CORONELLI, Vincenzo.
Dekker, Globes at Greenwich, pp. 312-316 ( GLB0124-125); Stevenson, Terrestrial and celestial globes, pp. 115-118. A pair of beautiful globes, in their first state, by the celebrated Venetian globe maker Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718), who worked extensively for the French and British markets. “His reputation in the field was established in 1681 with the production of the so-called ‘Marly globes' ... made for the French king, Louis XIV. Coronelli seems to have sensed that the nobility of Europe wanted grand globes. These, then, he would provide!” (Dekker, p. 112). One of them is the present pair of globes dedicated to William of Orange, Stadholder of The Netherlands and King of England as William III.“In geographical names the map records are very full, these being given either in Italian, Spanish, Latin, Dutch, English, or in the native language of the country in which they appear. ... Legends are exceedingly numerous, many of them recording incidents relating to certain expeditions or to certain discoveries, such as the expedition of Magellan; early expeditions along the west coast of North America, including reference to Cortes, Ulloa, Alarçon, Cabrillo, Guzman, Drake, expeditions to the East Indies, including that of Le Maire, Hoorn, Van Diemen, Chaumony, and others. Boundary lines of local regions, in both the Old and the New World are exceedingly numerous, which fact in itself gives a somewhat unique value to the map as of geographical and historical value. California appears as an island, and a great stretch of ocean appears between northwest North America and northe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bibliografia: Bartsch vol. 21, 4. Dimensioni 143x214. Etching, 1650 circa, without signature. Example in the very rare first state of two, before the signature was added. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmer to platemark in excellent condition. Maratti was pupil of Carlo Sacchi; he very soon became a milestone for the Roman art in the Baroque period, with a particular reference to sacred painting. His 14 engravings refer to the first period of his career, around 1650 and for sure before 1660, when he worked in Sacchi’s workshop. The examples on the first state were probably just proofs and, therefore, are to be considered very rare. Bibliografia: Bartsch vol. 21, 4. Dimensioni 143x214. Bartsch vol. 21, 4. Dimensioni 143x214. It was first published in Venice in 1570, in four sections called "books". It is abundantly illustrated with plans, sections, elevations and details of architectural elements. The first book deals with the "tool box" of the architect: choice of materials, way of building, proportion rules, architectural elements, way of arranging and assembling them. The second book presents several of Palladio's projects, the plans ( iconographia and orthographia ) and notes about the projects. The third book describes how to build public buildings, such as streets, bridges, squares. Blaeu, Willem.
Amsterdam: : , c1650. Large double page map (22" x 19 1/2"), some coloring, text title cartouche in the upper left corner, also includes a second less elaborate cartouche and a coat of arms. Unclear when coloring was done, some tape repairs at fold on verso, some discoloration in bottom margin from tape, left margin about 1/2 inch (this is normal for this map), but other margins are ample, text on verso, some minor soiling, staining and browning; otherwise very good. Willem Blaeu (1571-1638) was the founder of one of the great cartographic publishing dynasties, which produced some of the best maps of the period. This is very attractive early map showing part of Brabant in the Netherlands, and is centered on Brussels. The map also shows a large forest and key roads, and includes an attractive cartouche and coat of arms. Van De Gohm p. 104-106.

FULLER, Thomas.
London John Williams, 1650. First edition. Folio (33.2 x 22.1 cm). Erratic pagination as issued, but complete. Engraved frontispiece, title within double-ruled border with large woodcut crown above the imprint, text within ruled border with marginal column for side-notes, engraved plate of armorials by John Goddard, folding map of Palestine, 26 double-folding maps and plates, most signed by Thomas Cross, John Goddard, William Marshall, and Robert Vaughan. Contemporary polished calf, double-filleted in gilt, small floral cornerpieces, the spine in seven compartments with raised bands flanked by gilt rules, one lettering piece, edges stained red. A beautiful tall copy in a contemporary binding. Pisgah refers to Mount Pisgah, the mountain in the Bible from which Moses saw the Promised Land for the first time. Thomas Fuller (1607/8-1661) was a loyalist English clergyman, scholar, and writer known for his preaching and quick wit. A Pisgah Sight of Palestine was Fuller's historical and geographical description of the Promised Land, written while he was under forced exile during Oliver Cromwell's rule. The text details the Puritans' attack on Fuller's moderate religious views and tolerance of unorthodox groups. It contains a full-sized Holy Land map and double-page maps of the territory belonging to the 12 tribes. Fuller modeled his maps after Christian van Adrichom, a 16th-century Dutch priest and surveyor, adding aesthetic touches with illustrations and decorative marks, while the maps have the cartouches, embellishments and fancies, they appear to be a genuine attempt to obtain … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bellini 61; Bartsch 1
