[Click Below for Full Description]

Montebruni, Francesco.
Bologna, Giovanni Battista Ferroni, 1650. Large 4to. 2 parts in one volume. (8), XXXIX, (1), 307, (1) pp. (4), 309-633, (3) pp. With woodcut vignette to both title pages, several woodcut illustrations in the text, and printer's device on last leaf. Fine contemporary French éventail leather binding. Wants ties. Second, posthumous edition. Previously, Montebruni (1597-1644) had published his "Ephemerides" for the years 1640-45 and 1645-60. - Edges, corners and spine-ends rubbed and bumped; hinges beginning to split. Sumptuous giltstamped éventail-style binding: double borders of a narrow zig-zagging design and a wider rosette-and-flower-design within floral braces and double fillets enclose a large central compartment, the corners of which are occupied by round-headed pointillé fans emanating from tendril corner stamps. The same éventail stamps form an elaborate central rosette with tendril stamps at top and bottom ends. The empty space in between in filled in by intricate tendril and dentelle blindstamping. The various elements of the design are starkly set off by empty quarter-inch fillet borders enclosing the corner éventails with quadrants and the central rosette with a lozenge; the tendril infilling is structured by the same blank borders forming a cross, thus dividing the cover into four richly tooled, mirroring quarters. The spine is framed by the same zigzag and floral borders as the covers, enclosing a narrow bl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ulugh Beg (1394-1449), the "Great Prince", born as Muhammad Taragay, was raised at the court of his grandfather, Tamerlane. From 1409 onwards he ruled Mawara'annahr from Samarkand, where he had a three-story observatory built. One of the oldest inhabited cities in Central Asia, Samarkand prospered from its location on the trade route between China and the Mediterranean (Silk Road). - "An important result of the scientific work of Ulugh Beg and his school was the astronomical tables called the 'Zij'" (DSB). The present work offers the calendrical and chronological section of his tables. It was through the works of the Oxford mathematician and oriental scholar John Greaves (1602-52), formerly professor of astronomy, who edited the volume, that Newton became acquainted with the works of Ulugh Beg. The second part of the volume offers the first European edition and translation of any text by the important Arab historian Abu al-Fida (Abulfeda, 1273-1331), ruler of Hamah among the Mamluks: his geography of present-day Usbekistan. - Some browning and spotting throughout; old library stamp "chiesa lib … [Click Below for Full Description]

JANSSONIUS JOHANNES.
[Click Below for Full Description]

MITELLI, Agostino (1609-1660).
[Milan: Giovanni Battista Paganelli, after 1650]. Sheet size 267 x 195 mm. 24 unnumbered plates of etchings after Mitelli by an unknown engraver, including title etching, on stubs. Platemarks: 241/ 246 x 166/168 mm. Most printed in brown ink (bistre). Watermarks: six-pointed star (cf. Briquet 6033) or no watermark. [15] shaved. Modern marbled boards. Plates numbered 210-233 in early ink.*** A complete set of a rare and previously overlooked edition of a suite of 24 etchings reproducing Mitelli's first series of decorative "cartouches" or frames. Father of Giuseppe Maria Mitelli, Mitelli père was an influential practitioner of the illusionistic painting technique known as quadratura painting. Several suites of prints were published after his drawings of architectural design and ornament: "three sets of cartouches and the Freggi [dell'architettura, a suite of 24 etched friezes]. His first set of twenty-four etched cartouches appeared in Bologna in 1636 ... [the etchings] were probably influenced by Agostino Tassi's prominent cartouches in the Sala de' Corazieri in the Quirinal palace.... Although Mitelli has been credited with originating the asymmetrical cartouche ... and his cartouches may well have been a point of departure for Stefano della Bella's Capricci (1646), his influence remains to be studied" (Millard).
The early and rare sheet hardly trimmed over the margins, browned an at the right margin with a 2cm long hardly visable tear. Old laminated on laid paper.]

SEVERINUS, Marcus Aurelius.
Padua: Frambotti. 1650. Small 4to. Contemporary vellum binding, later red morocco gilt labels to spine, yapp edges; pp. [xii] + 522 + [xxii], including several engravings and engraved head- and tail-pieces, illustrated half title; circular scratch marks to sides, some loss to labels, discreet repairs to pp. 99-102 and 179-80 without loss, corner of pp. 217-8 repaired with loss affecting final word on p. 217/ occasional browning, generally very good. First edition. Text in Latin. Very scarce; a copy of this edition last came to auction in 1988. A 1651 second issue is far more common. This is a fascinating work on snakes, dealing not only with their anatomy, venom, medicinal properties and the treatment of bites but also with the folklore surrounding serpents. The plates depict not only snake anatomy but also mythical representations of serpents. This reflects the intellectual approach of the author: "[his] works presented a blend of empirical scientific observations and spiritual beliefs and speculations. He believed, for example, that studying anatomy would allow one to understand not just the natural world, but also the divine will and workings of the world’s creator. (His mysticism also caught the eye of the Inquisition, who brought him in for questioning, although he was eventually acquitted)" (Timothy D. Murray, Alexander C. Johnston, and Curtis Small, catalogue of University Delaware's Animal Vegetable Mineral exhibition, August - December 2014). Severinus (1580 - 1656) was an Italian surgeon who rose to become professor of anatomy in Naples, where he died of the pla … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Civil Right of Tythes: Wherein, Setting Aside the Higher Plea of Jus Divinum from the Equity of the Leviticall Law, Or That of Nature for Sacred Services, And the Certain Apportioning of Enough by the Undoubted Canon of the New Testament, The Labourers of the Lords Vineyard of the Church of England are Estated in Their Quota Pars of the Tenth or Tythe per Legem Terrae, by Civil Sanction or the Law of the Land: Which Being the Foundations of All Civill Right Here, Must Needs Render Their Spoliation Wrong, The Taking or Withholding as Injurious as of Any Other Mans Due. Humbly Represented to the Judicious and Pious Consideration of All Sober and Advised Christians, Who Fearing God and Hating Covetousness, Have Learned Christ so Far, As, To Give Every One His Own; And Would do no Wrong for Conscience Sake. The spine is framed by the same zigzag and floral borders as the covers, enclosing a narrow blank border and a finely tooled dente … [Click Below for Full Description]
