The stories are a variety of anecdotes illustrating how the ancient Romans lived. While the majority of the stories are of Roman life, he does have some foreign stories at the end of some chapters. Most of these are of Greek life and most of those are about Greek philosophers or famous kings.Several of the stories relate to moral subjects that parallel those in the Old Testament and New Testament. SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA / Galizien (Galicien / Galicia):
Kupferstich v. J. Coromina n.

(12) ; (8) 396pp. (18), relié. - first edition, rare, illustrated with a frontispiece, a thumbnail of title, and a portrait in mind. Binding Flexible full vellum time. Smooth back with respect to the posterior pen (dimmed) /. Crashed tail cap. First leaves with low folded right corner.

No publisher/printer, 1650. The legendary feud between Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza and the Society of Jesus was acrimonious, lengthy, and rich in legal filings. The main point of contention between the opposing parties was the failure of the Society to submit to the authority of the bishops and archbishop of Mexico, and this had a subchapter concerning the Jesuits' refusal to tithe to the ecclesiastical authorities. The present filing by the Society via its lawyer is a reply to Father Palafox's Al excelentissimo señor Don Garcia de Avellaneda i Haro conde de Castrillo . . (see: Medina, BHA, 6946). => Sabin characterizes the Society's reply as "rabid." There are two editions of this work: The other has only 131 leaves and contains a typographical error on the title-page ("lirro" for "libro"). In this edition the "Apendiz al Memorial. Aduertencias a quien lo huuiere leido," pp. 242-78, is by Juan Antonio Jarque. The place of printing has long been a matter of conjecture because of the paucity of studies of typography and typographic norms in Mexico and Puebla in the 17th century. We admit to no scholarship on the topic of typefaces but do have extensive experience with the paper used in Mexico and Puebla in the 1650s and the watermark in this edition is that of paper widely used there. Provenance: Bookseller's label of the Libreria de San Martin in Madrid.

SKONNING, HANS HANSSØN.
Hans Hanssøn Skonning, Aarhus 1650. 4to. 332 blade (upagineret). Hver side med bred træskåret røskenramme. Samtidigt pergamentbind. [Click Below for Full Description]

LOUYS DE GRENADE de l'Orde de S. Dominique (trad. Père Simon Martin)
1650. relié. DeCollection.

Folio. (20),+ 318,+ (38) pp. Richly illustrated with wood cuts. The title within decorative wood cut frame. Stain in the beginning, some leafs with marginal tears, spotting, ink spots on p. 11, 33 and marginal notes in ink on p. 55, 153. Somewhat worn contemporary full vellum, spine with three raised bands and with handwritten title in ink. Front fly-leaf filled with ink notes by different hands. Dekesel A12. Cicognara 2726. Later edition of the Italian translation by Ottaviano Sada. The Spanish original was published in 1587 and Sada?s translation was first published in 1592. The wood cut title from 1592 is re-used in the present edition. Antonio Agustín (1517-86) was a Spanich scholar of Roman law and antiquities, active in Florence and Venice. He died as archbishop of Tarragona. Both as an editor of legal and other texts and as a collector of antiquities he had a sceptical approach to the problems of authenticity. This posthumously published work on numismatics was for a long time the most readable introduction to the coinage of classical antiquity, and covering not only Roman but also provincial local coinage. The wood cut illustrations depicts not only coins but also the triumphal archs of Rome.

SKONNING, HANS HANSSØN.
Hans Hanssøn Skonning, Aarhus 1650. 4to. 332 blade (upagineret). Hver side med bred træskåret røskenramme. Senere (c. 1870) halvlæderbind med rygforgyldning. Bogblokken meget velholdt. Navn (Johan Rohde) på fribladet.. Bibl. Dan. IV,246. Thesaurus 644. Danske Provinstryk 1482-1830 Ar 78. [Click Below for Full Description]

FIRST & ONLY EDITION An early and primitive map of China, Mongolia, Manchuria and Central Asia, and to the extreme west is Persia, Russia, the Caspian sea. * Based on Bleau's map of Tartaria and Northern China, with information compiled by the English and Dutch explorers as well as the reports of Marco Polo and also based on the ancient Greek Classics. * The decorative features of the map are also similar to Bleau's with the title is symbolically engraved onto the saddle blanket of a camel, representing the earliest trade on the Silk Road. * The Great Wall is clearly shown in the lower right corner, with that part above and West of the wall shown in three-quarters of the map. Outside the wall, the barbarian "Mongol Hoards" are depicted as devils with two horns, or winged birds which most likely symbolize a dragon form of beast. * There is a good bit of Latin text throughout the map, giving valuable insights to the land, inhabitants and other special features. * THE MAP: The map is uncolored as issued, and shows the upper left corner at 50 degrees west and eastward to 390 degrees east; from 60 degrees north down to 30 degrees south. There is printing discrepancy at the upper left showing 50,which is inconsistent with 90 at bottom left. The scale of the map is in German miles. * CONDITION: The map is solid, with a few old mends on the verso [back] edges, the rec … [Click Below for Full Description]
