Extensive description on request Interesting and important early collection of 11 very rare architectural print series (with a few additional prints from other series bound with them) giving in total 120 engraved and etched plates of churches, other buildings, portals, altars, mantelpieces, ceilings and wall panels, alcoves, pulpits, architectural decorations (including helmets, military insignia, decorated borders, friezes, masks), fountains and grottoes, mainly in Paris and surroundings. The prints are etched and engraved by the best and most famous artists in Paris in the 1650s and 1660s: Jean Le Pautre, Jean Marot ('Le grand Marot'), Pierre Cottart, Jean Boisseau, Antoine Pierretz and Francesco Fanelli. All but Boisseau's were published and printed by the two most famous printers of engravings and etchings: Pierre Mariette II and Jacques van Merle. None of the 11 series is demonstrably later than 1661, though some may be later in the 1660s. The fact that each print series at least generally shows a consistent paper stock and the fact that the endleaves show a watermark contemporary with the latest print series strongly suggests that each series comes from a single impression as published and that they were bound together soon after publication: this is not a collection assembled from separate prints by a collector. It is of the greatest importance for the history of French architecture during the seventeenth century.

In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with English County Maps, a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name Atlas Major, there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of most of the cities of the world (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Franco
Artist: Franco ca ; date: ca1650 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 13 x 20; - description: A city plan of Eger in 1596. After the Battle of Mohács (1526) a sorrowful period began in the history of Eger. During the dual kingship the town changed hands almost every year and the Turkish army came closer as well. This circumstance provided the reason for reinforcing the fortress. In the autumn of 1552, Captain István Dobó and his handful of soldiers were successful in defending the fortress and northern Hungary from the expanding Turkish Empire. While István Dobó and his soldiers managed to defend the fortress in 1552, in 1596 the captain at that time and the foreign mercenaries under his rule handed it over. This was the beginning of the 91-year-long Turkish rule in Eger. The minaret, which was built at the end of the 17th century, preserves the memory of this period. Among all the buildings of this type, the minaret of Eger is found in the northernmost point of the former Ottoman Empire. During the Turkish occupation Eger became the seat of a vilayet which is a Turkish domain including several sanjaks. Churches were converted into mosques, the castle rebuilt, and other structures erected, including public baths and minarets. The rule of the Turks in Central Hungary began to collapse after a failed Ottoman attempt to capture Vienna. The Vienna-based Habsburgs, who controlled the rest of Hungary, apart from Transylvania, steadily expelled the Turks from the country.

FREART, Roland, Sieur de Chambray (1606-76). -
Paris, Martin, 1650. In-folio (35,2 x 23,7 cm.). Comolli IV, pp.187-197. Berlin Kat. 2374. Fowler 127: "A beautifully printed and designed volume." Rare first edition of an important work. "The Parallèle is not simply a compilation of examples derived from earlier works - it is a statement of a new point of view. It is the first architectural treatise of the seventeenth century to propose a fresh look at earlier architectural treatises..." (Dora Wiebenson, Millard Architectural Collection, I, 76). With an engr. title, 3 head and 2 tail-pieces and 40 full page illustrations engr. by Charles … [Click Below for Full Description]
