Lugd: Elzevir, 1649. See pictures. Some shelf wear on bottom edges. All spines have some discoloring and occasional marks. Boards mostly clean. Volume 1 has a bumped top rear corner. Volume four has a thumb size indent on rear board, a little chipping at top of spine, a small chip in binding at fore-edge, and loss of leather at the upper corners. All four books share three bookplates and one stamp (see provenance notes). All have pencil notes on the endpapers, volume one more. London: Company of Stationers, 1649. Rare edition of the King James Bible printed with Geneva notes. Some browning and foxing throughout. Crisp, bright, clean pages. Binding secure but hinges cracked and weak. 1649 King James Bible with Geneva notes Printed by The Company of Stationers, London 1649 Quarto 9" x 7" x 1-1/2" Condition Report: Rare edition of the King James Bible printed with Geneva notes. Some browning and foxing throughout. Crisp, bright, clean pages. Binding secure but hinges cracked and weak. This was a rare combination of printing. Since the printing of the Geneva Bible in 1560, it was the translation of choice for 50 years until the King James Bible was printed in 1611, of which now the King James Bible superseded it and became the favored translation, However, because of the tension between the church of England and those under her who were being oppressed, the Geneva Bible was the Bible the pilgrims brought with them on the Mayflower in 1620. Then in 1649 the two English Bibles were merged into one printing containing the translation of the King James Bible, along with the Geneva notes of John Calvin and Theodore Beza and the notes of Franciscus Junius on Revelation. A RARE bible and one to be cherished indeed! [Attributes: First Edition]

A Gentleman
London: Printed for J. G. & G. B, 1649. Condition: Very Good binding. 24mo. A closet drama written during the height of the English Civil War, and contemporary with the events in Naples. The real-to-life Masaniello was tutored by the cleric and academic Giulio Genoino, and would organize the beginning of the first Neapolitan revolt against the Spanish Hapsburg rule. Refusing the pension offered after his instatement as Captain-General and voicing his desire to soon quit the political sphere and return to life as a fisherman, Masaniello would famously and rapidly descend into madness before having his head liberated from his shoulders. The play takes the revolt and madness, and spins an altogether different plot revolving around familial poisonings, knifings, strangulation, and barefaced tyranny by ascendant revolutionaries. Indeed, the moral of the play could scarcely have been more heavy handed--until the epilogue, when Masaniello quite literally rises from the grave to deride the chorus, decry revolutionaries, and urge subjects to be loyal and shy away from rebellion and treason. Written in the same year as the execution of King Charles I and the abolishment of the Monarchy and House of Lords, such a didactic drama must undoubtedly be considered a product of the tumultuous period. Penned by a Thomas Belke, perhaps the same Thomas Belke who was a Rector in Kent, Fellow of Queens' College, and Prebendary of Canterbury. Full sheep, with primitive tooling in blind. Rebacked with Japanese tissue. Bookplate. Lacking pastedowns. Lacking folding frontispiece called for by ESTC. [ … [Click Below for Full Description]

Moscow: Pechatny dvor, 1649. 342 leaves. 29x19 cm. 18th century boards with modern spine, the block is well preserved with occasional restoration of the margins and the soiling of the pages. A milestone work, one of the most important Russian books of pre-Peter the Great period. The Law Code that was in use for almost 200 years (till the 1830s). Although the book printing has started in Moscow in the 1550s, the majority of books produced were issued for the use of the church. The books of secular nature were printed less than a dozen prior to 1700. 'Ulozhenie' is probably the best-known of them. The law system before the publishing of this code was quite chaotic with more than 900 acts regulating the life of the country, often contradicting each other. Most of those acts were created to be applied to exact cases and situations and didn't have universal usage. It was very important to develop the basis of the rights that could be applied in Moscovia. Moreover the 'Salt Riot' of 1648 in Moscow proclaimed that the code of laws is badly needed. As a result of all that 'Zemsky sobor' [i.e. the assembly of the land] was called. The commission for the development of the new code was formed then, led by count Nikita Odoevsky. The project of 'Ulozhenie' was read in two chambers - one consisted of tsar Alexey and Boyars' council, the other consisted of the delegates from the different social classes. It's important to note that all the delegates of the Sobor have signed the scroll of the project, after which it was processed for printing. The result was the first Russian law system. … [Click Below for Full Description]

