Vellum 21 cm (Ref: VD17 3:006469N; Schweiger 283; Dibdin: 'Barthius commentary is not only superior to every work which preceded it, but has never been surpassed by any similar production'; Moss 1,376/7: 'rare, and held in considerable estimation'; Brunet 2,88; Ebert 4756; Graesse 2,194; Ernesti, Bibl. Aubry, depicting the Roman emperor Theodosius the Great and his 'Magister Militum' Stilicho, who guards 2 little boys, Honorius and Arcadius. Title in red and black. Woodcut printer's mark on the title, motto: 'Superata tellus sidera domat'. Woodcut initials and headpieces) (Condition: Vellum soiled, and loosening from fore edge of both boards. Upper board slightly curved. Front endpapers worn. Old inscription and name on the front flyleaf. Name below the frontispiece. Name and small stamp on the title. Stain in the upper margin of frontispiece and title leaf) (Note: 1650 was a lucky year for the last important Roman poet Claudius Claudianus (ca. 400). In the same year as Barthius the Dutch scholar Nicolaas Heinsius published an edition of the works of Claudian. (Buchwald, Tusculum-Lexikon, 3rd ed. p. 171/2) As 'tribunus et notarius' he acted as court poet for the emperor Theodosius, his general Stilicho, and the emperor's sons Honorius and Arcadius. In 400 he was honoured with a bronze statue on the Forum Trajanum in Rome. His work was widely read in the Middle Ages. The humanists also placed him on the center stage. In the beginning of the 20th century philologist lost interest, but since the rise of interest in late antiquity in the sixties, he is again recognized as one of the great Roman poets. (NP., s.v. Claudianus). Caspar von Barth, or Barthius, 1587-1658, was a child prodigy. He read a lot during his lifetime, but seems to have known little. His specialty seems to have been hoarding material. In his youth, in 1612, he published his first edition of Claudian. He republished it, with many corrections and additions in 1650. The commentary is, says Schweiger, 'überladen'. The very weight of this book, almost 2 kilo's, proves that he is right. For some Barthius was a charlatan, for others a 'divinum ingenium'. Barthius 'war gelehrt, hatte viel gelesen und so auch in seinen Schriften ausgespeichert, aber Ordnung, Klarheit und Schärfe lässt sich vermissen', is the final judgment in ADB. (Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie 2, p. 101/2) This edition shows however enough glimpses of genius to deserve the praise most bibliographers assigned to him) (Provenance: On the front flyleaf the name of Lennart HÃ¥kanson, professor of Latin Literature at the Univ. of Uppsala, 1980-1987. § 2 other names seem to point to Denmark. Under the frontispiece in old ink: 'Axelii Julii Iv. F. Nobilis Dani Dno de Wolstorp etc. Anno 1657'. We found on the internet the following provenance, dated 1662, of one 'Axelius Julius Ivari Filius Dus de Wolstorp [?] hujus Libri possessor [?]', in an edition of 'De anulis antiquis' of 1654. This makes: 'Axelii Julii Ivari Filii Nobilis Dani Domino de Wolstorp'. The 'Domino' is awkward. § In faint ink in the right margin of the frontispiece and on the title: 'J. Mundelstrup'. We found the following title, a poem in Latin and Danish, on the internet of one J. Mundelstrup: 'a Augustiss. Friderico Qvarto, Daniæ ... regi, gloriosissimam pacem regnis Ao. 1720 vindicatam gratulabatur'. § A small round stamp on in left lower corner of the title: 'A.St.B.')         L'Annunciazione

Bibliografia: Bartsch vol. 21, 4. Dimensioni 143x214. Etching, 1650 circa, without signature. Example in the very rare first state of two, before the signature was added. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmer to platemark in excellent condition. Maratti was pupil of Carlo Sacchi; he very soon became a milestone for the Roman art in the Baroque period, with a particular reference to sacred painting. His 14 engravings refer to the first period of his career, around 1650 and for sure before 1660, when he worked in Sacchi's workshop. The examples on the first state were probably just proofs and, therefore, are to be considered very rare. Bibliografia: Bartsch vol. 21, 4. Dimensioni 143x214. Bartsch vol. 21, 4.

