HALMA, François.
, . . Nijhoff & V. Hattem 126; STCN (5 copies); cf. Haitsma Mulier & V. d. Lem 202. First and only edition of a Dutch poem in praise of Chateau Agimont or Neercanne on the Dutch-Belgian border near Maastricht, and in praise of other attractions in the vicinity, with as an appendix a Dutch translation of a Latin speech in praise of poetry. The double-page plates show the chateau and estate itself with elaborate gardens (and a ship sailing in the artificial lake!), a view of the city of Maastricht, and the great stone-vaulted interior of the St. Pietersberg mine south of Maastricht. The chateau is built stepped on the side of a hill (unique in the Netherlands) and it and the mine remain popular tourist attractions (the chateau houses a gourmet restaurant). The chateau and probably the other illustrations were drawn by Guillaume de Bruyn (1649-1719) in Brussels and engraved by Karrewyn. On its publication in 1715, Halma's book received an enthusiastic 19-page report in Boekzaal der geleerde wereld, which gave particular attention to the typography. Two tears restored. Very good copy.

COMENIUS.
Amsterdam (Amstelodami), Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium, 1649. 8vo. 2 parts in 1: (XXIV),266,238 p. Calf 16 cm One of the most famous school-books of its day (Ref: Willems 1080; Rahir 703: 'Elle est fort rare'; Berghman 1091; Brunet 2, 181/82) (Details: Back with 4 raised bands. Boards with double fillet borders. Title in red and black. Woodcut printer's mark on the title, depicting the goddess Athena under an olive tree; she holds a banner with the motto: 'Ne extra oleas', to be understood as 'Stay within the bounds of wisdom'. Printed in 3 columns, Latin, Greek & French) (Condition: Binding scuffed. Front joint cracked, but strong. Corners bumped. Both pastedowns loose. Title slightly soiled) (Note: In 1631 the Moravian paedagogue Jan Amos Komenský, latinized as Comenius, 1592-1670, published the first edition of his 'Ianua linguarum reserata', or 'The gate of languages unlocked', a book which promised a new method of language acquisition. The book is a 'pansophic description of common objects of every kind, which is set forth in Latin and thus affords at the same time opportunity for learning the grammar of this language'. (H.C. Barnard, 'The little schools of Port-Royal', Cambridge 1913, p. 111) The work achieved an immediate and widespread success; it was reissued many times in many European cities and translated into at least 14 languages, and became one of the most famous school books of its day. The first Elzevier edition is of 1643, and without the Greek. In 1661 Elzevier published an edition in 5 languages, Latin, French, Italian, Spanish and German. Estienne, Henri; Théodore de Bèze; Jean de Serres, attributed authors.
Selon la copie imprimée à Paris. A scandalous life of Catherine de Medici, expanded from a pamphlet titled Sympathie de la vie de Catherine et de Jésabel, avec l'antipathie de leur mort and here followed by a section titled "Exhortation a la paix, aux François Catholiques." The pamphlet was first printed in 1574 and the extended version in the following year, with more than a few subsequent appearances in the 16th and 17th centuries. The present example is one of two editions printed in 1649; the other has only 138 pages (although the two contain similar content). Perhaps these 1649 editions were inspired by the overthrow of English King Charles I, and anxiety "around" monarchy? The title-page here is decorated with a small printer's device of a snail, perhaps making haste slowly, and the text features shouldernotes for ease of use. Evidence of Readership: A past reader has added a few paragraphs of commentary in French on the verso of the front endpaper as well as two marginal notes in pencil and one in ink. Provenance: 19th-century "Ex libris Lebers" in ink on verso of front free endpaper. Most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.

WIC].
Asher 253; Borba de Moraes, p. 297; Knuttel 6473; Sabin 23344; STCN (6 copies). First edition of an examination of the fake resolution of the burgomasters and council of Amsterdam on the question of the West India Company. The present pamphlet is a response to Copye vande resolutie van de heeren burgemeesters ende raden tot Amsterdam . (Asher 250-252), a splendid satire of the burgomasters and council members of the city of Amsterdam, presented, and by many contemporaries accepted, as an official resolution of the city government concerning the West India Company (WIC)'s troubles with the Portuguese in Brazil. The Portuguese had retaken Brazil and other possessions from the WIC and there was a great debate in the Netherlands as to whether the government should step in to support the WIC and if so how far they should go. Many investors would lose everything if the WIC permanently lost its trade in Brazil. The present fake resolution gives a statement from each of the burgomasters and councillors (under their real names). The present pamphlet accuses the anonymous perpetrators of the hoax of deliberately trying to turn the populace against the council. This may have merely served to advertise the original pamphlet as a satire, for it was reprinted soon after the original appeared. With a few specks and a minor water stain in the lower margin of a couple pages, otherwise in very good condition. Title-page lightly dust-soiled, else internally clean and crisp, a near fine copy. A mid seventeenth-century edition, with a preface by the Flemish theologian Petrus Bertius (1565-1629), of the best known work of sixth-century Roman philosopher Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius. Considered during the Renaissance as one of the most significant texts of classical philosophy (indeed sixteenth-century English editions featured translations by Walton, Chaucer and Colvile), Boethius' five books of De consolatione philsophiae comprise an imaginary dialogue between himself and a personification of philosophy in alternating prose and verse sections.
