CHARLES I, King of England (1600-1649) - [John GAUDEN
[London]: [printed by John Grismond for Richard Royston], 1648 [i.e. 1649]. 12mo (165 x 95 mm; 6½ x 3¾ inches). Engraved double-page portrait by William Marshall. Early 20th-century half calf, marbled boards, all edges gilt, by Zaehnsdorf. Light wear to extremities; a few occasional pale stains, lacks terminal blank, generally fresh. Item #402219 FIRST EDITION, third state, with correct pagination in quire G. Originally attributed to Charles I, the bibliographer Falconer Madan believes it was written by John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the king. Though the title-page reads 1648, it was published on 9 February 1649, ten days after the king was beheaded in the aftermath of the English Civil War. The famous allegorical frontispiece by William Marshall depicts Charles I as a Christian martyr. The work was so successful in its portrayal of the king that, at the Restoration, a special commemoration of the king on 30 January was added to the Book of Common Prayer. Charles I is the only saint formally canonized by the Church of England. ESTC R10559; Madan 1c; Wing E270. [Attributes: First Edition]

Luyken, Jan (1649-1712)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni MONTECALERIO (da Montecalerio) (1578 - 1654)

A rare Roman law book, 'Tractatus de Legibus' by a 17th-century Dutch jurist Simon van Groenewegen. Groenewegen practiced law in Holland, mainly in The Hague and in Delft, but in addition to his own legal writings, he published an anthology of legal opinions on Grotius's introduction to Dutch law. Grotius published his work without literature support; so, neither did Groenewegen in his books. His works came from practical legal experience, rather than research. In this book, 'Tractatus de Legibus,' Groenewegen points out differences and inconsistencies in Roman Law, many of which he supplements and corrects with his own judicial decisions. This extremely rare 1649 first edition was reprinted and profusely translated well into the 20th-century. In fact, these more modern editions include provisions of the Roman Law that are still applied in Holland and which are not. Groenewegen also deals with practicing law in and out of other European countries, and what jurisdiction carries from one location to another. To this day, this work has legal significance within Roman-Dutch law. This charming vellum-bound book includes small vellum tabs along the fore-edge as a quick-reference for each chapter. BLAEU, JOAN
17DE-EEUWSE STADSPLATTEGROND VAN LEIDEN "LUGDUNUM BATAVORUM vernacule Leyden". [Click Below for Full Description]

"I intended not onely to oblige My friends, but Mine enemies also" ― John Gauden, Eikon Basilike This book was printed with these two titles together in 1649. According to Hackney, it is an incredible rare edition, especially with "prayers" after the Eikon. Shortly after "Eikon Basilike" was first printed, it saw tremendous success and reprint runs were quickly produced. It helped inspire cults dedicated to Charles I as a martyr, which began lengthy traditions and memorials to him.

HOBBES, THOMAS
Amsterdam (Paris), l'Imprimerie de Iean Blaeu, 1649. Small 8vo. [4] (engraved frontispiece and title), [8], [26], 246, 144, [16] pp. A few minor red pencil-marks in the margin. Very good copy. 18th century half-morocco with raised bands, spine gilt decorated. Marbled boards and -edges, marbled endpapers. First edition of the 2 French translations of De Cive that appeared in 1649. The original Latin edition appeared in 1642 (Paris) followed by two revised Latin editions in 1647 (Amsterdam). Asher 253; Borba de Moraes, p. 297; Knuttel 6473; Sabin 23344; STCN (6 copies). First edition of an examination of the fake resolution of the burgomasters and council of Amsterdam on the question of the West India Company. The present pamphlet is a response to Copye vande resolutie van de heeren burgemeesters ende raden tot Amsterdam ... (Asher 250-252), a splendid satire of the burgomasters and council members of the city of Amsterdam, presented, and by many contemporaries accepted, as an official resolution of the city government concerning the West India Company (WIC)'s troubles with the Portuguese in Brazil. The Portuguese had retaken Brazil and other possessions from the WIC and there was a great debate in the Netherlands as to whether the government should step in to support the WIC and if so how far they should go. Many investors would lose everything if the WIC permanently lost its trade in Brazil. The present fake resolution gives a statement from each of the burgomasters and councillors (under their real names). The present pamphlet accuses the anonymous perpetrators of the hoax of deliberately trying to turn the populace against the council. This may have merely served to advertise the original pamphlet as a satire, for it was reprinted soon after the original appeared. With a few specks and a minor water stain in the lower margin of a couple pages, otherwise in very good condition.

