I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 1649 Memoires of Philippe Commines King Louis XI France Charles VIII Political HUGE FOLIO / comp@$5,600 / Godefroy Rare edition Philippe de Commines (1447 - 1511) was a writer and diplomat in the courts of Burgundy and France. He has been called "the first truly modern writer" (Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve) and "the first critical and philosophical historian since classical times" (Oxford Companion to English Literature). Neither a chronicler nor a historian in the usual sense of the word, his analyses of the contemporary political scene are what made him virtually unique in his own time. Denis Godefroy (1549 - 1622) was a French jurist, a member of the noted Godefroy family. This lovely work on French history is the personal memoirs of Philippe de Commines. 1649. [WIC].
First edition of an examination of the fake resolution of the burgomasters and council of Amsterdam on the question of the West India Company. The present pamphlet is a response to Copye vande resolutie van de heeren burgemeesters ende raden tot Amsterdam ... (Asher 250-252), a splendid satire of the burgomasters and council members of the city of Amsterdam, presented, and by many contemporaries accepted, as an official resolution of the city government concerning the West India Company (WIC)'s troubles with the Portuguese in Brazil. The Portuguese had retaken Brazil and other possessions from the WIC and there was a great debate in the Netherlands as to whether the government should step in to support the WIC and if so how far they should go. Many investors would lose everything if the WIC permanently lost its trade in Brazil. The present fake resolution gives a statement from each of the burgomasters and councillors (under their real names). The present pamphlet accuses the anonymous perpetrators of the hoax of deliberately trying to turn the populace against the council. This may have merely served to advertise the original pamphlet as a satire, for it was reprinted soon after the original appeared. Removed library stamped on title-page. Slightly moulded in the head margin throughout (with loss of paper at the beginning and end) and the front wrapper detached; a fair copy. Asher 253; Borba de Moraes, p. 297; JCB II, p. 383; Knuttel 6473; Sabin 23344; STCN (6 copies); Tiele 3525.

LUYKEN, Jan (and Caspar).
Attractive set of 11 works of the famous Dutch poet, artist and engraver Jan Luyken (1649-1712). Beschouwing der wereld... Amsterdam, 1708.2). De zedelyke en stichtelyke gezangen... Amsterdam, 1709.3). De onwaardige wereld... Amsterdam, 1710.4). Religious Tract Society, London. Beautiful and skillfully executed fore-edge painting of The Canterbury Cathedral from St. Stephens Road with a small of sheep grazing in the foreground. Octavo, full pebbled brown morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, front and rear panels, gilt inlay, inner dentelles, all edges gilt. In near fine condition with light rubbing, bookplate. The earliest fore-edge paintings date possibly as far back as the 10th century; these earliest paintings were symbolic designs. Early English fore-edge paintings, believed to date to the 14th century, presented heraldic designs in gold and other colors. The first known example of a disappearing fore-edge painting (where the painting is not visible when the book is closed) dates from 1649. The earliest signed and dated fore-edge painting dates to 1653: a family coat of arms painted on a 1651 Bible. Around 1750, the subject matter of fore-edge paintings changed from simply decorative or heraldic designs to landscapes, portraits and religious scenes, usually painted in full color. Modern fore-edge painted scenes have a lot more variation as they can depict numerous subjects not found on earlier specimens. These include scenes that are erotic, or they might involve scenes from novels (like Jules Verne, Sherlock Holmes or Dickens, etc.). In many cases, the chosen scene will depict a subject related to the book, but in other cases it did not. In one instance, the same New Brunswick landscape was applied to both a Bible and to a collection of poetry and plays. The choice of scenes is made by either the ar … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leeuwarden - Joan Blaeu, 1649
Prijs: Euro 650,-

The Hague - Joan Blaeu, 1649
1649. 17e EEUWSE PLATTEGROND VAN DEN HAAG 'Hage Comitis, Vulgo 's Graven-Hage', (later) met de hand gekleurde kopergravure. Uitgegeven te Amsterdam door Joan Blaeu in 1649. Afm. (prent) 38,5 x 50,5 cm. Prijs: '1.850,- (incl. lijst)

[BIDLOO, Govert and Romeyn de HOOGHE].
[12, incl. frontispiece], 127, [1 blank] pp.First edition of a beautifully illustrated commemoration of the triumphal entry of William III into the Hague, it was "the costliest and most elaborate public display ever held on Dutch soil" (Nierop) and the first time of a triumphal entry since the rebellion against Spain. The two directors of the festivities were Govert Bidloo (1649-1713), personal physician to William, and Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), one of the greatest artists to come out of the late Dutch Golden Age. The project served as De Hooghe's rehabilitation after he fell from grace the year before, when he got caught in a feud between William III and the city of Amsterdam. The Orangist leadership now thought that De Hooghe had suffered unjustly for their cause. He not only participated in the planning and design, but also made the splendid plates for the present commemorative volume. A slightly altered French edition followed a year later. From 1672 onwards, William governed as Stadtholder Willem III of Orange over most provinces of the Dutch Republic. In addition, from 1689 onward, he reigned as King William III over England and Ireland, and as King William II over Scotland. After dealing with the last remnants of the rebellion in Ireland, William finally found time to return to Holland in 1691.Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities, but otherwise in very good condition.l Berlin Kat. 2925; Landwehr, Splendid ceremonies 146; Muller, Historieplaten 2827; Nierop, The life of Romeyn de Hooghe (2018), pp. 364-372.

HALMA, François.
Nijhoff & V. Hattem 126; STCN (5 copies); cf. Haitsma Mulier & V. d. Lem 202. First and only edition of a Dutch poem in praise of Chateau Agimont or Neercanne on the Dutch-Belgian border near Maastricht, and in praise of other attractions in the vicinity, with as an appendix a Dutch translation of a Latin speech in praise of poetry. The double-page plates show the chateau and estate itself with elaborate gardens (and a ship sailing in the artificial lake!), a view of the city of Maastricht, and the great stone-vaulted interior of the St. Pietersberg mine south of Maastricht. The chateau is built stepped on the side of a hill (unique in the Netherlands) and it and the mine remain popular tourist attractions (the chateau houses a gourmet restaurant). The chateau and probably the other illustrations were drawn by Guillaume de Bruyn (1649-1719) in Brussels and engraved by Karrewyn. On its publication in 1715, Halma's book received an enthusiastic 19-page report in Boekzaal der geleerde wereld, which gave particular attention to the typography. Two tears restored. Very good copy.

Breda - Joan Blaeu, 1649
[Click Below for Full Description]
