- Antique Master Print, titled: 'Newer Haupt- und Kopff kram, das isst Kurzer bericht von allerhande seltzamen und wunderbarlichen kopffen so hin und wider gesunden und gesehen werden.' - View of the rebaking of human heads. Broadsheet illustrating a German saying: 'Viel Kopff / viel Sinn / sagt mann allzeit / Das gibt auch die Erfahrenheit.' A German variation on a popular Flemish sixteenth-century legend that held that a baker in the Flemish village of Eeklo had a curious speciality. Those dissatisfied with their facial appearance could visit the bakery, where their head would be chopped off. Once the problem with it had been identified, the head would be sprinkled with flour and glazed with egg yolk before being shovelled into the oven. While the patient waited for their head to bake, their bleeding would be staunched by a cabbage, which served as a makeshift pate. At the end of the process their head would emerge from the oven, and be restored to its original place. However, the head would always fail to bake through, leaving its owner with a deformity. The legend served as a cautionary tale to those who complained of their appearance. Engraving and bookprint. on hand laid paper. Watermark: Coat of arms with a head. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. SCOLARI, Stefano (C. 1598-1665) BLAEU, Willem Jansz (1571-1638)
Venice. Stefano Scolari [Ca. 1650] Six sheets joined, mounted on canvas. Canvas size 42 x 50 inches. Hand-colored. Italian edition, first published by Blaeu in 1646. With EXCEEDINGLY RARE HAND-COLORING. Nearly identical in arrangement, decoration, and content to the Blaeu state. Over the course of his career, Scolari published many copy engravings of decorative wall maps of both Italian and foreign origin during the mid-seventeenth century. ONLY THREE OTHER COPIES OF THIS MAP ARE KNOWN TO SCHILDER ("Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica") in Augsburg Uni Bibl, Harry Ranson Humanities Research Center of the Uni or Texas (formerly Kraus), and the Niewodnicszanski Collection. Willem Janszoon Blaeu was born at Alkmaar in 1571 and trained in astronomy and the sciences by Tycho Brahe, the celebrated Danish astronomer. In 1599, Blaeu began to make globes and instruments. However, it was not long before the business expanded to include publishing maps, topographical works and books of sea charts.
