Danielis Sennerti [Daniel Sennert]
Lugduni: Ioannis Anthonii Huguetan, 1650. In Latin. Including his Epitome scientiae naturalis ( first published in 1618), De Consensu & Dissensu Chymicorum cum Galenicis, De Origine Animarum in Brutis and his Hypomnemata physicae (first published in 1636) Sennert is notable for his contributions to the development of an early version of atomic theory. Specifically, he forms an intermediate bridge between the works of Geber and the more recognized Corpuscularianists such as Robert Boyle. Corpuscularianism differs from modern atomic theory in a number of significant ways, most noticeably a lack of a mathematical argument for its existence, something Sennert specifically rejected. Sennert is a intermediate step between corpsucular particle theory and Aristotelian forms. The same works that are often sited as demonstrating his early atomist views also emphasize the importance of substantial forms. Sennert's theories were based on an experiential and experimental evidence that he gathered both from eyewitness accounts and his own laboratory experience. One of Sennert's most notable experiments was a variation on the "reduction to the pristine state." Taking an alloy of gold and silver, the silver was dissolved from the alloy in aqua fortis. In the classic "reduction to the pristine state," the silver was then precipitated out of the aqua fortis by the addition of salt of tartar and then heated in a crucible to return it to its recognizable metallic form. Sennert's innovation on this experiment was the addition of pouring the silver-aqua fortis solution through a paper filter bef … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nicholas Caussin
London: William Bentley, 1650. A rare first complete edition of Caussin's work, a moral opus, that gives a Christianised account of what Caussin defines as four of the most prominent passions: Love, Desire, Anger and Envy. The aim of the book is to provide advice on how to effectively manage these emotions. Nicholas Caussin (1583 -1651) was a French Jesuit and Louis XIII's confessor between the months of March and December, 1637. After a falling out with Cardinal Richelieu, he was exiled to Quimper. There is controversy over the reason behind this dispute, but new research by Philippe Seller and Gerad Ferreyrolles have claimed it was due to his strong religious oppositions to hell's existence. In 1643, after the death of his banisher, he returned, and was asked to form an opinion of the Moral Theology of Jesuits. Collated incomplete, lacking a plate. In a quarter morocco binding. Externally worn with rubbing to extremities and spine. Previous owner's document attached to front free-endpapers. Internally, firmly bound with failed binding to first few pages. Pages generally bright with occasional marking. Ink marking to the title page. Some foxing throughout not affecting the text. Final three pages laid down. Overall Condition: Good Only. Prijs: Euro 1.450,-

Contains very scarce publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. Contains fold out plate and demonstrative vignettes as called for. The second English edition of the work. First published in Latin as Clavis Apocalyptica in 1627. The first English edition was published in 1643. Joseph Mede was an English biblical scholar. This work, his magnum opus, Clavis Apocalyptica (The Key of the Revelation) was a hugely influential work on the interpretation of the Book of Revelation. The work predicts the end of the world by 1716, by which time the Jewish population would be miraculously converted to Christianity in preparation for the second coming. The work drew heavily upon Eastern thought, more specifically understanding the Apocalypse through a book of ancient dream interpretation attributed to Achmer. Those who followed Mede's chronology include Isaac Newton and Thomas Goodwin. The English Edition was translated by Richard More. More was the MP for Bishop's Castle, and was a well-known puritan who wrote heavily on puritan themes. In 1643 More translated the first English edition of Clavis Apocalyptica. PALLADIO André
Edme Martin, Paris, 1650. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Descartes, René
Amstelodami : Elzevirus, 1650, 12°, (56), 242, (14) pp.; vorgebunden: Lugd. Batavorum : Hackius, 1648, 12°, (16), 232, (16, pp., Kupfertitel; gebunden im Pergamenteinband mit hs. Rückentitel; feines Expl. First Latin Edition of Descartes' Important Work on the Workings of the Body and Soul Including Significant Contributions on Ethics and Psychology. The first Latin editions were published by Elzivier in 1650 in both 12mo and quarto formats - most likely simultaneously although the 12mo version is typically given priority. This Latin translation of the original French edition of Les passions de l'ame (1649) was done by Samuel and Henri des Marets. The Latin edition of Descartes' last work, Les passions de l'ame (1649), was written in Egmond-Binnen, his last Dutch residence, for Queen Christina of Sweden, and first published in the original French the previous year. It discusses psychology, ethics and the relationship between mind and body; Descartes believed that the soul was a definite entity giving rise to senses, thoughts, feelings, affections and acts of volition and he was one of the first to regard the brain as an organ which integrated the function of mind and body. "Cartesian physiology and philosophy had a powerful influence on the thinking of such men as Robert Hooke, Giovanni Borelli, Jan Swammerdam, and Thomas Willis. Descartes' theories helped to explain in understandable mechanistic terms the more puzzling problems of human physiology during a time when scientific research was expanding rapidly. Solano de Figueroa Altamirano, Juan
First edition of this rare work on the history of Medellin, a Roman city in the province of Extremadura "la única Historia de carácter general que, hasta el momento, existe sobre la localidad" (Haba Quiros), on the life and martyrdom of the Saints of Medellin, illustrated with a folding genealogical plate showing the Houses of Medellin and Villareal. Solano de Figueroa (1610 - 1684) was a theologist, writer, accomplished historian and Archpriest of Medellin (Badajoz), amongst his works on the region following the Reconquest -the process that saw the Spanish Kings take the Peninsula back from the Moors- are: "Historia y cantos de Medellín", and "Historia eclesiástica de la ciudad y obispado de Badajoz", counted amongst some of the most reliable and veridic accounts on the region, also worthy of mention is the literary style. Medellin was the birth place of Hernan Cortes, conqueror or Mexico, Bernaldez de Quiros (Governor of Venezuela), and of many other early adelantados -which explains in part the naming of several cities in the Americas after it. "J. [Click Below for Full Description]

BOTANICAL MANUSCRIPT.
