Persian miniature, showing a kneeling Indian lady.

      - Isfahan (Persia) or Deccan (India), 17th-18th century. Very refined drawing in pen and watercolour in various colours and heightened with gold, on paper; in center a kneeling Indian lady, seated against a cushion on a terrace, eating breakfast, behind her a tree, in the background a town; verso blank. 18,4 x 12,3 cm.*Drawing of great refinement. The style of the figure, and the face in particular, is similar to the work of Shaykh Abbasi (flourished in Isfahan between 1650-1684), a Persian Safavid court artist who possibly travelled to India and was employed at Golconda in the Deccan, south India, for many of his later works depict figures in Indian costume and settings. He had a very distinctive style, with delicate colouring and notable European elements, and he set a new style of painting which was to be followed throughout the eighteenth century. - A few tears very neatly repaired.[(2246)]

Dissertatio in propositiones physicomathematicas de natura iridos R. P. Balthassaris Conradi .

Prague: G. Schyparz 1650 - FIRST EDITION, with an engraved plate, ff. [36], small 8vo,[bound with:] Anatomia demonstrationis habitae in promotione academica die 30 Maii Per R.P. Conradum . De angulo quo iris continetur. Same place, printer and date, with a folding engraved plate (loose), FIRST EDITION, ff. [20], 2 works in 1 vol. (plus another, incomplete: see below), 18th-century mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red lettering piece (‘Miscellaneous Tracts’), joints cracked, cords holding, Macclesfield copy with bookplate and blind stamp (on the title-page of the incomplete work bound first), good A pair of decidedly rare dissertations, extensions to, and defences of, Marci’s main work on optics Thaumantias: liber de arcu coelesti, 1648. Prior to Marci, the prevailing theory of colour assumed that light was modified by the action of a medium to produce color. Most theories were based upon the assumption that color was simply a modification of light varying between whiteness and blackness. Marci preceded Isaac Newton in his belief that Light is not changed into colors except by a certain refraction in a dense medium; and the divers species of colors are the products of refraction’ (Richard S. Westfall, "The Development of Newton's Theory of Color" ISIS, Vol. 53, No. 3 (Sept. 1962) pp. 339-358). Although he thought that different colours were caused by varying angles of incidence across the 1/2 degree apparent diameter of the sun, he stated that each color was condensed or disentangled from the others after refraction into homogeneous or elementary colors of red, green, blue and purple, and that no further change in color was obtained by additional refraction of elementary colours. The work bound first is the 1684 edition of John Browe’s The Carpenters Joynt-Rule, lacking the plates (5 copies only recorded in ESTC, not in the BL). (Wellcome IV p. 51, erroneously calling for ‘plates’ in the first work: the copies of these 2 titles in the Wellcome Library are bound together; no locations in the US in WorldCat)

PUBLISHED IN HIS LIFE TIME IN SEVERAL TREATISES, AND NOW IN ONE VOLUME, CORRECTED AND AMENDED

London: printed by E. G. for Richard Thrale, 1650. Second Edition. Half Leather. Good binding. [8], [1]-161, 164-270, [6], 3-[206], [4], 1-[44]. According to Wing’s collation, this copy appears to missing a few leaves including: 2 preliminary leaves; leaf B1 (page 1/2) of Book II; blank 2D4 following page [206] of Book II; page 44 concludes with a catchword, presumably there are as many as 8 pages lacking according to Wing, presumably an index. Rebound in early 19th century sheep with corners and marbled paper over boards; spine desiccated; separation beginning at the front hinge; textblock is sunken in the middle so that the central signatures are pushing out towards the fore-edge (images available); the textblock was tightly trimmed at the time of rebinding and there is occasional mild loss of text, usually just the shoulder notes suffer, but on a few occasions the text itself; still quite readable as any loss is minimal; text is toned throughout; names and early doodling on the verso of the title page; previous owner name on the front pastedown; endpapers show evidence of moisture exposure but there are no distinct tidelines in the textblock; while this copy has some challenges, it remains an extraordinarily scarce book; digital images can be made available upon request.         Danielis Sennerti Vratislaviensis, Doctoris et Professoris Medicinae in Academia Wittenbergensi:

nbsp;Lugduni - Ioannis Anthonii Huguetan 1650 - A very scarce copy of the collected works of German physician Daniel Sennert. In Latin. Including his Epitome scientiae naturalis ( first published in 1618), De Consensu & Dissensu Chymicorum cum Galenicis, De Origine Animarum in Brutis and his Hypomnemata physicae (first published in 1636)Sennert is notable for his contributions to the development of an early version of atomic theory. Specifically, he forms an intermediate bridge between the works of Geber and the more recognized Corpuscularianists such as Robert Boyle. Corpuscularianism differs from modern atomic theory in a number of significant ways, most noticeably a lack of a mathematical argument for its existence, something Sennert specifically rejected. Sennert is a intermediate step between corpsucular particle theory and Aristotelian forms. The same works that are often sited as demonstrating his early atomist views also emphasize the importance of substantial forms. Sennerts theories were based on an experiential and experimental evidence that he gathered both from eyewitness accounts and his own laboratory experience. One of Sennerts most notable experiments was a variation on the reduction to the pristine state. Taking an alloy of gold and silver, the silver was dissolved from the alloy in aqua fortis. In the classic reduction to the pristine state, the silver was then precipitated out of the aqua fortis by the addition of salt of tartar and then heated in a crucible to return it to its recognizable metallic form. Sennerts innovation on this experiment was the addition of pouring the silver-aqua fortis solution through a paper filter before precipitating the silver from the solution. This experiment was used as evidence that the silver remained in the mixture in the form of minuscule particles, rather than dissolving into its Aristotelian components. It appears to have inspired similar experiments on the part of Richard Boyle and others used to establish acceptance of Corpuscularianism. With decorative head-and-tailpieces, and vignette red-and-blacktitle pages. Frontispiece engraving of the author to volume I is missing. Complete in three volumes. Condition: Rebound in half-morocco (volume I) and cloth (volumes II and III). Externally, generally smart, though with some light rubbing and a few marks. Splitting to cloth on rear joint of volume III, and board is partially detached, with some tears to rear endpapers. Front hingeof volume II slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Some pages have been expertly repaired. Institutional ink stamps of Birmingham General Hospital Library to title pages and throughout text. Title page of volume III is missing. Some mould to the first few pages of volumeII. Pages have some tidemarks and some scattered spotting, with handling marks to the title pages, but are quite bright, given the age of the text. Overall: GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Leiden: Elsevir 1650 - FIRST EDITION, woodcut printer’s device on title, a little bit of marginal damp-staining towards the end and occasional light foxing, pp. [xii], 242 plus final blank leaf, 12mo, contemporary vellum, blue sprinkled edges, contemporary signature on title, D’Apply, very good A most attractive copy of the author’s first book, ‘a Helmontian exercise in the causes and cure of ‘the stone’ [which] drew attention to Charleton as a representative of the new iatrochemistry. This was then much in vogue with more radical thinkers, who saw Galenism in medicine as an ancient authority, which did more to bolster the authority of the church and the crown than to heal the ills of the people’ (ODNB). It is no doubt no more than a coincidence, but the Charleton family originally came from Apley in Shropshire. (Willems 674; Wellcome II 329)