Royal folio (41 x 27.5 cm). With a hand-coloured title-page, a large folding map of the dikes along the border of the polder, a large folding general map of the polder showing the numbered parcels at a scale of about 1:18,000, and 17 folding detail maps showing the individual plots within the parcels at a larger scale, all executed in brown ink and watercolours and tipped onto the fore-edges of 19 of the 144 numbered text leaves. Contemporary sheepskin parchment.

Extraordinary manuscript atlas and register of land ownership for the "Gecombineerde Prins Willem Polder" (combined Prince William polder) in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (the parts of Flanders situated in the province of Zeeland in the Dutch Republic), north and west of the town of Oostburg, in the southwest corner of the Netherlands. It documents the individual plots of land within the polder and records the owners who acquired each plot when the polder was first laid out in 1650 and 1651, and the owners in 1723. Atlases of this type were drawn up by land-owning corporations or polder authorities for the proper administration of land taxes, and provide one of the most complete and accurate records of land ownership. They generally remained in the archives of the institutions until destroyed or turned over to the governmental archives, so that they rarely come on the market. The present atlas of the Generale Prins Willempolder in Zeeland is therefore an extremely rare primary source for the social, economic and topographic history of the region, the history of the Dutch battle against the sea and the genealogy of the land owners. It was compiled by Gerrit van Gersom, then dijkgraaf (the official charged with oversite of a polder and its dikes) for the Prins Willempolder. Most of the first map is detached and several have tears, creases or tattered edges, sometimes crudely repaired, but most remain in good or very good condition. The paperboard core of the front board is lost, leaving the limp sheepskin, and the binding is soiled and tattered, with some tears, chips and broken sewing supports. An essential primary source for the history, topography and genealogy of the Prins Willempolder in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, in the southwest corner of the Netherlands, near the coast and the Belgian border.

Frankfurt am Main, Matthias Merian, 1650-1653. Six parts in four. Folio (32.6 x 19.6 cm) with 249 engraved plates and six engraved title pages (four resembling frontispieces, engraved by Matthias Merian). Part I (no date, but 1650) 232 [iv] pp., 80 plates; Part III (AND) Part II (1653) 200, [vii]; 40, [iii] pp., 40 [28, 12] plates; Part V (no date, but 1650) (AND) part IV (1650) 228; 78; [xii] pp., 67 [47, 20] plates; Part VI (1650). 227, [vii] pp. 62 plates. Contemporary uniform full mottled calf. Spines with six raised bands, compartments with rich gilt floral patterns and two green morocco labels with gilt titles.= A nice set in the rare first edition of Jonston's famous "Historiae naturalis" depicting all then "known" animals including insects, snakes, "dragons", shells, birds, etc. This is the Frankfurt edition, which is much rarer than the second edition that was printed in Amsterdam (1657). With the fine plates of such animals as an elephant with its driver, famous different horses, a stranded sperm whale, but also the more dramatic "draco's" depicted after "aldro" (Aldrovandus) and the Hydra with seven heads. Most plates are quite accurate and the animals depicted are easily identifiable to the species level. Some, however, are rather vague; perhaps composites or entirely mythological. The "serpentibus" is bound after the "insectibus", the "exanvibus aqvaticis" after the "piscibus" (as usual). The part on snakes and dragons, and the one on molluscs, have a "regular" title page with a large vignette; all the others have a frontispiece-like title page, with the title as part of the engraving. Several plates bound out of sequence. A few pates with old paper repairs. The combined index to volumes IV and V much toned. Several text pages browned, the plates usually in much better condition. Rear endpapers of volumes II, IV, V, and VI with ink annotations in an old hand. A few plate figures, and several text page margins also with additional captions in an old hand. Provenance: "Prof Rey" handwritten on a few front pastedowns and title page margins. Very few complete copies of the first edition ever came to auction and the portrait is often lacking, as in this set. In all, a nicely bound, uniform set printed on rather thin paper (as usual) with age-toning, especially in the text and margins, and other minor defects being the result of over 350 years of use, but most engravings cleaner, with a strong impression and overall a good to very good set. Dean III, pp. 264-265; Nissen IVB, 482; Nissen ZBI, 2131-2135.

Ephemerides novissimae motuum coelestium. Pars prima: Ab anno 1641 ad annum 1650. Pars secunda: Ab anno 1651 ad annum 1660. Bologna, Giovanni Battista Ferroni, 1650.