Dormer Diego, Zaragoza, 1649. Quarto, (10), 418, (11), pp, frontispice engraved pictorial title, with full page engraved plate, bound in contemporary full vellum, title inked on spine, very attractive copy in good conditions, Maldonado, José. Quito (Ecuador), f. s. xvi - Madrid, 1652. Franciscan (OFM), writer of the history of the Amazonian missions, treaties of law and ascetic and mystical literature. In 1634 he was appointed commissioner and attorney general of the Holy Places. In October of the same year he was elevated to general commissioner of the Order for the kingdom of Peru, which included the provinces of Lima, Quito, Charcas, Cartagena, Chile, Tucumán and Caracas. He could not occupy this position because the Count Duke of Olivares retained him in Spain, and the King appointed him Commissioner General of the Indies, a position he held on January 16, 1641. That year, in order to exalt, in contrast to the Jesuits' relations, the paper that in the discovery of the Amazon had corresponded to the Franciscans from Quito, published, in Madrid, the relation of the discovery of the Amazon River, by another name of the Marañón, made by the religion of our Father San Francisco, through the religious of the Province of San Francisco de Quito, to report the Catholic Majesty of the King, our Lord, and his Royal Council of the Indies. The book, made on the basis of the news heard from his father, encomenderos and soldiers and his own wanderings by those rivers and jungles, is written with sobriety and rigor, in harmonious and rich prose. A Gentleman [Thomas Belke]
London: Printed for J. G. & G. B, 1649. 24mo. A closet drama written during the height of the English Civil War, and contemporary with the events in Naples. The real-to-life Masaniello was tutored by the cleric and academic Giulio Genoino, and would organize the beginning of the first Neapolitan revolt against the Spanish Hapsburg rule. Refusing the pension offered after his instatement as Captain-General and voicing his desire to soon quit the political sphere and return to life as a fisherman, Masaniello would famously and rapidly descend into madness before having his head liberated from his shoulders. The play takes the revolt and madness, and spins an altogether different plot revolving around familial poisonings, knifings, strangulation, and barefaced tyranny by ascendant revolutionaries. Indeed, the moral of the play could scarcely have been more heavy handed--until the epilogue, when Masaniello quite literally rises from the grave to deride the chorus, decry revolutionaries, and urge subjects to be loyal and shy away from rebellion and treason. Written in the same year as the execution of King Charles I and the abolishment of the Monarchy and House of Lords, such a didactic drama must undoubtedly be considered a product of the tumultuous period. Penned by a Thomas Belke, perhaps the same Thomas Belke who was a Rector in Kent, Fellow of Queens' College, and Prebendary of Canterbury. Full sheep, with primitive tooling in blind. Rebacked with Japanese tissue. Bookplate. Lacking pastedowns. Lacking folding frontispiece called for by ESTC. [8], 77, [3]. An uncommon work, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemp. armorial red morocco, finely gilt and signed by Jean-Édouard Niédrée. All edges gilt, gilt inner dentelle, leading edges gilt. Here, he develops his vision of a Europe comprised of fifteen roughly equal-sized European states, under the direction of a "Very Christian Council of Europe", and possessed of a common army. This famous "Grand Design", a utopian plan for a Christian republic, is often cited as one of the first grand schemes anticipating the European Union. This Rouen edition of 1649 was precisely copied after the very scarce editio princeps, printed between 1639 and 1640 by Jacques Bouquet at Château de Sully in fewer than 400 copies. The first two parts cover the years from 1570 to 1605. The editio princeps of part III and IV was published by Augustin Courbé in Paris in 1662. - Finely copy bound by Niédrée for the Baron François-Florentin-Achille de Seillière (1813-73). [Click Below for Full Description]

BLITH, Walter
8 p.l., 98, [6] pp. Small 4to, modern speckled calf (first 19 leaves with an ever-diminishing stain, printed marginalia shaved on a few pages), a.e.g. London: I. Wright, 1649. First edition (?). Blith's English Improver is one of the most important contemporary handbooks for agricultural improvement. Two editions were published in 1649, the one offered here and a larger one (168 pp., with "Improver" and "J. Wright" on the title). Hunt calls the present one the second, following the Rothamsted and Arnold Arboretum catalogues but I am fairly sure this is wrong. The work was republished, as The English Improver Improved, in 1652 and 1653. "The greatest of the mid-seventeenth-century writers, Walter Blith, aimed higher [than Fitzherbert or Tusser]. Little seems to be known about him, but he brought to a profound practical experience an analytical and receptive mind, and the result was an agrarian counsel, embodied in his English Improver of 1649 and expanded in the English Improver Improved of 1652, which in almost every essential set the pattern of good husbandry until the days of Tull, and in many aspects pointed the fundamental precepts which still underlie good farming. Like every man in the forefront of agricultural thought, he saw much of his advice neglected during his lifetime, but more than a century later his analysis of the theory of plough design was still the standard; and today authority is busily publicizing the practices of ley farming of which he was the great advocate three centuries ago."-Trow-Smith, English Husbandry.
First edition. First edition, of Descartes's important psychological treatise, one of his most influential works, and the last work published before his death in the following year. This copy made its way to England very soon after publication. "Les passions de l'ame, which drew heavily on the then-unpublished Traité de l'homme, contains the application of Descartes's mechanistic physiology to the relationship between mind and body. Descartes made an essential distinction between the soul as the divinely-endowed seat of consciousness, will and rational thought, and the body as a machine or automaton subject to the laws of physics, and only indirectly controlled by the soul through the nerves.
