Giovanni MONTECALERIO (da Montecalerio) (1578 - 1654)
CHARLES I, King of England (1600-1649); [John GAUDEN (1605-1662
[London]: [printed by John Grismond for Richard Royston], 1648 [i.e. 1649]. 12mo (165 x 95 mm; 6½ x 3¾ inches). Engraved double-page portrait by William Marshall. Early 20th-century half calf, marbled boards, all edges gilt, by Zaehnsdorf. Light wear to extremities; a few occasional pale stains, lacks terminal blank, generally fresh. Item #402219 FIRST EDITION, third state, with correct pagination in quire G. Originally attributed to Charles I, the bibliographer Falconer Madan believes it was written by John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the king. Though the title-page reads 1648, it was published on 9 February 1649, ten days after the king was beheaded in the aftermath of the English Civil War. The famous allegorical frontispiece by William Marshall depicts Charles I as a Christian martyr. The work was so successful in its portrayal of the king that, at the Restoration, a special commemoration of the king on 30 January was added to the Book of Common Prayer. Charles I is the only saint formally canonized by the Church of England. ESTC R10559; Madan 1c; Wing E270. [Attributes: First Edition]

Asher 253; Borba de Moraes, p. 297; JCB II, p. 383; Knuttel 6473; Sabin 23344; STCN (6 copies); Tiele 3525. First edition of an examination of the fake resolution of the burgomasters and council of Amsterdam on the question of the West India Company. The present pamphlet is a response to Copye vande resolutie van de heeren burgemeesters ende raden tot Amsterdam . (Asher 250-252), a splendid satire of the burgomasters and council members of the city of Amsterdam, presented, and by many contemporaries accepted, as an official resolution of the city government concerning the West India Company (WIC)'s troubles with the Portuguese in Brazil. The Portuguese had retaken Brazil and other possessions from the WIC and there was a great debate in the Netherlands as to whether the government should step in to support the WIC and if so how far they should go. Many investors would lose everything if the WIC permanently lost its trade in Brazil. The present fake resolution gives a statement from each of the burgomasters and councillors (under their real names). The present pamphlet accuses the anonymous perpetrators of the hoax of deliberately trying to turn the populace against the council. This may have merely served to advertise the original pamphlet as a satire, for it was reprinted soon after the original appeared. Removed library stamped on title-page. Slightly moulded in the head margin throughout (with loss of paper at the beginning and end) and the front wrapper detached; a fair copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

CHASSENEUZ, Barthelemy de
Genevae: Joannem de Tournes, 1649. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Barthélemy de Chasseneuz was an early 16th-century French jurist who, curiously, made his fame by defending a group of rats who were put on trial for destroying barley crops in Autun, France. And while the majority of Chasseneuz's works focus on law, in 1529 he wrote an encyclopedia describing basic knowledge - 'Catalogus Gloriae Mundi'. This book was a survey of every known topic with which Chasseneuz was familiar. However, the focus of the work was French heraldry and societal ranks in the 15th-century. This 1649 edition includes charming illustrations throughout including dozens of coats of arms and family crests.

Blaeu, Joan
[Click Below for Full Description]

DESCARTES, René.
Leyden: Jean Maire, 1649. First edition. First separate edition of Descartes's magnum opus (DSB), the invention of coordinate geometry and one of the key texts in the history of mathematics - this is an exceptional copy, uncut in the original interim boards. The Geometry was originally published in French as the third part of the Discours de la Méthode; the French text was not issued separately until 1664. Descartes' "application of modern algebraic arithmetic to ancient geometry created the analytical geometry which was the basis of the post-Euclidean development of that science" (PMM). It "rendered possible the later achievements of seventeenth-century mathematical physics" (M. B. Hall, Nature and nature's laws (1970), p. 91). "Inspired by a specific and novel view of the world, Descartes produced his Géométrie, a work as exceptional in its contents (analytic geometry) as in its form (symbolic notation), which slowly but surely upset the ancient conceptions of his contemporaries. In the other direction, this treatise is the first in history to be directly accessible to modern-day mathematicians. A cornerstone of our 'modern' mathematical era, the Géométrie thus paved the way for Newton and Leibniz" (Serfati, p. 1). "Divided into three books, it opens with the claim that 'Any problem in geometry can easily be reduced to such terms that a knowledge of the lengths of certain lines is sufficient for its construction.' In this spirit, Book I is concerned with 'Problems which can be constructed by the aid of circles and straight lines.' The highlight of Book I is the solution, … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Super Octavo, 179*281 mm). (ESTC R15909. Alibone 828).Herbert, Edward, first Baron Herbert of Cherbury and first Baron Herbert of Castle Island, diplomat and philosopher, who following the death of his wife in October 1634, began work on The Life and Raigne of King Henry the Eighth. In writing it he made use of materials in official archives and in the Cotton Library, which had been closed to the public since 1629. To help his researches, in which he was assisted by Thomas Master of New College, Oxford, Herbert was provided with apartments in Hampton Court Palace. In a petition in January 1635 he asked permission to move to Whitehall or St James's in order to be more conveniently placed to use the records in the former and the library in the latter. As a good historian he was prepared to contrast what was widely said to have happened with what is stated in the documents. While the work was completed in 1639, it was not published until 1649. Although it too failed to gain any significant mark of royal approval, it was long regarded as a standard, authoritative study of the reign. ODNB.

Remondini & Rizzi.
18th century & later. Full sized, unused sheets. Six of the papers are known or presumed to have been printed by the Remondini factory. Three are later printings by Rizzi from the original Remondini blocks and bear the Stampa Remondiniani PESP blindstamp. Most in very good condition. The stars of the group are a matched pair (each 16 x 13 inches): Remondini's view of Venice surround by a large bouquet on a blue diaper pattern background, along with its Rizzi recreation. There are 3 Remondini bookbinding papers (17 1/2 x 14 1/2). Two sheets of Remondini wall paper (21 1/2 x 17 1/2). These have some fraying and are in good condition. There are 2 more Rizzi PESP recreations of binding papers. Full, unused papers such as these are rare. The papers were printed on a hand press, using vegetable dyes (probably in paste, rather than ink) on wood blocks; sometimes with copper pins or strips mounted on them for tiny details. A different block was cut for each design and for each color. The papers were typically stored folded in half. When a paper has two identical images with a narrow space between, it was meant to be cut in half. Remondini, establishing his printshop in Bassano in 1649, was soon renowned for his wood block and copper prints and block-printed papers. He dominated the c18 market, employing a thousand persons, with 38 printing presses, a paper mill, die foundry, and a trade school of woodcarving. When the firm closed in 1861, about a thousand of the old blocks were rescued by a group of 4 enthusiasts: Pasoli, Esengrini, Suardi, and Ponti (hence the P E S P stamp). They … [Click Below for Full Description]