1650. Large 4to. 2 parts in one volume. (8), XXXIX, (1), 307, (1) pp. (4), 309-633, (3) pp. With woodcut vignette to both title pages, several woodcut illustrations in the text, and printer's device on last leaf. Fine contemporary French éventail leather binding. Wants ties. Second, posthumous edition. Previously, Montebruni (1597-1644) had published his "Ephemerides" for the years 1640-45 and 1645-60. - Edges, corners and spine-ends rubbed and bumped; hinges beginning to split. Sumptuous giltstamped éventail-style binding: double borders of a narrow zig-zagging design and a wider rosette-and-flower-design within floral braces and double fillets enclose a large central compartment, the corners of which are occupied by round-headed pointillé fans emanating from tendril corner stamps. The same éventail stamps form an elaborate central rosette with tendril stamps at top and bottom ends. The empty space in between in filled in by intricate tendril and dentelle blindstamping. The various elements of the design are starkly set off by empty quarter-inch fillet borders enclosing the corner éventails with quadrants and the central rosette with a lozenge; the tendril infilling is structured by the same blank borders forming a cross, thus dividing the cover into four richly tooled, mirroring quarters. The spine is framed by the same zigzag and floral borders as the covers, enclosing a narrow blank border and a finely tooled dentelle and semi-rosette design echoing the cover infilling. - Title page bears 1772 ms. note of ownership by the Capuchin monk Giovanni da Cento, who introduced the volume to his monastery's library in Cento (Emilia-Romagna). Later in the library of the Swedish collector Thore Virgin (1886-1957) with his repeated signature (dated Stockholm, 16 May 1914) and his bookplate (dated 1911) and collection stamp ("Bibliotheca Qvarnforsiana"). Additional bookplate of Rolf Wistrand. Riccardi II, 180, 2. Houzeau/Lancaster 15161. OCLC 68956764. Lalande 211 ("1640").

Nova Et Accurata Totius Germaniae Tabula

Venice. Stefano Scolari [Ca. 1650] - Six sheets joined, mounted on canvas. Canvas size 42 x 50 inches. Hand-colored. Title at top border with "Willem Janss Blaeuw Men Vintse te coop tot Amsterdam op 't Water inde Sonnewyser" placed lower left (paper a bit browned, slight paper loss at edges). Italian edition, first published by Blaeu in 1646. With EXCEEDINGLY RARE HAND-COLORING. Nearly identical in arrangement, decoration, and content to the Blaeu state. Though the Italian copy does not include a reference to publisher or engraver, it likely originated from the Venetian publisher Stefano Scolari, who engraved this copy of "Nova Et Accurata Totius Germaniae Tabula" to use as a model for a complete new set of copperplates. Over the course of his career, Scolari published many copy engravings of decorative wall maps of both Italian and foreign origin during the mid-seventeenth century. ONLY THREE OTHER COPIES OF THIS MAP ARE KNOWN TO SCHILDER ("Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica") in Augsburg Uni Bibl, Harry Ranson Humanities Research Center of the Uni or Texas (formerly Kraus), and the Niewodnicszanski Collection. Willem Janszoon Blaeu was born at Alkmaar in 1571 and trained in astronomy and the sciences by Tycho Brahe, the celebrated Danish astronomer. In 1599, Blaeu began to make globes and instruments. However, it was not long before the business expanded to include publishing maps, topographical works and books of sea charts. His great skill was recognised by the Dutch East India Company and in 1630 he was appointed their official cartographer, giving him access to the most accurate geographical information available. During his prodigious career Willem Blaeu was to produce several atlases including the Atlantis Appendix of 1630. Five years later, the first two volumes of his planned world atlas, Atlas Novus or the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum were issued. In 1638, Willem Blaeu died and the work was continued by his very capable sons, Joan and Cornelis. Reference: Schilder, Gunter. Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica. Vol. V. Contemp. English calf with rebacked spine, preserving original giltstamped red spine label. Editio princeps of both works contained. Ulugh Beg (1394-1449), the "Great Prince", born as Muhammad Taragay, was raised at the court of his grandfather, Tamerlane. From 1409 onwards he ruled Mawara'annahr from Samarkand, where he had a three-story observatory built. "An important result of the scientific work of Ulugh Beg and his school was the astronomical tables called the 'Zij'" (DSB). The present work offers the calendrical and chronological section of his tables. It was through the works of the Oxford mathematician and oriental scholar John Greaves (1602-52), formerly professor of astronomy, who edited the volume, that Newton became acquainted with the works of Ulugh Beg. The second part of the volume offers the first European edition and translation of any text by the important Arab historian Abu al-Fida (Abulfeda, 1273-1331), ruler of Hamah among the Mamluks: his geography of present-day Usbekistan. - Some browning and spotting throughout; old library stamp "chiesa libera" to title and dedication.         Guestbook of the "Wiener Frauenverein" (Women's Society of Vienna) with more than 1650 autogr. entries by prominent artists of the time, among them Felix Salten, Raoul Auernheimer, Marie Herzfeld, and Hans Weigel. Vienna, 1926-1955.