WESTON, Sir Richard
1649. 1 p.l., 35 pages, numbered in upper outer corners, and 17 blank leaves. Small 4to (200 x 150 mm.), modern cloth, upper cover stamped in gilt "Rothamsted Laboratory Lawes Trust." United Kingdom: 9 February 1649.A manuscript copy by Archdale Palmor, with variations from the first printed edition, of Weston's highly important work, which describes farming rotation for the first time in England. Our manuscript precedes the first printed edition by one year.Weston (1591-1652), canal builder and agriculturalist, while already having had considerable successful experience in farming in Surrey, made a series of observations on the agricultural methods of the Low Countries during his exile in Belgium in 1644-45, which changed English agriculture."Sir Richard's account of Flemish husbandry was written about 1645, and addressed to his sons from abroad. This was circulated in manuscript, and there is no evidence that it was printed before 1650, when an imperfect copy was published by Samuel Hartlib, with a dedication to the council of state. Hartlib did not at this time know who the author was. The account is the first English description of the use of a farming rotation including turnips and clover to obtain maximum output from heathlands formerly considered of little agricultural value. Although it is not known to what extent Sir Richard emulated on his own estates what he saw in Flanders, he described a farming system that was to become the cornerstone of the English 'agricultural revolution' a century later."-ODNB.The first edition appeared in 1650, published by Samue … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHARLES I, King of England (1600-1649); [John GAUDEN (1605-1662)]
[London]: [printed by John Grismond for Richard Royston], 1648 [i.e. 1649]. 12mo (165 x 95 mm; 6½ x 3¾ inches). Engraved double-page portrait by William Marshall. Early 20th-century half calf, marbled boards, all edges gilt, by Zaehnsdorf. Light wear to extremities; a few occasional pale stains, lacks terminal blank, generally fresh. Item #402219 FIRST EDITION, third state, with correct pagination in quire G. Originally attributed to Charles I, the bibliographer Falconer Madan believes it was written by John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the king. Though the title-page reads 1648, it was published on 9 February 1649, ten days after the king was beheaded in the aftermath of the English Civil War. The famous allegorical frontispiece by William Marshall depicts Charles I as a Christian martyr. The work was so successful in its portrayal of the king that, at the Restoration, a special commemoration of the king on 30 January was added to the Book of Common Prayer. Charles I is the only saint formally canonized by the Church of England. ESTC R10559; Madan 1c; Wing E270. [Attributes: First Edition]

UNKNOWN DUTCH MASTER FROM THE 17TH CENTURY
"View on the ruins of the ""Huis ter Kleef"", a castle near Haarlem. Shepherds with dogs in front of the ruins. Birds flying in the sky, above the ruins. Dated and signed below, 1649 Maas (or Maes). The date seems original, but the signature doesn't. In a sale catalog from 2010 (lot. 587) it is considered as a drawing by a young Nicholaes Maes (1634-1693), who in 1650s was beginning with his apprenticeship at Rembrandt's. On the bottom right corner, are traces of what seems to be a collector's mark, stamped in black ink, fashioned as a ramping animal (a lion?) in profile, turned towards the left. [not in Lugt]. See R. van 't Zelfde, 'Josua Breckerveld (1644-1700)', Delineavit et Sculpsit 23 (juli 2001), p. 11-17, illustrated."."Drawing on paper, in pen with brown ink, washed in grey with some highlights in white. Total: 270 x 404 mm. Pasted down on cardboard, an operation that is contributing to the spreading of foxing, especially on the top region. The drawing was probably divided into two pieces (from a notebook?) and recomposed by pasting it down on a wide cardboard. On the back another date was added in pen and brown ink ""1885."" and might refer to the pasting down (the kind of cardboard would be consistent with that period). Other more recent numbers on the backing in pencil. Possibly, the drawing was pasted down due to a minor defect of the paper, located on the shirt of the sitting shepherd. The hole has been repaired from the backing and the lacuna was filled in with pencil. This area extends for less than 5 mm. "

