Blaeu, Willem.
c1650., Amsterdam: 1650 - Large double page map (22" x 19 1/2"), some coloring, text title cartouche in bottom right corner. Unclear when coloring was done, some expert repairs at fold on verso, ample margins, text on verso, some minor soiling and browning; otherwise very good. Nice impression. Willem Blaeu (1571-1638) was the founder of one of the great cartographic publishing dynasties, which produced some of the best maps of the period. This is rather attractive map showing what was part of Bavaria, and the Danube River in the bottom part of the map. The map basically features southwestern Germany. A colorful title cartouche with a coat of arms helps decorate the map. Van De Gohm p. 104-106.

BARTOLOMMEI SMEDUCCI, Girolamo.
Rome: nella stamperia di L. Grignani, 1650. Folio (304 x 214 mm). Contemporary vellum, flat spine lettered in ink and with double gilt fillets, sides with double gilt fillet frame with corner- and centrepieces, gilt edges. Early printed bookplate (Federighi) to front pastedown. Allegorical engraved frontispiece by Johann Frederich Greuter depicting Vespucci reaching the Americas, engraved portrait of the author, section headings within elaborate typographical border, woodcut initials and tailpieces, text in two columns. First edition of this "magnificent" (Gamba) celebration of the discovery of America, an allegorical epic in ottava rima, forty cantos each of a hundred stanzas, "a sort of Pilgrim's Progress in verse" (Rich). The work celebrates the heroic wanderings and adventures of Amerigo Vespucci, in avowed imitation of Homer's Odyssey. In his introduction the Florentine author explains that the Odyssey is the more "complex", according to Aristotle's definition, of the two Homeric archetypes. Significantly, in his own reports Vespucci had cited the wanderings of Ulysses as described by his fellow Florentine Dante as a key inspiration for his voyages of discovery. "As expansion into the New World escalated, the irony was not lost on Italians that while Italy had no national presence in the New World, it was an Italian [i.e. Dante] who had inspired those journeys and Italians such as Columbus, Vespucci, Caboto, and Verrazzano w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemp. black morocco (spine rebacked), covers blindstamped with giltstamped initials "S. B." and year "1666". Extremely rare: "unquestionably the most representative of all German song collections published in the 17th century" (Osthoff); also an important source for the study of German Baroque literature due to the poems of Simon Dach. Heinrich Albert (1604-51) was the cousin and student of Heinrich Schütz. "With Simon Dach, Albert formed the nucleus of the Königsberg poetic circle, which was of especial importance for the Baroque song" (Riemann). The poems of Dach, the "Prussian Opitz", were never published in a complete collection during his lifetime. - The legendary rarity of these "Arias" has been remarked upon even by E. L. Gerber in 1812: "In spite of the number of editions which Albert's works enjoyed, they have now become so rare that I have never seen a single note of his, although I have dedicated more than three decades of my life to the pursuit of musical products" (Neues historisch-biographisches Lexikon der Tonkünstler II, 48). - The richly illustrated engraved half-title, which actually belongs to part 8, has been bound first of all (lower edge trimmed and rebacked with old paper; final two letters of the word "Achter" erased, so as to form a common title to the entire collection: "Acht Theil … [Click Below for Full Description]