1650. 4to. 56 ff. Contemp. calf with giltstamped cover illustration. This fine, exceptionally copious guestbook with more than 1650 entries documents three decades of society events hosted by the women's association founded by Minna Kautsky, Irma von Troll-Borostyáni, Maria Janitschek, Anna Forstenheim, and Ellen Key on April 1, 1885. One of its first board members was Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach. Among the prominent members and guests of the society, to which men could belong as "suppporting members" only, are writers such as Raoul Auernheimer, Mathilde Berger, Käthe Braun-Prager, Karola von Buschmann, Ida Maria Deschmann, Marie Franzos, Marie von Glaser, Thusnelda Henning, Marie Herzfeld, Else Kastner-Michalitschke, Emil Marriot, Karoline Murau, Ludwig Ranzenhofer, Felix Salten, Dora von Stockert-Meynert, Helene Tuschak-Lafite, Gisela Urban, Paula von Wasserburger, Hans Weigel, Marie Werner, Alfred von Winterstein, and Grete Wolf, as well as numerous artists, including Marie Arnsburg, Hugo Darnaut, Auguste Döll, Marie Egner, Jehuda Epstein, Camilla Göbl(-Wahl), Susanne Granitsch, Melanie Horsetzky von Hornthal, Claudia Layer, Richard Lux, Olga Prager, Lea Reinhart, Karl Schneider, Ludwig Karl Strauch, Bertha von Tarnoczy, and Paula Wildhack. Musicians such as Maria Brüning, Paula Herz-Leitgeb, Olga Hueber-Mansch, Wilhelm Kienzl, Artur Mikolasch, Elsa Weigl-Pazeller, and Louis Rée have signed their names, as have representatives of politics and finance (among them the jurists Leodegar Petrin and Gustav Lippert), actors (Babette Devrient-Reinhold), and the architect Alfred Keller. - The volume begins with a dedication by Dora von Stockert-Meynert (the society's president for many years after WWI) on occasion of the opening of the 1926 Christmas exhibition; later events include a "Tee-Abend am 8. Dezember 1926 in der Galerie Fromme", exhibitions at the Palais Ratibor (1928), in the Glaspalast (1937), and at the Staatsdruckerei (1952), finally closing with the celebration of the Society's 70th anniversary on April 1, 1955.          [RHIN] Rhenus fluviorum Europae celeberrimus cim Mosa Mosella.

        I cinque fiumi

Pair of etchings and drypoint, about 1650/60, signed on plate at the bottom right and left respectively. Only state. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with narrow margins, in excellent condition. The two prints documenting the ability of Rosa to recreate a fairytale Hellenistic, where mythological gods are represented in perfect harmony with the surrounding nature. Rotili believes that the works are dated around 1651/6, arguing that symbolize the rivers of the four continents, in analogy with the Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, 1648/51.         Eremo di Camaldoli

1650. Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1650. Molto rara. Dimensioni 510x375. Etching and engraving, circa 1650. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with margins, minimum oxidation upper right corner otherwise in excellent condition. The work represents the Hermitage of Camaldoli which is located near the homonymous town, in the province of Arezzo. It was founded by St. Romuald in the early eleventh century and is the parent company of the Benedictine Congregation of Camaldoli. The work is not in the repertoires that we consulted. Stylistically, it would appear on the mid - seventeenth century, however, a date abraded but still readable "1664" appears in the lower left. In 1663 Johannes Blaeu creates a view that includes in his Theatrum Italiae with whitespace instead of decorative scrolls at the bottom corners, which seems clearly to be derived from this work. Therefore likely that the plate is dated to the middle '600 and has had more runs. Very rare. Size 510x375.