(Saxony ca. 1650). Folio (315 x 200mm). Contemporary vellum, upper cover with gilt lettered monograph H. H. and Date 1665. This is a very attractive and interesting early botanical album, displaying exotics, perennials and garden flowers in full bloom, when the majority of published works were still concentrating on herbs. The manuscript is numbered 1 to 117, one leaf 48 is not present and 111 is numbered twice, there is one extra watercolour on the verso of leaf 64.Seven leaves have representations of tulips (fol. 40-44, 86, 94), at least six others show American plants, including Ficus indica major and Yucca gloriosa, 8 leaves show beautiful carnations, 3 crocusses, plate 21 Corona Imperialis/ Käyserkron ( Fritillaria imperialis) is particularly attractive. The nomenclature of the plants is mostly in Latin and occasionally in German. Many of the plants depicted in the present florilegium also figure in the famous Hans Simon Holtzbecker florilegium for the major Barthold Moller of Hamburg, albeit in a very different way. Both florilegia were painted at the same period. A list of the plants depicted in this interesting manuscript can be sent on request. Occasional offsetting from some of the drawings onto the next page. The paper is watermarked 'Z' or 'Zittaw' (thus obviously Zittau) suggesting the origin of the manuscript in the region of Saxony. Ex libris Henrich Götting from Flensberg (1786-1863) on inside frontcover. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1650. Rare book by the Portuguese Augustinian Friar Fulgêncio Leitão (1586 - c.1658), writing under the pseudonym Molina Saavedra. First & only edition. Not in Sabin nor Borba de Moraes. This copy finely bound by Emilio Brugalla (1901-1987). The work is a harsh critic on the expansionist, political and colonial Iberian rule under the reign of Philipp III. The work details events related with exploration and colonial power in America including Brazil, Africa, and Asia by the Portuguese and Spanish. It vividly accounts for rebellions, governmental policies and negotiations, missionaries activities and forced conversions. The author exposes the administrative policies of Spain in the World including the East and West Indies. Several sections are related to Brazil and the Dutch presence in the region. Fulgêncio narrates horrifying events perpetuated by the Castilian soldiers towards the natives of America. He accounts the first encounters with the natives of Hispaniola. Narrates events related with Indian native rulers such as king of Magua (named Guarionex) and Hatuey (died 1512), the Taino Cacique chief, the group leader who first fought the Spaniards in Hispaniola. Part of the work is dedicated to the evangelization and missions in China, Ceylon, Japan, India, the southeast Asia and America. Saavedra also accounts for the worldwide political manipulations of the European ruling class, ministers and some clergy. He describes the rise of Protestantism, the wars in Catalonia, Spanish campaigns in the Low Countries, Dutch colonization and expansion in the West and the East. Joseph Mede; Richard More (trans.)
Printed at London by J. L. for Phil Stephens, 1650. Collated complete using copac, Historical Texts, catch words and page signatures. (ESTC R1085). Contains very scarce publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. Contains fold out plate and demonstrative vignettes as called for. The second English edition of the work. First published in Latin as Clavis Apocalyptica in 1627. The first English edition was published in 1643. The second edition is the first edition to contain the additional work 'A Conjecture Concerning Gog and Magog in the Revelation' who, according to the Book of Ezekiel, are the enemies of God's people. He died later that year. A fascinating and extremely scarce work. Rebound in brown crushed morocco. Externally very smart with s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alexander Giraffi | James Howell (Translator)
London: Printed for R. Lowndes, 1650. Early Printing. Full Leather. Fair binding. 24mo. A contemporary account of the revolutions of Naples, first organized by the fisherman Masaniello. Giraffi's tale damns the agitator as a tyrant and villain of the most perfidious sort; being a biased retelling written by an Italian nobleman with obvious conflicts of interest, this work remained the authoritative account for some time, as most readers and writers reveled in the fantastic tale. This being the first part of Lord Alessandro Giraffi's eventually two part history of Masaniello. One of three first printings, priority unknown, all published in 1650. Hand colored frontispiece of Masaniello, with shirt brightly colored in sky-blue gouache. Title in black and red. Collates complete against the ESTC. Hinges cracked, but binding holding. Wear to the leather binding, especially to the spine, and some worming to the boards. (ESTC R21699). Fair binding.
