Severinus
Padua: 1650. Very scarce first edition, in excellent state, richly illustrated with many fine engravings. Fresh & solid. Severinus , Marcus Aurelius - Vipera Pythia. Id est, De Viperae Natura , Veneno, Medicina, Demostrationes & Experimenta nova. Patavium Paulus Frambotti, 1650 - Contemporary full vellum binding, gilt coat of arms on front and backcover, tall 8vo , 23 x 17 cm : small woodengraving title page, copper-engraved allegorical page with 12 vignettes, 522pp, (22) pp, 16 page-large copper engravings, 3 half page-large copper-engravings, 2 small copper-engraved text-illustrations, index authors, index subjects - All engravings very strong and clear. First edition. Text in Latin. Very scarce; a copy of this edition last came to auction in 1988. A 1651 second issue is far more common. This is a fascinating work on snakes, dealing not only with their anatomy, venom, medicinal properties and the treatment of bites but also with the folklore surrounding serpents. The plates depict not only snake anatomy but also mythical representations of serpents. This reflects the intellectual approach of the author: "[his] works presented a blend of empirical scientific observations and spiritual beliefs and speculations. He believed, for example, that studying anatomy would allow one to understand not just the natural world, but also the divine will and workings of the world's creator. (His mysticism also caught the eye of the Inquisition, who brought him in for questioning, although he was eventually acquitted)" In excellent condition. Fine, clean and firm. ont> Not Stated : Not Stated, 1650. An early and uncommon Testina edition of the collected works of Niccolo Machiavelli, containing his most popular and influential works, including 'The Prince'. Illustrated with engravings. This is one of five 'Testina Editions' of Machiavelli's works, named because of the bust of Machiavelli engraved to the title page. The leading title page is dated 1650, however the four other title pages preceding each work is dated 1550. Both of these dates are incorrect, and the exact date of this editions publication is unknown. 'The British Library Short-title Catalogue of Italian Books Printed in Italy 1465-1600' suggests that this work was actually published 1610, 1620 or 1640. Machiavelli's works are very often misdated, as they were dated retroactively due to the papal ban on Machiavelli's works that begun in 1568. The Testina Editions are known to have false dates, and there are many variants which are difficult to identify, with numerous rearrangements of the text. It is suggested by Ebert that this edition was printed in Geneva. Collated, complete. The final blank is present, and the pagination matches the Jisc record held at the National Trust Libraries. Collated from Jisc and from online scans. Illustrations to pages 116 and 117 of 'Dell' Arte Della Guerra'. Register runs as )(4, A-Rr4, )(2, a-n4, o1, A4, e4, a-mm4, aaa-ttt4, aaaa-tttt4, uuuu3. Blank leaf bound between 'Il Principe' and 'Discorsi'. A collection of the works of Niccolo Machiavelli, divided into five parts. Part I contains 'Giolotto Libri delle Historie Fiorentine'. Part II … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bartolomeo Biscaino (Genova 1629 - Genova 1657)
1650. Acquaforte misure: mm 91 x 123 Pittore e incisore italiano. Bibliografia: T.I.B., 47/041.

DESCARTES, Rene.
Amsterdam, Elzevier, 1650. 12mo, pp. [xlviii], 272, [14, index]; a very good copy in contemporary vellum; contemporary acquisition inscription and manuscript notes (partly obscured) to the front and rear paste-downs by Florius Buolius, prefect of the Alpine Engadin valley.First duodecimo edition, published the year after the first edition, and in the same year as the author's death.Descartes' last work, this was written in Egmond-Binnen, his last Dutch residence, for Queen Christina of Sweden. It discusses psychology, ethics and the relationship between mind and body; Descartes believed that the soul was a definite entity giving rise to senses, thoughts, feelings, affections and acts of volition, and he was one of the first to regard the brain as an organ which integrated the function of mind and body. Such beliefs had a powerful influence on the thinking of men like Robert Hooke, Giovanni Borelli, Jan Swammerdam and Thomas Willis, and, at a time when scientific research was expanding rapidly, Descartes' theories helped to explain the more puzzling problems of human physiology (see Heirs of Hippocrates, no. 291).Rahir 1116; Willems 1104. WELDON, Anthony
London: R.I. and are to be sold by John Wright, 1650. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A fascinating 17th-century attack on King James I's character Anthony Weldon was a 17th-century English politician who is best known for his book 'The Court and Character of King James I'. This book has long been famous for one specific line, that King James was "the wisest fool in Christendom". Weldon had previously been banished from King James' court after publishing negative evaluations of the King's rulership. First published in 1650, this work itself was contentious with Jacobean apologists. Weldon notably presented King James as a "perverted, hypocritical, slobbering villain" of whom he was exceedingly critical. (ODNB). Lowndes furthers the descriptions of this book, providing more exposure to the negative responses garnered by Weldon: "a despicable issue of filth and obscenity, of falsehood and malignity.". France: 1650. THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A PIECE OF RELIGIOUS HISTORY! A TRUE MASSIVE MEDIEVAL RELIGIOUS RELIC, THIS IS A 21" CONTINENTAL CHURCH ANTIPHONARY WITH ROUGHLY 500 HANDRITTEN MANUSCRIPT LEAVES MANY WITH ILLUMINATED LINEWORK, INITIALS AND BEAUTIFUL ADDITIONS FROM THE MID 17TH- EARLY 18TH CENTURY! Elephant folio is complete with STRIKING aggressive leather binding with ormulu metal bosses along the edges and corners reminiscent of the styles and bosses of Johannes Fogel who bound in Erfurt, Germany around the time of the Gutenberg Bible! Likely French in origin, as the piece has pastedowns that are peeled a little bit, revealing old French leaves used when the binding was made, although possibly Swiss or Dutch in origin as well. Text in Latin on beautiful thick paper leaves, handpainted in red and black with gorgeous and intricately lined initials, some with framing, designs and enhanced illumination, as shown. 4 line musical notations with square Gregorian notes, many sections are seen throughout, starting with the Dominica Prima Adventus, and including the Commune Sanctorum as well as other sections. Seemingly complete, the manuscript book spans 500 pages, possibly lacking a page or two at the end. There are some strips of period paper added into the manuscript, also with updated prayers, as shown, in a handful of places throughout. No locales, inscriptions or any ID to the book. Some leaves a bit more browned than others, a few are loose with some edgewear, otherwise the block remains in great shape with bright, clean leaves and neat, almost … [Click Below for Full Description]

Afmetingen: 19,5 x 70,5 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

BLAEU, Willem Janszoon.
Amsterdam, c.1650, German text edition. Fine original colour. 410 x 460mm. The most famous map of Africa featuring nine town views along the top of the map and ten vignettes of native dress down the sides. The interior is filled with fictitious detail, elephants and lions, and the seas have a compass rose, flying fish, sea-monsters and nine ships. Needless to say, each ship is flying the Dutch flag. This plate had a long life: it was first published in 1617 with Blaew's original name transcribed as 'Guil: Janssonio'; a second state appeared in 1621, after William had added 'Blaeuw' (blue) to his name to differentiate his firm with that of Jan Jansson, and appeared in his first atlas in 1630; this third and most common state, with extra hachuring around the large sea-monster, was first issued c.1647 and was still being used when a fire ruined the business in 1672. BETZ: 57, state 3 of 3; TOOLEY p.29: 'the most decorative and popular of all the early maps of Africa'.
