[JUNGENICKEL, ADREAS]
[1650]. Full Vellum. Very Good +. Orginal German manuscript [ca. 1650] for printed text of JUNGENICKEL ANDREAS und MARTIN STIER Schlüssel zur Mechanica, Das ist: Gründliche Beschreibung der Vier Haupt Instrumenten der Machination, als deß Hebels, Getriebs, Schrauben, Kloben..(1661). Folio. Modern vellum on boards. The German text written in ink in fine hand contains numerous drawings of mechanical devices or principles. The water marks on the laid paper are from around 1650. The text is a discussion between an engineer (Ingenier) and a mechanic (Mechanico) presented as numbered couplets. The engineer poses a question to the mechanic who replies. The reply is complemented with illustration(s). We coud not find any record of a manuscript for this work by Andrea Jugenickels which was published posthumously. Collation of this text against a digitized copy of the published work provided proof that this is a working copy of, if not, the uneditied original manuscript for the publication. The engraved frontispiece would have been added by the printer. This opinion is based on finding that there are several missing sections of text, but a number of sections that are not present in the published book. This a rare original 17th century manuscript[JUGENICKELS, ADREAS]. Machination Herren Andreas Jüngenickels Churf. Sacks. Battrimeister. Original German manuscript [ca.1650] with additions and deletions not found in printed text of JUNGENICKEL ANDREAS' und MARTIN STIER: Schlüssel zur Mechanica, Das ist: Gründliche Beschreibung der Vier Haupt Inst … [Click Below for Full Description]

EMBLEMES D'AMOUR DIVIN ET HUMAIN ENSEMBLE (Les)
P., Pierre Mariette (vers 1650). In 12, demi-vélin ancien, titre manuscrit, plats de papier marbré, tranches rouges. [Praz, 255; Landwehr, 272]."

[Descartes] R. des Cartes (1596 - 1650)
London: Printed for A.C. and to be sold by J. Martin, and J. Ridley, 1650. First English language edition. Bound in contemporary full calf with a partial paper spine label. This early binding is unrestored and is holding well, despite some cracking along the joints and wear at the corners. Pages are toned and there is a small stub affixed to leaf A10, with the title written on it in a contemporary hand. Twelvemo (pages measure 145 x 85 mm), collates complete: [xxx], 173, [1 blank]. Overall a pleasing copy of a very scarce book. Copies appear in the auction record in 1961, '78, '98 and 2006. All copies but the Macclesfield copy in later bindings and trimmed close. With the word "rare" often tossed about, this book truly deserves the designation. Descartes' final work before his death, originally published in French in 1649. The work is broken into three books: "the first treating of the passions in general, and occasionally of the whole nature of man. The second, of the number, and order of the passions, and the explication of the six primitive ones. The third, of particular passions." Descartes takes a scientific, physiological view of passions and finds that they are generally beneficial to man, although they can and must be kept under control. Where earlier works by Descartes deal with the methodology and theory of knowledge, "The Passions" focuses on how to be a good and moral person in the practical sense.