Octavo, (195 by 160mm), title, [36]p., 17 engraved plates, tipped in throughout the work, original red marbled paper covers. A rare and only edition of David Seitz's work on sundials. Little is known about the author; presumably a talented amateur. The work itself gives a detailed guide to the theory and practical applications on sundials, with the work being illustrated by 17 engraved plates. Nuremberg had been a major centre for the production of sundials from the early 1500s, and Seitz's work reflects 150 years of accumulated knowledge. Zinner Instrumente, 534 cites only 2 plates; Arnold, Augsburger Drucke 117 [without plate P]; VD17 12:163930L.

Seneca
See pictures. Some shelf wear on bottom edges. All spines have some discoloring and occasional marks. Boards mostly clean. Volume 1 has a bumped top rear corner. Volume four has a thumb size indent on rear board, a little chipping at top of spine, a small chip in binding at fore-edge, and loss of leather at the upper corners. All four books share three bookplates and one stamp (see provenance notes). All have pencil notes on the endpapers, volume one more. Volume one has toning to introductory pages, and the last two pages, the rest of the text block being clean and free of any annotations. Pages towards the end of volume two have the slightest toning. Volume three is more toned throughout. Volume four also is very lightly toned. I notice a very occasional small spot as well. Beautiful, tall, soft Elzevir printings of Seneca's works, likely bound by the venerable Roger Payne. Note on Vol. 1 endpage, "Payne Binding", insinuating the bindings were executed by Payne, considered one of the finest binders of the 18th century. Also, the 1885 Sotheby catalogue lists, "SENECAE OPERA OMNIA cum Notis J. F. Gronovii, 4 vol. very fine and large copy (5 1/4 inches) in red morocco, gilt edges, by Roger Payne, rare Lugd. Bat. Elzevir, 1649." Our books are 5.25" tall, making it highly likely these are the same books. Provenance There exists a clear record of 4 volumes, attributed to Roger Payne, bound in red Morocco, of the 1649 Elzevir Seneca being sold since 1841 (with all of the catalogs listed below scanned and free-to-view on Google Books).

BLAEU, Joan.
Joan Blaeu Amsterdam, 1649. Double-page, engraved, hand-coloured map, Latin text on verso. Detailed and beautifully coloured plan of the town Bolswaert from Joan Blaeu's town book of the Netherlands, first published one year after the peace of Munster and the Spanish acknowledgement of the Dutch Republic. Blaeu planned his town book towards the end of the battle with Spain to consist of two volumes; one showing the towns of the Republic, the other showing towns belonging to Spain. In the second edition, due to a large scale re-conquest of land by the Republic, Blaeu had to transfer several towns to the volume showing towns of the Republic and as a consequence this volume became larger than the other; thus the composition of the atlas became linked to the struggle for independence of the Republic. With dedication to the city council of Bolswaert. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici B1 64.

LUYKEN, Jan (and Caspar).
, . . Attractive set of 11 works of the famous Dutch poet, artist and engraver Jan Luyken (1649-1712). Luyken, like Saint Augustine, had led a rather frivolous life when young, which he said helped him to vividly depict the dangers and temptations of a worldly life. Most of the works included are emblem books, with engravings accompanied by a Dutch motto, a poem, and several relevant Biblical passages for further contemplation. The set contains:1). Beschouwing der wereld... Amsterdam, 1708.2). De zedelyke en stichtelyke gezangen... Amsterdam, 1709.3). De onwaardige wereld... Amsterdam, 1710.4).

[Click Below for Full Description]
