boards. A complete suite - with wide margins - of eight lively images of quite probably the same individual jaguar (Panthera onca), a species native to South and Central America. Potter’s drawings of this species have often been misidentified as those of a leopard (Panthera pardus), see e.g. the British Museum Collection database. Indeed, the leopard seems a more likely candidate, being found in Africa and Eurasia, however, although the figured animal resembles the Persian or Caucasian subspecies in having widely spaced rosettes, the inclusion of spots within the rosettes clearly shows that this is a New World animal. Moreover, it is far more likely that Potter (1625-1654; a contemporary of Rembrandt and Vermeer, who died at the age of 28 from tuberculosis) saw a specimen imported from Brazil than one from the Iranian region, as the first Dutch West India Company (1621-1674) was busy exploring Brazil - trading with north-western Asia at that time was minimal. Potter himself never visited Brazil. Piso and Marcgrave, in their Historia naturalis Brasiliae (Leiden, 1648), figured the same species, but far more sketchily, as if they had never seen it alive and nearby. Potter’s images seem to be the first accurate renderings, after nature, of this impressive animal, showing its behaviour. Potter was a favourite of the Dutch … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bayly's response is quite amusing: "was there ever such a Sir Jarvis Simple knowne as this Fellow makes himself?" Title page in red and black; additional title page, engraved. Engraved initials and headpieces. Simple black border to the text. Bookplate of Henry Devenish Harben, a British barrister, politician, and major supporter of women's suffrage. Complete series of 6 unnumbered etched prints, including the title-print, showing a hearth with a richly decorated
Interesting and important early collection of 11 very rare architectural print series (with a few additional prints from other series bound with them) giving in total 120 engraved and etched plates of churches, other buildings, portals, altars, mantelpieces, ceilings and wall panels, alcoves, pulpits, architectural decorations (including helmets, military insignia, decorated borders, friezes, masks), fountains and grottoes, mainly in Paris and surroundings. The prints are etched and engraved by the best and most famous artists in Paris in the 1650s and 1660s: Jean Le Pautre, Jean Marot ('Le grand Marot'), Pierre Cottart, Jean Boisseau, Antoine Pierretz and Francesco Fanelli. All but Boisseau's were published and printed by the two most famous printers of engravings and etchings: Pierre Mariette II and Jacques van Merle. None of the 11 series is demonstrably later than 1661, though some may be later in the 1660s. The fact that each print series at least generally shows a consistent paper stock and the fact that the endleaves show a watermark contemporary with the latest print series strongly suggests that each series comes from a single impression as published and that they were bound together soon after publication: this is not a collection assembled from separate prints by a collector. It is of the greatest importance for the history of French architecture during the seventeenth century.Extensive description on request.

Leiden - Caspar Merian, 1659
Prijs: Euro 975,-

[ATLAS - NETHERLANDS - ZEELAND]. GERSOM, Gerrit van.
Extraordinary manuscript atlas and register of land ownership for the "Gecombineerde Prins Willem Polder" (combined Prince William polder) in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (the parts of Flanders situated in the province of Zeeland in the Dutch Republic), north and west of the town of Oostburg, in the southwest corner of the Netherlands. It documents the individual plots of land within the polder and records the owners who acquired each plot when the polder was first laid out in 1650 and 1651, and the owners in 1723. Atlases of this type were drawn up by land-owning corporations or polder authorities for the proper administration of land taxes, and provide one of the most complete and accurate records of land ownership. They generally remained in the archives of the institutions until destroyed or turned over to the governmental archives, so that they rarely come on the market. The present atlas of the Generale Prins Willempolder in Zeeland is therefore an extremely rare primary source for the social, economic and topographic history of the region, the history of the Dutch battle against the sea and the genealogy of the land owners. It was compiled by Gerrit van Gersom, then dijkgraaf (the official charged with oversite of a polder and its dikes) for the Prins Willempolder. Most of the first map is detached and several have tears, creases or tattered edges, sometimes crudely repaired, but most remain in good or very good condition. The paperboard core of the front board is lost, leaving the limp sheepskin, and the binding is soiled and tattered, with some tears, chips and broken sewing s … [Click Below for Full Description]

[MANUSCRIPT - NAVIGATION]. PLEMP, Joan J. (Jan Jansz.?).
[2], 178 pp. not including paste-downs.A detailed, extensive and well-illustrated manuscript handbook of the art of navigation, probably prepared for publication but certainly never published, written by "Joan J. Plemp" whom we tentatively identify as Jan Jansz. Plemp (d. 1650), a Rotterdam official who oversaw the surveying of the city. The 178-page text, mostly in the form of questions and answers (like a catechism), is divided into 6 chapters. They provide detailed information and tables of data for making calendrical calculations; the use of the compass, including names and positions of important stars and calculating corrections for magnetic declination; tables of ephemerides giving the daily positions of the sun; determination of latitude and longitude by day and by night; calculating distances; solar declinations following Tycho Brahe; and much more. The colour illustrations include a splendid equinoctial compass sundial for keeping time at sea almost a century before Harrison's chronometer; and rectangular quadrants. The dials aid in calendrical calculations and determining latitude. The successful end of the Netherlands' Eighty-Years' War of independence from Habsburg Spain in 1648, meant that numerous sailors would be coming home from the war and many would seek work in the VOC, WIC and other commercial trading ships, which set a high value on navigational skills. Even though the Netherlands had one of the highest literacy rates in the world, the sailors who needed to or wished to learn navigation were not always well-educated, so practical guides assuming little k … [Click Below for Full Description]

Binding waiting without back and detached dishes Interior in very good condition 1 subtitle, 1 frontispiece, 1 title page, 7 ff. nc., 567 pp., 47 ff. nc. (Collation well complete). - Very rare work. Marco Vidal, member of the religious order of the Theatines, was a specialist in casuistry. In this work of moral theology which covers many cases of conscience, it deals in particular with the problem of the penitent disagreeing with his confessor about the seriousness of his mistakes or about the necessary reparations and penalties. For him, the confessor can and must give absolution, which gives the penitent the right to seek the confessor who is most favorable to him. This innovative position did not please the Church who put the book on the Index as early as 1654.

JANSSON, J.
Amsterdam: Jansson, J., 1650. unbound. Map. Hand colored engraving. Image measures 21" x 25."Mid-17th century, double page map of Egypt showing Cairo and the Nile river as it flows from the Mediterranean Sea. Oriented 90 degrees to the right, so that the Nile is horizontal, the notations for cities and population centers are more dense near Cairo and Jerusalem, and become more sparse the farther from the Mediterranean the Nile flows. Much of the Red Sea can be seen as well as part of Arabia. Wonderful depiction of the Pyramids is included in this well designed map. Jan Jansson was part of an influential family of map publishers from the Netherlands throughout the 17th century and beyond. They were based in Arnhem then in Amsterdam. They were printers, publishers and booksellers. Major publications were under the joint ownership of the Jansson heirs and their printing empire. This is a beautiful example of his work.
