[Weldon, Sir Anthony]
London: Printed by R.I. and are to be sold by John Wright at the King's-Head in the Old Baily, 1650. First edition. Frontispiece portrait of King James. [viii], 197 pp. 1 vols. Small 8vo. Scandals in the Court of King James: a "violently anti-Jacobean tract" This "violently anti-Jacobean tract" (ODNB) was attributed to politician and reputed satirist Sir Anthony Weldon (d. 1648) within a year of its publication. "Despite the somewhat perilous uncertainty of evidence for Weldon's role as a satirist, the publications with which he is commonly associated have enjoyed enormous popularity and influence on later historians. Sir Walter Scott's republication of The Court and Character in The Secret History of the Court of James I (1811) revived them, and modern historians have frequently had cause to lament the way in which 'Weldon' succeeded in distorting history. He may have been unfair, and his satire was certainly just one example drawn from a rich contemporary vein of courtly criticism, but his version of James VI and I as a perverted, hypocritical, slobbering villain remains compelling" (ODNB). A choice copy with the portrait frontispiece present. Wing W1272. Contemporary sheep. Corners finely repaired at an early date, red spine label. Fine.

Potter P.
. [Amsterdam], Nicolaes Visscher, ca.1650. Eight engravings (each measuring ca. 14 x 17 cm), numbered 1-8 in the lower right corner outside the printed frame. Contained in a recent marbled paper clamshell box with mounted paper label showing the title.l A complete suite of eight lively images of quite probably the same individual jaguar (Panthera onca), a species native to South and Central America. Potter's drawings of this species have often been misidentified as those of a leopard (Panthera pardus), see e.g. the British Museum Collection database. Indeed, the leopard seems a more likely candidate, being found in Africa and Eurasia, however, although the figured animal resembles the Persian or Caucasian subspecies in having widely spaced rosettes, the inclusion of spots within the rosettes clearly show that this is a New World animal. Moreover it is far more likely that Potter (1625-1654; a contemporary of Rembrandt and Vermeer, who died at the age of 28 from tuberculosis) saw a specimen imported from Brazil than one from the Iranian region, as the first Dutch West India Company (1621-1674) was busy exploring Brazil - trading with northwestern Asia at that time was minimal. Potter himself never visited Brazil. Piso and Marcgrave, in their Historia naturalis Brasiliae (Leiden, 1648), figured the same species, but far more sketchily, as if they had never seen it alive and nearby. Potter's images seem to be the first accurate renderings, after nature, of this impressive animal, showing its behaviour. Potter was a favourite of the Dutch prince Johan Maurits van Nassau (vide B … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shaykh Abbasi (17th century), style of.
Isfahan (Persia) or Deccan (India), 17th-18th century. Very refined drawing in pen and watercolour in various colours and heightened with gold, on paper; in center a kneeling Indian lady, seated against a cushion on a terrace, eating breakfast, behind her a tree, in the background a town; verso blank. 18,4 x 12,3 cm.*Drawing of great refinement. The style of the figure, and the face in particular, is similar to the work of Shaykh Abbasi (flourished in Isfahan between 1650-1684), a Persian Safavid court artist who possibly travelled to India and was employed at Golconda in the Deccan, south India, for many of his later works depict figures in Indian costume and settings. He had a very distinctive style, with delicate colouring and notable European elements, and he set a new style of painting which was to be followed throughout the eighteenth century. - A few tears very neatly repaired.[(2246)]
