PALLADIO André
Edme Martin, Paris, 1650. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Descartes, René
Amstelodami : Elzevirus, 1650, 12, (56), 242, (14) pp. vorgebunden: Lugd. First Latin Edition of Descartes' Important Work on the Workings of the Body and Soul Including Significant Contributions on Ethics and Psychology. The first Latin editions were published by Elzivier in 1650 in both 12mo and quarto formats - most likely simultaneously although the 12mo version is typically given priority. This Latin translation of the original French edition of Les passions de l'ame (1649) was done by Samuel and Henri des Marets. The Latin edition of Descartes' last work, Les passions de l'ame (1649), was written in Egmond-Binnen, his last Dutch residence, for Queen Christina of Sweden, and first published in the original French the previous year. It discusses psychology, ethics and the relationship between mind and body Descartes believed that the soul was a definite entity giving rise to senses, thoughts, feelings, affections and acts of volition and he was one of the first to regard the brain as an organ which integrated the function of mind and body. "Cartesian physiology and philosophy had a powerful influence on the thinking of such men as Robert Hooke, Giovanni Borelli, Jan Swammerdam, and Thomas Willis. Descartes' theories helped to explain in understandable mechanistic terms the more puzzling problems of human physiology during a time when scientific research was expanding rapidly. A wonderful copy of this rare book, small piece of paper glued on title providing the location of the book in a library -possibly that of the Marques del Saltillo-, coat of arms in the dedicatory illuminated in bright colors, possibly contemporary.- First edition of this rare work on the history of Medellin, a Roman city in the province of Extremadura "la única Historia de carácter general que, hasta el momento, existe sobre la localidad" (Haba Quiros), on the life and martyrdom of the Saints of Medellin, illustrated with a folding genealogical plate showing the Houses of Medellin and Villareal. Solano de Figueroa (1610 - 1684) was a theologist, writer, accomplished historian and Archpriest of Medellin (Badajoz), amongst his works on the region following the Reconquest -the process that saw the Spanish Kings take the Peninsula back from the Moors- are: "Historia y cantos de Medellín", and "Historia eclesiástica de la ciudad y obispado de Badajoz", counted amongst some of the most reliable and veridic accounts on the region, also worthy of mention is the literary style. Medellin was the birth place of Hernan Cortes, conqueror or Mexico, Bernaldez de Quiros (Governor of Venezuela), and of many other early adelantados -which explains in part the naming of several cities in the Americas after it. BOTANICAL MANUSCRIPT.
(Saxony ca. 1650). Folio (315 x 200mm). Contemporary vellum, upper cover with gilt lettered monograph H. H. and Date 1665. This is a very attractive and interesting early botanical album, displaying exotics, perennials and garden flowers in full bloom, when the majority of published works were still concentrating on herbs. The manuscript is numbered 1 to 117, one leaf 48 is not present and 111 is numbered twice, there is one extra watercolour on the verso of leaf 64.Seven leaves have representations of tulips (fol. 40-44, 86, 94), at least six others show American plants, including Ficus indica major and Yucca gloriosa, 8 leaves show beautiful carnations, 3 crocusses, plate 21 Corona Imperialis/ Käyserkron ( Fritillaria imperialis) is particularly attractive. The nomenclature of the plants is mostly in Latin and occasionally in German. Many of the plants depicted in the present florilegium also figure in the famous Hans Simon Holtzbecker florilegium for the major Barthold Moller of Hamburg, albeit in a very different way. Both florilegia were painted at the same period. A list of the plants depicted in this interesting manuscript can be sent on request. Occasional offsetting from some of the drawings onto the next page.The paper is watermarked 'Z' or 'Zittaw' (thus obviously Zittau) suggesting the origin of the manuscript in the region of Saxony. Ex libris Henrich Götting from Flensberg (1786-1863) on inside frontcover. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

CHAPPUZEAU, Samuel;
[Click Below for Full Description]

Alexander Giraffi | James Howell (Translator)
London: Printed for R. Lowndes, 1650. Early Printing. Full Leather. Fair binding. 24mo. A contemporary account of the revolutions of Naples, first organized by the fisherman Masaniello. Giraffi's tale damns the agitator as a tyrant and villain of the most perfidious sort; being a biased retelling written by an Italian nobleman with obvious conflicts of interest, this work remained the authoritative account for some time, as most readers and writers reveled in the fantastic tale. This being the first part of Lord Alessandro Giraffi's eventually two part history of Masaniello. One of three first printings, priority unknown, all published in 1650. Hand colored frontispiece of Masaniello, with shirt brightly colored in sky-blue gouache. Title in black and red. Collates complete against the ESTC. Hinges cracked, but binding holding. Wear to the leather binding, especially to the spine, and some worming to the boards. (ESTC R21699). Fair binding.

"Beautiful portrait of William III (1650-1702) on horse, with a gun in his hand, realized as a calligraphic exercise. Very peculiar and interesting impression. Lettered on the bottom, at center: ""C"". Small holes along the drawn lines were made in order to copy the composition on another sheet, possibly to do some calligraphic exercises. Notably, in 1709 Rostgaard published ""Lex regia : det er den souveraine konge-lov ..."" in Sweden. The edition opens with a beautiful portrait of king Frederik III on horseback the head of which was realized after the death mask of the regent, whereas the lower part was brought by as a unique calligraphic exercise."."Etching on paper, trimmed close to plate mark; total: 413 x 328 mm; some tears along the margins, smudges and dirt on the surface, since black chalk powder was scattered in order to make the copy. Some rust stains. The impression was for a long time folded, therefore creases are quite visible. Watermark ""Pro Patria"", with HT countermark. Rare. "

There are three main reasons for ascribing the authorship to Casanova: the first was the fame he enjoyed as the most important calligrapher of Madrid in the 1650s when the manuscript was produced as a luxurious present for the Archbishop of Toledo. The second, his closeness to the Jesuits of the Colegio Imperial of Madrid and in particular to Nieremberg who wrote the approbation of Casanova´s only known book, Primera parte del Arte de escrivir en todas formas y letras(Madrid, 1650). Some editions were confiscated because of the frank (for those times) discussion of virginity and its method of loss. Pineau was a Parisian physician and surgeon to the king. His work, an unusual treatise on the anatomical signs of virginity, also contains tracts on embryology, gynecology and cardiology. Bonacciuoli, a physician in Ferrara, first published this gynecological work, dedicated to Lucrezia Borgia, early in the sixteenth century. Platter was an anatomist, the earliest supporter of Vesalius north of the alps, and professor of medicine at Basel. In the present work Platter is chiefly concerned with two questions of developmental anatomy regarding the origin of the arteries, veins, and nerves from the brain and the relationship of the veins to the heart and liver. MILTON (John).
typis Du Gardianis, 1650. Petit in-12 vélin de l'époque. (10 ff)-244 pp. Edition originale. Lowndes, p.1567. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
